Counter-Strike: Bootman's Playbook: EG looking to repeat

By: Chris Boutté - Published September 11, 2004 at 3:14 AM EDT - Writer Archive
The WCG Canada Finals are finally here with top teams such as nerve and heat, but the obvious favorite is team EG. EG has been on top of the Canadian scene for quite some time, and even represented Canada at WCG 2003 with a very nice finish. In this playbook we're going to get into the minds of some of the best players up north.

EG de_dust2 defense

I'm going to start this playbook off with something that has done nothing but irritate me since EverLAN when I saw how dominant EG is with this spawn hugging tactic. Basically EG sets up in a 2-1-2 with two in the spawn watching Long A, one watching middle (maybe above double doors from a triple boost) and two in B. Well EG basically gives up this site and sends three going through spawn with some great flashbangs bouncing off of the green boxes to flash the catwalk area, more flashes over the boxes to blind the bombsite, and the other two coming up the catwalk to sandwich the entire site.

Well teams, if someone does this to you and you can't figure out how to stop it here is some bootman knowledge for you. I would send four team members to Long A and one along the catwalk. From this tactic I would have an AWP jump into the Long A pit to ensure that nobody is covering it, from here the other three move up securing this area and then triple smoke the spawn entrance while the catwalk team member makes sure this is in fact the defensive setup. From here two go ahead into the bombsite and plant the bomb. The original team member at the catwalk covers it, while the two that planted the bomb remain in the site leaving one behind the wall close to the ramp at Long A for close range coverage with the AWP holds the Long A pit. There is no reason this strategy shouldn't work against this setup and I have yet to see a team try it after watching EG run this strat tournament after tournament.

Kolach/Lari

Kolach and Lari are going to be the B players for dust2. First off expect to see Lari with an AWP almost every round of the defensive side. EG's normal setup is going to have Lari working his way onto the platform with his AWP playing areas on the left railing or the back slanted green box. Kolach is going to be playing close range backup for Lari with an m4, basically floating around the site near the double doors and occasionally throwing an HE over the B tunnel to spot for a slow push from the terrorists.

Now, when these two see that the opposing team isn't coming B too often or the offense is weak B, they will spread out with Lari taking over the middle position and floating around all over with his AWP.

*Defensive note* Lari will be sniping a lot through spawn to watch Long A if it is being taken.

Stevenson/Tyndale/Bechdholt

EG has three setups for Bombsite A when they are not doing the spawn hugging formation.

1. One Long A two catwalk

This will have Tyndale sniping Long A either pushed up or back towards the bombsite with an AWP and Stevenson and Bechdholt covering catwalk aggressively with colts or in a headstack near the stairs. Your basic A setup.

2. Three Long A

This will be an obvious push with the team leading into Long A with several nades. From here they hold in three spaced out positions watching the rush. After the rush is secured they will attempt various stacks on the boxes at Long A. Don't worry though, if catwalk is taken these guys take it back just as easily as with the spawn hugging strat. These three will be leading from Long A with a great series of flash bangs to flash the catwalk and HE grenades into the actual bombsite.

3. Catwalk strat

This is a lot like Rival's normal setup with all three on the catwalk. Two will be watching the catwalk near the stair area or sometimes pushed up a little farther while one has his colt out and the other jumps to spot the lower B hallways. Meanwhile one sits at the double stacked boxes at the top of the stairs watching Long A, usually with a flash out to slow the Long A rush as soon as possible. Once again EG is giving up an area, but they have great practice with flashes and HE's to cover the entire site when the offense takes over, expect the same in this setup.

EG de_dust2 offense

after a series of fakes they stick together in a bulk of 3-4 when they attack a bombsite.

Starting off each round there will be a 2-2 split with Lari spotting the middle double doors with an AWP. From here Kolach and Tyndale walk to B watching for a push while Stevenson and Bechdholt cover Bombsite A. Both Bombsite A defenders have a variety of stacks in the middle area to watch for a catwalk push. All of which is while Lari stays still with his AWP watching the middle.

From here we see two different tactics from EG

The first is going to be going to bombsite B. Stevenson and Bechdholt head through lower B tunnel and Lari goes spawn. From here they slowly push out of the tunnels spotting for an AWP in the site and once it is clear to the green boxes in the site they begin smoking and flashing the site from the hallway in a pretty big clump and not much room to dodge HE nades. (hint hint)

The next tactic is going catwalk. Tyndale and Kolach come through lower B tunnels up to the catwalk to meet Stevenson and Bechdholt and push slowly with flashbangs all over the stairway. Lari will be coming up behind them at a distance keeping an eye on the double doors from catwalk with his AWP.

*Offensive note* Sometimes Lari will go Long A with his AWP to meet up with the team and keep an eye on the defense coming out of spawn.

from the looks of what you've wrote here, either EG have been keeping some strats in reserve or they're gonna be really predictable come WCG. i guess as long as their execution is good they cna keep stuff going but if they get countered by someone who read this they're in trouble ;o

who's the next playbook gonna be on?
I am not cool.

LOL bootman you always deliver right before a big event. I guess the point is to always work out new strats before each and every tournament, and keep the ones that are so good and difficult to predict that there's no feasable way to counter them.

Personally I think the way to work is have something which resembles a set strat, so it always looks like you're doing the same thing but have different "substrats" with different orders of peaks and grenades at different places and stuff like that. The other team will think you're doing the same thing each round but you'll throw another variation into it somewhere or other.

One example of how to do this used from the playbook say, is you could have Lari pick mid with his awp several rounds in a row on train and then do a 2-1-2 or w/e. Then the next round have him do it again but send the others to the inside bombsite.

Another thing would be to just do the same 2-1-2 but at a different time, one round start taking the site with around 45 seconds to go, and then next round do the same thing but take the site immediately, stuff like that.

This would allow teams to keep using the same strats, make it possible to write a playbook about their set strat but be near-impossible to determine in game what they're actually gonna do when a set event happens.

Not sure how well I structured the idea but I think you'll get me.
I am not cool.

I realize that this playbook started out basically harmless and as some great material to attract readers and people to Gotfrag. At this point, with big lan tournaments involving money and even more, how can you deliver an entire listing of the exact positions and strats of a team. How devastating is this, and how devastating was it for Rival in GGL? I think that this is great analysis that other teams in the tournament should have to put together for themselves. Now all they have to do is get on GF and now they have a big advantage on EG going in. These playbooks are put together great, but they just seem really destructive and harmful to the team being analyzed.

#14 - Reality is that teams SHOULD be doing this themselves. In the old 1.3 days, rdw used to review other teams demos for major matches--not just drill our strats. Look at ESPN, CBS Sports and any other media station out there that covers sports. Do they review NFL Games/teams and what to look for, as well as strats? Yep. Heck, if you buy the Madden football game, you GET the exact playbooks that he's broken down for you.

Moreover, as hurley pointed out, all the materials to do what boot or midway have done in any of their reviews is available to anyone that wants it--GotDemos?. One of the great things about CS is that the game has strategies in it in addition to great teamwork and personal skill. Those strats can and should be broken down by competitive teams. What we provide for Prime certainly doesn't account for what they might change in their strats right before the tournament.
