could be done with xfi card or audigy you use 2.1 on the card and 5.1 in game? or was it 5.1 on the card and 2.1 in game? and there was some console settings you had to set also i cant remember
Source does a poor job with positional audio on two channels, so it's quite the gain you get from exporting 5.1 and using software to down-mix the channels. Your ears can tell what's behind you from only 2 sources based on the changes sound goes through while traveling through your ear. X-Fi has made software to mimic that, and it works quite well.
Besides, EAX5 support makes a world of difference in other games.
