Counter-Strike: German Government Cancels LAN

By: Brett Sheffield - Published July 03, 2009 at 4:05 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Following a ban on "killer" games, the German government is forbidding counter-strike to be played at public LAN events.
GotFrag.com - School shootings have been something that has haunted many schools in the US. From the original Columbine to college level shootings, they leave schools, teachers, and students horrified. No one really knows what causes the people to act in the manner they do, and choose a school for a shooting.

The past year, Germany has been plagued with large amounts of school shootings. They have mostly gone unexplained and that is the reason the Government decided to step in. Different local governments in Germany have decided to BAN all "killer" games at LAN events. This sadly has lead to the cancellation of multiple ESL Friday Night games, and it has now claimed the Convention-X-Treme tournament.

This is the first known event that a government has banned Counter-Strike, and all "killer" games, to help curb the violence. Many people are very upset, thinking they are drastically over stepping the limit. Convention-X-Treme officials say that they are looking for a new venue to be able to host the event, but at this time they were forced to cancel. Everyone that had already paid will receive a full refund for the event.

The question we have all be waiting for is if the German Government will make it a country-wide ban and eliminate Counter-Strike overall. Stay tuned to GotFrag.com for updates on gaming in Germany.

This would really hurt the cs scene in Europe, especially if the Germans bring the debate to the EU.

Really stupid logic. No one I know has any trouble recognizing life from games. Only a small percentage of a population would have that kind of problem.

Movies/TV would have much more of an influence on people than a video game. I think their intentions are good but the logic behind this decision is awful.

#11 i agree with 11 its not the underground counterstrike scene that is causing this problem. But is more of a cultural, social problem above all. People are still going to find a way to kill each other even if you outlaw gun games and guns themselves. Its redicolus what there doing and i hope this issue is resolved because cs is huge in germany and Europe.

#8:] its not the type of game, its the amount of time people spend on their PC. Shirking basic life necessities such as friends and family, and not having any responsibility in your life will lead you to severe depression and anxiety.

the most rediculous things is that WC3 was one of said "killer games".. how on earth its possible to link that to school shootings is beyond me and i think it highlights the flawed thought behind the ban

thats redicilous. they just use games as a scapegoat because they cant find a legit reason. mabey those kids were just effed up as a child. besides that, cs isnt THAT violent compared to other games, i mean there is a safelock option to make is less violent.

really??

like everyone else is saying, tv and the internet probably have more negative effects on people who aren't very stable mentally. on top of that cs isn't exactly the most graffic video game out there, AND it has a pretty reasonable following in germany

children that have mental problems shouldn't be playing video games and in the end its the parents fault for letting their child play video games in which they shouldn't be playing.

heyyyyyy my post was nuked. :(

it's true what i said. Just look at asian countries, instead of banning video games, they put limits on them. They understand what a 'video game' is and what limits are.

Germany, on the other hand, still doesn't get it, why? Well if I restate what I said in my nuked post, this one will probably be nuked be as well.

Heck, the baby boomers of America still view video games as a very bad habbit for their children.

[disclaimer: i did not mean for my nuked post to be racist in any way]

This is so fcked up. This is a step backwards in freedom and liberties and I'm sure many German's are outraged. I'm sure those kids who commit shootings have also played games like Mario. Why not ban that too? It obviously made them do it. Not like they have a chemical in balance in their head or anything.

Honestly, its not the game's fault. It's the parents fault. If they were raised correctly by their parents, none of this would happen. A parent should know if his/her child is capable of playing such a violent game based on his/her actions and every parent should know when their child should stop. And, every game has a rating just like every movie. They have E for everyone, T for Teen, M for Mature and etc. Perhaps they should be a little more strict on how these kids acquire the game or whether or not they can play it, rather than blaming it on the game itself.

It's sad that those kids will go out and kill others, but have they done background checks on each one of those kids? Were the parents abusive? How much time did the parents really spend with them? Perhaps there were bullies? Games are meant to be played to have fun. Parents need to watch their kids closer.

The fact that a government has enough power to ban a form of entertainment that many of its citizens enjoy is ludicrous. Vote libertarian!
