Counter-Strike: Bootman's Consolation Wrapup

By: Chris Boutté - Published December 19, 2004 at 1:31 AM EST - Writer Archive
NoA had a long fought battle through the losers bracket after taking a tough loss to team EYE on de_nuke, but managed to come back into the finals with a victory over team GamerCo. This was a great match played by both team and it really came down to some crucial rounds. Come inside and check out bootman's analysis of the match.
NoA and GamerCo just played a very close match on de_cpl_mill for the consolation finals. NoA has had a very long route to this match after winning the offensive side of de_nuke against team EYE, until a flashbang was disputed. This hurt NoA's spirits, but they managed to clear a path to the finals.

I knew from the start that this was going to be a very close match. Both teams have amazing defensive sides on de_cpl_mill, but two completely different styles.

Last CPL we saw GamerCo take SK to the limit in multiple overtimes on this same map. They did this by playing extremely aggressive. GamerCo would flash and peek all parts of the map and keep SK on their toes and never knowing what to expect. It was very effective and would have been great to see against NoA's fakes.

NoA's de_cpl_mill, on the other hand, looks as though it has been practiced for hours and hours on end. They have one of the most intricate defensive sides of mill that I have seen in a while. All of them have perfect chemistry for all of their outlandish setups and it definitely pays off.

NoA started out on the defense and tried a very risky pistol round. NoA used the advantage of the choke points to push up on GamerCo, but GamerCo was more than prepared and took down NoA within seconds. From here, it would be a tough road for NoA.

As I said before, NoA has some great defensive setups, but torrez put a huge monkey wrench in their production. He started out buying the terrorist sniper rifle and was absolutely on with it. He was headshotting any and everything jumping across or around middle, from the start of the first gun round. This really hurt NoA, putting them in a lot of 4 on 5 situations extremely early in the round.

NoA was also not prepared for GamerCo's tactics on this map. NoA's defense's weak spot is definitely the middle. GamerCo did tactics that looked a lot like a split middle/B rush on de_dust2 in this match. They would smoke up the middle and come up left ramp at the same time and take over bombsite A. From here it was all about whether the NoA players in the bombsite could dodge the flashbangs well enough.

This match was like watching the same situations over and over again and that's why this half was so close. GamerCo managed to take this half 8-7 and most of the community more than likely thought NoA was done for, due to their previous showings on this side of the map.

Well in the pistol round of the second half, GamerCo thought to themselves, "Well it didn't work for NoA. Maybe it can work for us". They did the exact same push as NoA did in their pistol round, but to the opposite storage area where NoA was waiting. The same exact thing happened and NoA took the terrorist pistol round.

NoA managed to do the exact same tactics against GamerCo that they have done all tournament on de_cpl_mill, but they learned to sell their fakes a little bit more. They did an excellent job of baiting in GamerCo's nades and then overtaking a bombsite virtually untouched.

After a long streak of NoA, GamerCo finally caught on to their default tactic that they were working off of and began to counter it. It finally came down to a decision to buy and get a bomb plant, or save for the last round for NoA, and shaGuar felt confident and instructed the team to go for the buy.

When shaG did this, he also realized how GamerCo had adapted to their default tactic. ShaG decided instead of faking the left ramp and middle, to send two through the sewers and go door while the other three faked the right bombsite. This worked perfectly and really caught GamerCo off guard. NoA managed to take this bombsite and plant the bomb in a 4 on 2 situation, but with GamerCo's nades they were able to retake the bombsite. NoA was very clutch and managed to take the win, the round, as well as the match.

Now NoA has a great chance to get their revenge on team EYE and possibly be the first team to come out of the loser brackets to take the championships.
