Counter-Strike: Bootman's 3D vs. Rival Wrapup

By: Chris Boutté - Published December 18, 2004 at 5:03 PM EST - Writer Archive
The top two American teams faced off today on de_nuke. 3D and GamerCo had a great match with GamerCo coming back from a 12-3 first half loss. Come inside for bootman's breakdown of the match.
This was a match that the whole North American community was waiting for: the newly crowned number one team in the USA, 3D, and the second place team GamerCo(Rival). Last night, in fact, myself, brooks, weenus, and moses were in the D!E room and they all decided to bet on the match; I stayed out of it because I knew how close this match would be.

This match was just frag after frag. GamerCo's lack of teamwork and tactics really showed in the first half – well, their tactics as well as KSharp not missing a single shot. GamerCo tried absolutely everything: they went fast, they went slow, they went upper, they went lower. Nothing worked for them. The entire half was completely controlled by 3D. As the half came to a close, 3D got a tad bit cocky, and gave up the last three rounds to GamerCo after leading this half 12-0.

The next half came around, and all of GamerCo thought they had the momentum and the skill to take this half. They had just won the last three rounds and all they needed to do was take the pistol to keep that momentum going, and they did just that.

Now, I don't like to promote my playbooks, but come on. The whole reason I started them is because I saw how predictable teams were on defence. This is certainly true of GamerCo, who used the same setups I wrote about in their GGL playbook. When you are an American team that does nothing but scrim and play matches against other top American teams, you should know their setups by heart. 3D did not. GamerCo played an amazing match, don't get me wrong, but 3D could have made some big changes; not only in analyzing GamerCo’s defence, but a few other things as well:

1) Miller's AWP 2nd Half: NON-EXISTENT! The first half Miller had almost 30 frags and was completely on with the AWP. Where was it second half? Either he felt frisky with the AK, or they didn't have enough money. Why no money? On to point number two!

2) Save, 3D! IT'S OK!: 3D has a horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE tendancy of buying d.eagles too much. They would lose with no bomb plant and then still buy d.eagles the next round and lose with no bomb plant again. Come on 3D, just save for rifles. It'll work, I promise.

3) Not acting on flashbangs: 3D may have known exactly where GamerCo was, and they kept them blind in the upper bombsite pretty well. The problem was, 3D would blind an entire site and then sit back until after the flashes wore off, before attempting to take the site. They might has well saved the $200 and given it to Torbull.

Other than 3D's mistakes, GamerCo had an amazing half. The most notable players this half were Hanes and Torrez. These two played in the ramp room and would not only lock down that area, but were also able to retake the upper site every time if fell.

3D played a horrible offensive half and it showed. 3D really should have hit the upper site with smokes and flashes at the double doors to blind ph33r, sent a flash out hut to blind either exodus or medias, and taken the site. De_nuke is all about fast offences and 3D didn't show this at all and it sent them to the losers bracket.

Now GamerCo will be playing team compLexity in the upper bracket semi-finals after compLexity pulled a huge upset over CPL favorites D-Skyline.
