Counter-Strike: The Flashbang Heard Round the World

By: Mark Cheben - Published December 18, 2004 at 3:01 PM EST - Writer Archive
Mark "Jesuit" Cheben wrote this article from the CPL about the conterversy surrounding the NoA, EYE match.
The CPL home to controversy and broken dreams has another drama to add to its illustrious list. The upper bracket match between EYE and NoA has turned from a solid NoA victory to a decisive defeat following a rules violation. NoA, the team who did not know how to flash-bug nuke at EVERLAN, has run into another problem with the infamous floating box on nuke. Initially NoA won the first half 9-6, but upon review the admins discovered that on the 8th round NoA threw three bugged flashes resulting in all the rounds including and after were awarded to EYE. Upon this adjustment EYE was awarded the half 10-5.

This is due to a new CPL rule which states:
9.00k Any competitor or team accidentally utilizing ANY exploit or bug in a map or game will forfeit that round and all remaining rounds for the half. Players need to be responsible for their actions in regards to know map or game bugs/exploits.

EYE went on to take the match 16-8 after a 6-3 second half. Following the match both teams looked dejected reflecting on the fact that neither team had really won or lost. It’s a shame this new CPL rule had to be showcased in such a way, and hopefully NoA can recover in the rest of the tournament.

*Editorial addition by Jason "Anomoly" Bass*

This is truly not the fault of NoA, EYE or the CPL. This was an accident that resulted in an advantage for NoA in the round in question. So, the ruling by the CPL is the correct one. This begs the question as to why has Valve, after all of these years not fixed this issue? This is one of the first times where this could result in a difference between winning a major event and not. The monetary difference that NoA could see is huge. They very well would have one this match and possibly the event if it were not for this bug in the map, that has been known about for as long as I can remember and I have been playing a long time. It is unfortunate, and I hope Valve will take notice and do something about it.

a shame? no. you only hear 2-3 teams at every major tournament do it, and it's always the same few teams.

noa deserved to lose if they can't throw a flash properly, or dont know the map well enough to know where to throw the flash so that it doesnt trigger the bug. smoke is no excuse. nuke is so old that people at their level should know the map like the back of their hand.

EYE disputed an illegal flash in the 7th round. CPL rules say every round after that round is forfeited.

EYE CRYED to Angel Muñoz and he give them all rounds!. If you sex with the organization, you win!.

#7 In nuke especially timeing is very important... in this case its a split second flash to avoid getting picked. I can understand doing it accidentally. Bottom line maps with these exploits shouldn't be played in tournament play until fixed.

Yeah #11, really sad to see that CPL doesn't have valve fix these maps.

no kidding, fix the map. this exploit has been around for way to long, and the fact that valve (or anyone for that matter) has made no attempt to fix it is simply unacceptable.

i agree #11, they shouldn't play it knowing all the problems. but again, if it is played, teams of this level should know it well it enough not to do it. heck, after so many scrims and matches in cal, i've probably come accross it once or twice?

sure it's boring as hell when this happens, but if you play at the cpl you should know how to throw flashes.

If you've only come acrossed it once or twice either one of two things are going on:

A) you do not play very often. Next to never. On nuke atleast.

B) you play horrible teams that do not use flash bangs and/or do not use flash bangs yourself.

Thanks, and may there be peace on earth.

well just fix the maps where there is flash exploits instead of putting rules man ... its so simple.

Great job Valve - this is a model example of your 'competency'.
Great job CPL - you really know how to 'solve' the flashbugs, by punishing the players and teams.

if there are 3 flashes doing the same thing in a round, i somehow doubt they were all "accidental split-second flashes" to save them from being picked...

strange how it's always NoA who get caught though isnt it.
I am not cool.

NoA was rushing and threw flashes into about three smokes. I would hardly call that purposeful, but again the rule says it doesn't have to be, which I feel should obviously be rewritten to take purpose into account.

errr #14 and #36 they probably disputed straight away but CPL rules say you must play out the half and then the admins review the demo. Please get a clue before opening your mouths (or at least using your fingers to type)...

And what #16 said. The match wasnt over even if you ignore the flashbug. There was still a 2nd half in which EYE were playing pretty damn sharp.

Why should it take whether or not its on purpose into account? Then any idiot can practice it a billion times, throw two smokes and throw a flashbug but pretend it was an accident. This way its black and white. You throw a bug you lose rounds. And even if someone didnt practice it, the "accidental" flashbugs still affect the round severely.

Move along.

NoA should of rightfully won that match. Because if it would of been EYE who did that like for example EYE ct and NoA T and NoA was still winning they would just let EYE go it was a comman mistake thats all i dont know why EYE is getting happy everyone knows NoA should of won.

#43 dude... NoA would NOT have "let it slide" if they were in EYE's position. No team in the competition would have. Stop talking out of your arse.

And anyway... none of this crying on www.gotfrag.com is going to change jack. EYE have won.
