Counter-Strike: EM IV Chengdu Preview

By: Brett Sheffield - Published September 30, 2009 at 5:31 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Twelve of the top teams in the world descend upon Chengdu, China for the Extreme Masters IV Global Challenge.

Group A

Sweden fnatic - cArn, f0rest, dsn, GeT_RiGhT, GuX
China SC.United - Jungle, CKX, K1ngZ, Kuber, P1rate
China TyLoo - alex, goodrifle, tb, wx, xf

This group is great. Its almost certain that Fnatic will rock out in a first place victory over these teams. With Fnatic having a seemingly stacked roster, it's safe to say they are the force to stop here. SC.United has a shot at this, but the favorite to advance will be TyLoo. TyLoo had a great showing at E-Stars and even managed to beat SK. They did not do as well in the final event, but they showed great improvement over the weekend. One of the most notable players from the groups, Jungle, who is on SC.United is someone you have to look out for. He has been a favorite to watch for a while and can lead his team to a victory if he gets on fire. The final spot is really up for grabs, but look for TyLoo to take it.

Expected to advance: fnatic, TyLoo

Group B

Sweden SK Gaming - walle, allen, RobbaN, face, kHRYSTAL
South Korea Wemade FOX - glow, solo, garsia, bail, termi
Kazakhstan k23 - AdreN, anv1k, MihaO, N1ck3L, Turbo

This group definitely has some talent. With SK picking up face and kHRYSTAL they just might be stronger than ever. Wemade FOX had a bad showing at GameGune Mexico, but they are closer to their side of the world and will have a more "at home" feeling. All three of these teams were at E-Stars and finished close. k23 was beat out by WMF and SK, but they have changed one member of their roster and could be a threat. SK and WMF both should be able to take down k23 in this tournament. The close matchup should come from SK and WMF, but I think SK will have the momentum going into it with a strong lineup and fresh, young talent.

Expected to advance: SK, WMF

Group C

United States Evil Geniuses - n0thing, Storm, Warden, fRoD, lurppis
Brazil mibr - cogu, btt, bit, spacca, ton
Singapore TitaNs - Matrix!, StrykerX. sniggy, Fer, syck

This group is good. It has the American favorites of EG mixed with the Brazilian powerhouse of MIBR. It also has TitaNs, a team that seems to almost always qualify for WCG. MIBR is coming off a loss at the WCG Finals in Brazil, but I think they are looking forward. EG is coming off a victory at WCG, minus Lurppis, as well as a victory at GameGune Mexico where they were able to use Lurppis. With EG at full strength and Lurppis back in the game, they should be able to put up a great fight. I can see EG winning this group, but I can also see MIBR giving them some trouble. TitaNs have the ability to mess with both of these teams. If EG and MIBR limit their mistakes, they can take this with ease, but look out for that upset.

Expected to advance: EG, mibr

Group D

Germany Mousesports - cyx, gob_b, Kapio, Tixo, cash
China wNv Team Work - zy, Rita, smallboy, savage, Virgo
Uzbekistan Pincho Wings - episode, DiLex, exMI, jtx, Thommes

This group seems pretty straight forward. Mousesports dominated GameGune Spain, not dropping a single map the entire event, defeating the Polish Vitriolic in the process. They will be the favorites of this group, and anything but placing first over these two teams will be a disappointment. Always a strong team, especially on home turf, the Chinese squad of wNv, who have recently re-added Savage, should be the next team to qualify out of this group. Pincho Wings will have their work cut out for them if they wish to make bracket play. They are a rather unknown team, but have some impressive achievements in the Arbalet Cups. They will need to have the tournament of their careers if they wish to advance to bracket play.

Expected to advance: mouz, wNv
