Counter-Strike Source: Five with Batter of PUB

GotFrag's Elliot "Chimera" Falvert-Martin speaks with Stuart "Batter" Merriman in this week's "Five with" installment.


This week there were a majority of games resulting in default. Do you think it's because people are not enjoying the league? or do you think something external is driving them away like the World Cup?

I think people are enjoying the league, it’s not that. I think maybe a lot of clans entered because it was “CAL” and they wanted to be in it, but didn’t think it through properly…like making sure they had enough players…or taking the time to familiarise themselves with rules etc. The world cup shouldn’t affect it too much because CAL is quiet flexible in arranging matches.

Unlike many of the top known sides who have rosters of 5 or 6 members, PUB currently has 12 members registered, do you think playing like this is better for the side or were you considering shortening your team?

Obviously it’s easier to maintain tactics and improve your team with a smaller squad, but we always approach the game with the attitude of “fun first..results second”…and including all our members in that. Tbh we would have liked to be able to enter all 20 of our squad into CAL.

PUB just finished the 3rd week of CAL, do you like the fact that all the teams skill levels are mixed up? Or would you prefer divisions like the US CAL- Leauge represented on skill?

I think long term CAL-E will improve as teams are more evenly matched on skill, but it is fun this season as you can come up against some very skilled clans you may not normally get to play. The main thing we are enjoying is getting to play teams from all over Europe, as we have been playing UK based teams almost exclusively.

Your next game is against Intesify ( Another UK Team ) on Cpl Fire, do you know the map well enough yet? or do you feel your aim will see you through?

We are familiar with the map, but not played it many times in competition. As for aim, this is a concept we hope to be implementing soon :p

Finally is there anything else that you would like to see or be introduced in CAL-E for the second season?

Mainly a stricter entry procedure to try and lower the amount of defaulted games. Otherwise all seems pretty good as it is.
