Counter-Strike: Pretty Good For a Girl

By: Leah - Published July 28, 2005 at 2:03 PM EDT - Writer Archive
In this community submitted article, leahgirl gives us her take on the growing female eSports scene. Leah uses her knowledge of the female tournament at ESWC 2005 to bring up some very valid points.

This is a community submitted article via GotFrag's on site "submit original article". The opinions expressed inside this article may or may not reflect those of GotFrag and it's staff.

With ESWC 2005 wrapping up one of the largest female competitions in Counter-Strike, it gives the community the opportunity to reevaluate the progression and direction of female gaming. Twenty-four teams from around the globe attending a major event would suggest that female gaming has come a long way from its grass roots. Or has it?

The fact is that the ESWC 2005 female tournament was merely an exhibition of female gaming. The ESWC was not a competition to showcase highly talented Counter-Strike play but instead was an exhibition to merely showcase the female sector of the Counter-Strike community. Taking away gender differences reveals that this event was principally an exhibition of less world class Counter-Strike played by a very lucky minority who have no disadvantage to the majority.

Bigger female tournaments with greater prize money awards are seen as a step forward for female gaming, when in reality they are nothing but a farce. With 'male' gaming, the competition was first to come, then came the money and tournaments. Throwing more money at girl gaming in order to raise the level of competition is thinking backwards.

It is my argument that female leagues are being hosted for all of the wrong reasons. Whilst the girls involved with these leagues claim that the only reason they are participating is because they are trying to look after the development of female gaming, it seems that the only people they are looking after is themselves.

I pushed the question to girl gamers, "Why should girls be so privileged to be flown around the world and to play each other when male teams of comparable skill level are lucky to even get web space and a twelve player server?"

Some of the responses I received were:

Written 16/5 12:22 by Le1a (SWW) "Well as I said, nice to see everyone have so different feelings about it.”

Written 16/5 13:25 by bieke (-secrecy-) "Plus if u are a girl explain me why you should enter a mixed tournament while it’s easier to win some money in the girl’s tournaments."

Written 16/5 13:15 by aNouC (x6tence.AMD) "Most of the European teams practice 99% of their time against males, they just visit female tournaments because they are easier to win and you get money from it, wouldn’t you go to an event to try to get some thousands of euros every now and then?"

And that is it in a nutshell. Why would they bother trying any harder than they need to when it is all given to them on a plate with a silver spoon.

This is definitely not raising the skill of female gaming. Giving girls the easy way out means girl gaming is always going to be just that - 'girl' gaming, and girls will never be taken seriously by the greater community. We'll always be 'pretty good for a girl'. Females will never be respected as players and the female community will always be seen as a novelty.

It is all very well to throw stones from the road side, but why have girls taken to their own leagues and competitions in the first place. Who is to blame? In a word: everyone.

Donna 'bag_lady' has already brought to light the maturity problem in the Counter-Strike community concerning sexism. The general attitude towards girls has persuaded females to stick to their own groups. Any group that is treated as inferior will naturally unite to provide themselves with strength as a group. We then see the emergence of girl clans. Sure there is no harm in that, in fact sponsors see it as an easy way to gain much wider exposure. Girl teams naturally accept these offerings, and why would they not? Would any team not want to be sponsored by Nvidia?

The reality of it is that we are seeing amateur Counter-Strike teams sponsored by blue chip companies that are known to only sponsor the most skilled teams. The greater community naturally scoffs at these 'professional' girl teams receiving prestigious sponsorship packages and thus the slander continues. This curtain of international female competitions with big prize purses cannot hide the fallacy which the community sees through. The slander continues and girls further segregate themselves from what could potentially be a competitive, unisex community.

It is a recognizable cycle that needs to be stopped if girls are to ever be taken seriously.

First, girl tournaments need to reduce their prize purses and take on a more promotional role. This will still encourage girls to get more involved in competitive gaming, but will also cement the notion that playing in established tournaments and leagues is the only way to win significant prize money and to gain international fame.

It is all in the direction. Yes, throwing more money at girl tournaments will definitely make more teams participate and take competitive gaming more seriously but it also causes more ridicule, discourages girls from trying to play against males, and generally divides the community further. Is this the direction we want to take female gaming?

Girls, guys never shut the door on us to the high levels competition, we shut it on them. Until we open the door we will never be true competitive gamers and will remain pretty good 'for a girl'.

