Counter-Strike: Bootman's United 5 vs. Mouz Wrapup

By: Chris Boutté - Published December 18, 2004 at 2:45 PM EST - Writer Archive
United 5 vs. mouz was one of the biggest comebacks in CPL history. After mouz won a huge 12-3 half, United 5 was able to come back and send it into overtime. Come inside to see bootman's wrapup of the tactics that made this match so intense.

This was one of the most intense matches I have spectated in quite some time. Mouz took a 12-3 lead in the first half and United 5 was able to come back to tie it and send the match into overtime - unbelievable. This match started out poorly for United 5, but I'm sure you can tell that just by the 12-3 score that mouz was able to put up in the first half. United 5 had some great momentum rounds in the first half, but mouz's tactics were just too much for the United 5 team.

Mouz had some awesome offensive tactics. They would send a few players to fake long A while the rest performed a plethora of fakes and nade baits to keep United 5 on their toes. Almost every round started with the same tactic, with one faking long and mouz smoking spawn from middle so that the A players could not rotate. This would give mouz a 4 on 2 advantage on sunman and da_bears in bombsite B, which is where they usually headed. If anything else, mouz would send three or four long A and take advantage of United 5's defensive catwalk setups.

United 5 played their basic two in B (da_bears and sunman), leaving middle open. The other three would play aggressively on catwalk, with Hare would spotting long A from the catwalk. When a team sets up like this, it gives up long A and the defence depends on their flashes and HE grenades to retake the bombsite. United 5 really should have gone to a 2-1-2 setup after nadeing long A. The half would have gone much better for United 5 if, after they sent their three HE's into long A, only two fell back to their normal positions on catwalk while one played middle from spawn.

United 5 ended up losing the first half 12-3 and it really hurt the team's spirit. However, the second half went exactly in the right direction for United 5; well, after the pistol round that is. United 5 lost the pistol round, and now mouz needed to win only three of the remaining fourteen rounds for the win. Hare called a d.eagle/armor rush to B and it worked perfectly. United 5 was all headshots upon entering the bombsite and mouz’s automatic weapons did nothing for them. This round is what turned everything in United 5’s favor.

In all honesty I didn't think United 5 had this match at all. Mouz has an amazing defensive half; they are very aggressive and keep the offence blind at all times. As I am an analyst, I always like to talk about how tactics win matches, but this was all about frags. Hare went an amazing 21-3 after an incredible first half, sending the game into overtime where josh took over.

In the first round of overtime, sunman and da_bears knew exactly what mouz was doing and just mowed them down. Sunman took down three in the middle with his colt and da_bears finished two off in the B halls with his AWP. In the second round josh took down four mouz players, and three more in the third round. This gave United 5 a boost of confidence going into the second half with a 3-0 lead.

Hare knew exactly how mouz was going to play their defensive side and told the entire team to slow it down a bit. Mouz managed to get the first kill of the second half, and after looking at our lovely stats system I knew this gave mouz a 77% chance of winning the round. However, United 5 pulled together and took the round despite these odds, sending mouz home.

Up next for United 5 is Begrip, and there are many more matches to watch so I’m out for now.
