Counter-Strike: Bootman's Playbook: D-Skyline

By: Jonathan Siegfried - Published December 15, 2004 at 3:52 PM EST - Writer Archive
CPL is starting this week and it's time for Bootman to analyze the popular Finish team D-Skyline. D-Skyline has placed very well at previous CPL and LAN tourneys. In the playbook, Bootman analyzes what the unique minds of D-Skyline try to acomplish.

D-Skyline de_dust2 Defense

Tico/alfa

Tico and alfa are their bombsite B players. More often than not they like to play with colts. There is an exception where one may play with an AWP and he will likely be set up in the back of the bombsite behind the green boxes. Other than that, when they have colts they like to play outside of the bombsite with one sitting in the window and one floating around middle checking the double doors in middle and then coming back to peek halls from outside of the bombsite. Nothing too fancy, but this style of play may give the offense too much money from bomb plants.

Natu/digital/coali

These three play bombsite A and they play pretty much the same way every round It, however, got them into a little trouble when they played Rival last CPL. What D-Skyline likes to do is kind of old school and secure long A more than catwalk. The team depends on their bombsite retaking abilities more than meeting the enemy before they move up too far.

They start off the round with either two or three pushing long A to check for a rush. From here, two of them push up a little farther to the brown boxes to boost up and spot out of the double doors if they can. They play this site a little aggressively. Now, the player that is not boosted is the floater, he can help the long A player or the defensive catwalk player.

The one constant of D-Skyline is that they like to play catwalk from the long A ramp in the bombsite. Once they spot anything he calls for backup and the entire team throws HE grenades and flashes and does whatever they can to slow down the enemy. Since this is so defensive, Rival took advantage of their quick rotation and made them waste their nades on bad calls.

They have a couple different setups for long A, at times, that you can see in the screen shots, but nothing major.

D-Skyline de_dust2 offense:

On the offensive side of the map, D-Skyline has a few tricks but it always comes back to the same setup. No matter what D-Skyline may do throughout a round, when they are finally going to take the bombsite they are going to be in a group with four or five people.

D-Skyline really prefers bombsite A over the B bombsite. They have a couple different ways of taking this over, but like I said, it all comes back to the same setup.

Long A: This is the one we see the most from the team. It starts out with digital spotting the middle with his AWP and then moving down to the double stacked green boxes near the end of the catwalk. Meanwhile D-Skyline is sending four players long A. They have great cover down here and then they jump into the pit to check for any spotting AWPs. If the A bombsite is being played defensively they move up slowly, flashing the site and smoking the spawn entrance. After this they overtake the site.

Catwalk: They like to do a couple different things in middle. Sometimes they will boost someone above the lower B halls to check catwalk while three crouch and move up. Sometimes they will all just rush the catwalk. While this is happening, digital will be going Long A with his AWP to clear out the area.

B: When D-Skyline goes B it is usually on a save rush. Even if they decide to go bombsite B on a gun round it will involve all five and not your normal 1-4 split we usually see from them.

Basically when you play a team that likes to do this on offense, the key is going to be your nades. First priority should be an HE grenade. Using an HE grenade on a team like D-Skyline is like shooting four people in the chest at once if it lands right. Two or three HE grenades can destroy a team that groups up too much. It is really going to take some aggressive play to spot and see where D-Skyline is headed though.

#1, it wasn't - but we can only review what's available. There aren't any solid demos with the new lineup.

I think any top teams would have scouted d-sky, or would have scouted them if they matchedup in CPL #11... And I seriously thought the same thing #10, I was interested to know how they play mill particularly.

Seriously, everone is talking how they want e-sports to progress etc. Teams really need to think more about scouting oponents more, im sure many of the pro-teams would benefit by hireing people to do scouting on their oponents similiar to what bootman is doing. While i dont agree with everything he writes its still a really good scoutreport!

Esports won't progress if tournaments such as CPL keep giving small prizes.

umm, i dont mean to belittle the job that bootman does or anything, but i think that teams can and do scout out their opponents too, atleast the ones they are "afraid of"

also, it is unlikely that dsky will play exactly the same as they used to with a new lineup, so if any teams playing them assume that they will, reading this article could be as much of a disadvantage as an advantage.