If girls want to compete on a separate field with different tournaments, then that's fine with me, as long as those tournaments aren't taking away from my prize money. Neither do I think that girls should limit themselves to playing girls-only tournaments. I think the best situation would be to allow girls to compete in any type of tournaments they want, the best players will be self-motivated enough to enter male tournaments for the larger cash prizes and prestige (think Michelle Wie in golf) while the average girl gamer can compete against other similarly-minded girls.

Nice article, girls play games differently in my opinion, so you can't compare the boys level with girls level.

Seriously #11 has it. I played with a bunch of girls once and they explode on each other and cat fights ensue. They don't have the same style of play as guys. Sorry.

Ohnoes my opinion differs. :[

No, but seriously, I'm going to be blunt.

I've never seen a girls team that looked good enough to play the top male clans. I don't have a problem with letting them play the guys, whatever. But just don't expect it to be easy. I truthfully haven't seen a team as good as the guys.

Maybe I missed some team or something. I'm not trying to preach against the girls. Show me some demos that you think are CPL worthy. I'm really not trying to be anti-girl-gamer.

Been saying this since day 1 of the "female only competitions". If they want to have equal recognition then start winning tournys that include the males. Good read and I am glad you have such an opinion.

I really don't look at girls differently then guys. I just look at how they play. I've never really seen a girls team that has wanted to put as much dedication and time into it as the guys do. Girls are just genetically different. Sure you can say to me "Well I mean they play games...isn't that enough?" Well OK, so a girl is playing video games which isn't usual for the most part, but theres still that girl gene in there. I don't think girls look at the game the same way. Maybe its just me. Its just my opinion.

I think it would be great if they weren't seperated from the guys, but I just haven't seen any teams that are impressive enough to take down alot of the guy teams.

I agree with the article, it's far too true. The only female gamer i know of that has competed on an even scale with men is Queen* but even she realised she could get more money playing in female competitions and so she joined Les Seules.

good read - hes right, there are no physical differences between guys and girls when it comes to gaming. they have the chance to buy the same exact equipment we do. They have no disadvantages because "they can't move their mouse fast enough because they're more physically handicapped then guys are". Very Very good read.

OK I finally figured out what I was trying to blurt out before:

Girls have been confined to Girls Only competitions so when they finally move out of this its going to be kind of a stun when they have to play the guys who, most people can admit, are probably slightly more skilled than the girls teams. I'm not saying girls are just genetically worse in anyway, I'm saying if you took 3D or NiP and put them up against a random team from the girls section, the girls most likely wouldn't do so hot because they have been stuck playing girls.

So I agree with the article when it says Girls Only competitions aren't helping.

Its going to be rough at first for the girls to get used to the guys style of play, but I'm sure if they want it enough they can pull ahead of the guys teams.

Good luck girls :)

I was thinking the same when I saw all these girls teams getting attention recently.

I really wouldn't mind having a female on my team, but the only girls that play CS, play on girls teams.

good article, this reflects most of the professional community from different interviews and such

it is hilarious when the online girls league's rules state "before a match, an admin must come into the ventrillo server to verify each competitor is female"

#28 they cant keep up because they dont play on the level it takes to just "keep up"

Listen. girls need their own league. It's not fair for them to compete with guys. For god sake, we guys have bigger wrist compared to them. We are physically superior. Be fair.

roffles @ #28 , i dont have much respect for female gamers because over the years ive scrimmed against them and a few(just a few) most were blatantly cheating. actually only one team which was wasabi, and if they were that good they would be competeing in higher cal leagues , as well as lans. watch our for wasabi

From personal experience, I've noticed girls play well (granted they have decent skill) with a group of guys...however I've noticed an either unusually cruel silent tension if there are two girls in the mix on the same team OR they blow up at eachother for very minor things...a sort of competitiveness with eachother that just doesn't translate well into teamplay. I'm sure the female pros at higher levels have the correct attitudes...but the lower tier girls teams and other individual female gamers that are trying to make it to the top need to get over that pent up aggression they seem to harbor towards eachother...a promising girls clan I knew in particular even disbanded because of these reasons...just a thought.

rolf at #35, that means all males with smaller wrists should be put into the female league? or all the giant females get put in with the male leagues?

The thing is, girls CANNOT compete with men on an equal level in certain "sports" because and only because of their sex. Some examples are: Basketball, Football, swimming, etc.. the list goes on and on. CS is included in this batch of sports that girls are not on equal footing in when compared with guys. Face it: Guys are better than girls at games and will always be better, its a fact of evolution, its why males dominate this society.
