Counter-Strike: Random bracket shakes up ACON

By: Jason Coene - Published June 03, 2005 at 11:56 AM EDT - Writer Archive
ACON has chosen to seed the brackets randomly. While adding tension and fear of the unknown to the teams participating, it would ultimately be very good to some, bad for others, and may change the spectator's view of the entire tournament - wait until you see the surprise first round match up.

Written by Trevor "Midway" Schmidt on location in Xian, China

With all of the major favorites sitting around me, the randomly selected 16 team double elimination tournament was a fun filled peanut gallery but nervous tension surrounded every pick. A growing fear strengthened in two waves. The first wave was the obvious overwhelming skill present in the lower bracket.

The selection process went with one team from each first round being paired, then back through from top to bottom for the second team that would meet them. So the first four teams in the upper bracket consisted of mostly Asian teams which felt weaker when compared to f`zero, aTTax, Quash and SSV Lehnitz of the lower bracket. It was only more confirmed when the second team was announced for the top four matches.

Adding the French, Italians with only Defusekits, Belgians, and Lunatic, Koreans, as the stand outs the top bracket really was disappointment. By process of elimination everyone in the crowd knew that Complexity was left along with Virtus.Pro. Just down from me the f`zero guys had a sinking suspicions that they’d get matched up against Complexity who sat right behind them - nervous laughs were all exchanged. Landed was pulled and the Aussies breathed a sigh of relief, their hearts still pounding.

All of that added to the pressure of a possible match with SSV Lehintz, as everyone saw the possibility looming. At first it was only a joke, as people wondered at the chance but as Virtus.Pro was called next to face aTTax in what should be a very good match as well, nerves got tighter. Then when the Malaysian team NBTD-50 was called a gasp from the crowd could be heard.

“Was it really possible, SSV Lehnitz against coL in the first round?” whispered the crowd. Even the tournament admins looked at each other as the gamble to do random seeding may not have paid off. Complexity wasn’t complaining, beyond the lack of warm up matches they knew a match between the top two teams coming in was inevitable.

Personally it’s sad to see such a loaded lower half of the bracket. Beyond the obvious SSV Lehnitz against Complexity, at least 5 of the top 7 teams are in the lower eight matches. The losers are obviously teams like Landed, f`zero, Quash and NBTD-50 who all would have a decent chance of winning the upper bracket.

I think brackets being done this way is a lot better. Let's face it, having seeds with "good" teams set up to cruise through easier teams is a boring tournament.

Having random selections is a much better way of handling things for A) Spectators and B) Lower seeded teams who now have a shot at playing another low-tier team. When you can set up a quality match in the first round of a tournament, you either have an excellent set of teams, or in this case, you just set up something spectators won't mind sitting down to watch. Whereas other tournaments will force spectators to wait until later in the brackets to bother to view anything.

Besides, in any tournament, you have to beat all the teams to win the whole tournament anyways, and anyone who complains about it, doesn't deserve to win. Don't agree? Last time I checked you had to prepare and practice for these events, as well as qualify, so it shouldn't matter who you face and when. If your mind is focused on complaining about an opponent, you better be ready to handle them instead of crying.

but then all that will happen is the winner of the tough match gets an easier game straight off. normally, they would have an easier match then the hard one.

the only real difference is the map.

#10, the point of a tournament is to have the best teams win and have the final standings be an accurate representation of the talent pool, not to provide a shot for worse teams to win or place well. I agree that if a team will win it all then they will have to beat everyone anyway but for second tier teams who come to place well (not to win), the final standings won't do them justice.

Watching two bad teams play each other doesn't mean it is a "better match", it just means that the match is closer... Bad teams don't become good just because they play in the finals.

A randomly seeded event like this might cause good match ups early on but later in the event the matches will be blowouts. I would rather see blowouts in the first and second round than in the finals, and I think most fans / tournament organizers would agree.

the whole point of the seeding system is that it allows the "lesser" teams a chance to truly prove their skill by beating their seed to acheive a good finish. random draw -> random result. if there is an upset, you can be the same people who say "random draw is good" will be the ones complaining about how it screwed out of a win they would have otherwise taken.

I read the article and it was an incredibly good one! Nice Midway! I agree, the opening match between SSV and coL seems like the hottest game of the tournament but since SSV lost Snajdan and Zet (according to me their best players) to kixer and Hartman it might play out too much in coLs favor. Kixer is a really really good player. Hartman was an outstanding player before, but his skill is questionable since he has been inactive for a very long time. I think there are more teams in China that can take out SSV.

#10 Almost every tournament in any kind of sport is done with seedings. There is a reason for it. #10 has it. Trust me, it makes for a much more entertaining end to a tourney. Also, it doesn't hurt bad teams, they are still going to have to beat those top teams to win anyways, and they have a better chance of doing so early in the tournament before the great teams get fully into tournament mode. With a stacked lower half of a bracket, a team that would normally deserve 4th place could go out in the second round. I'm sorry, but that's not exciting, because then a random team from upper half will play for 4th and get blown away. I have participated in many tennis and foosball tournaments, been a tournament organizer for foosball and halo tournaments, and to run a tournament like Acon5 is rediculous.

these brackets are terrible, good teams seeded against each other could potentially make a top 5 team come 2nd last.
