Counter-Strike: Catch-Gamer bsl interviewed!

By: Stuart Brooks - Published June 26, 2005 at 2:13 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Brooks from GotFrag recently had a chance to sit down and talk with bsl from Catch-Gamer and discussed his history, his outlook for WEG and his current team, Catch-Gamer. Come inside to see what he has to say.

Bsl, you have been around the community for a long time. Could you give us a brief description of the teams you have played on?

Yo, my name's Jonas Alsaker Vikan, 23 years hailing from Trondheim, Norway. I've been traveling the world playing in and against top teams for over 3 years now - including the Meredia/Spacebar soapopera, MIBR, NoA and currently I'm with Catch Gamer.

Many people consider NoA to be the first team to be an international team, but you were a part of Mibr and really put them on the map. What made you want to be apart of a Brazilian team who was relatively unknown? What was your role in the team?

Well NoA was the first truly international team player-wise, I was the sole foreigner in MIBR. I'm sure everybody has heard the joining story with me going to Brazil on vacation and before I knew I was playing with them. Upon being asked to stay with them for the summer I was a little bit uncertain but decided that life's an adventure and the best thing to do is just to go with whatever's being thrown at you at any given time. It was a great experience playing for them and I loved every minute of it. I was the captain, strat-caller - whatever it's called these days .. oh, and also - I was KIKOOO and pred's big bear !

You also helped create NoA and you helped them place very well at their first CPL. It looked like you were let go relatively easy. What happened?

Hmh - if you look at my career I have been in two big controversies - the Spacebar "affair" and the NoA thing. Both places involved knoxville, and ultimately in both cases he was the reason for what went down. In Spacebar he wanted me out of the lineup, but the sponsors declined so he took the team and left and in NoA he was responsible for having me cut. Although I wasn't very happy about it I felt okay seeing as I didn't want to live in Los Angeles for 3 months to play with him and the rest of the NoA team at the time (except Lars the tank). Now the other players agreed at that time and NoA crashed out of two events even after picking up a player, element, who - both result and reputation-wise is better than me. The reason for which I won't speculate at other than to say that I don't think it can be blamed on his young polar-bear shoulders.

You have also created your current team, Catch-Gamer. What made you want to create a Norwegian team?

After having played abroad for over 2 years in Brazilian, inter-continental and even a British team I kinda wanted to come full circle and go back to my roots ! The timing seemed to be perfect as the Catch Communications company were looking to sponsor a team to try and compete with the best in the world. They asked me to put together and lead a team and our lineup initially consisted of bsl, juven9le, Juzam, DaY, Slick Silver and Luke. After winning CPL Turkey we brought in zevy to replace Luke/Slick Silver who had to step it up in real life ... so to speak !

Could you give us a little background on your sponsor, Catch Communications? Why did they want to get involved in the CS community?

Well they have been involved for over 2 years through the gaming community, www.catch-gamer.no - which has grown to unite the Norwegian community and it has over 35,000 users at the moment. Catch Communications delivers the very best high-speed Internet connections in Norway, their involvement in gaming through the community and our team is a unique example of a big corporation taking an active initiative into the enormous pool of gamers out there.

How have you and your team been spending your time in Korea so far?

Our first 1-2 weeks in Korea was practice, practice and practice. The possibilities a tournament like WEG gives teams for practice and preparation is really great, and by taking that seriously we gave ourselves a great shot at a top 5 finish which was our goal going into season 2! After progressing from the first group phase it has become increasingly difficult to keep up our practice schedule as teams seem tired from endless hours going at it on the various de_maps - so we're trying to prepare as best we can as well as experiencing this great asian metropolis, Seoul.

No one really expected you guys to go this far, myself included. How does it feel to place this well with the best teams in the world in attendance?

Well it's always great to be an underdog but we have been playing really well these last few months by winning CPL Turkey and placing 7th at CPL Spain, after a close game with the eventual winners - Mousesports - this lack of confidence in our team surprised me somewhat.... We knew how good we could be and now I'm pretty sure everyone else, including master-of-predictions, knows too.

Do you have a preference on who you will play in the Finals at WEG? If so, why?

No at this point I don't care at all - the teams that are left are all worthy of playing in the finals and I'm sure it will be a great match regardless of the opponent.

Thank you for your time bsl. Hopefully I'll be able to predict you guys right for once. GotFrag wishes you the best of luck in the finals. Any last words?

Thanx for the interview - thanks for the support from fans world-wide - thanks for the great support Catch Communications gives gaming in Norway (visit www.catch-gamer.no for exclusive catch material) - finally, I want to thank my four teammates; DaY, Juve9le, zevy and Juzam for being the best; we made it guys, what a ride it has been so far!

bsl seems chill. Catch gamer is doing extremely well. I also remember they almost beat mouz at the cpl spain stop, only losing 16-14. I expect them to be one of the top teams in every event they attend.

edit: ok read the i-view. Seems like a cool guy, sucks about NoA but elemeNt turned out to be a good thing for that team. Best of luck to Catch with the remaining WEG 2 season.

Wow?

Anyway, great interview, and bsl is one of my favorite players so if they won WEG2 that would rock. Also, it just occurred to me that NoA is on hiatus, so it would be cool seeing Naikon play for Catch.

NO really, BSL is an honest guy with a lot of love for E-sports, tho forming a team with a person who kicked you out of the team you were in before, sounds wierd =)

Anyway, gl in the future Catch, everyone in Norway hope you win =)
