By: Mark Cheben - Published March 09, 2007 at 6:49 PM EST - Writer Archive
The Championship Gaming Series (CGS) will host its first qualifier of the 2007 season at the Buy.com LAN, from March 30 through April 1, 2007 in Anaheim, CA.
With details for the full 2007 program to be announced in the coming weeks, CGS is the most highly anticipated competitive gaming initiative in history. The Buy.com LAN 2007 event will serve as official qualifiers for PC events: Counter-Strike: Source, FIFA 07 and Xbox 360 events: Dead or Alive 4 and Project Gotham Racing 3.

Players and teams can register now at buy.com/lan. Entry to the event is $5 for a day pass or $10 for the weekend and the CGS qualifying tournaments are free to all attendees.

Staged at the Hyatt Regency in Anaheim, CA and centrally located to both Long Beach and John Wayne Airports, the event will host over 500 players battling to qualify for the CGS.

See buy.com/lan for official rules.

In addition to the qualifier, the event will include a shootout competition with exclusive CGS spokesman Fatal1ty and a BYOC area.

The prizes seem poor, but the teams that do get through do get a starting salary of $25k per year i think.

Hyper! col and 3d should feature strong in the source competition. Rsports (if they attend) will be pretty hot too

pretty sure col 3d hyper and efg already have auto berths, so they have no need to attend the source tourny at buy.com but should still come for the competition!

I would assume coL and EFG won't even attend, since they're already qualified for CGS from winning their CGI events.

You know, over the next few months and the series of CGS qualifiers, there's gonna be a huge amount of pressure, and some very heart-broken teams.

For the original Source teams, its their one chance to validate to themselves their choice of playing CS:S these last couple of years, through all the criticism and oppression.

And for the former 1.6 teams, there's even more pressure. It's make or break for them. If they should fail to qualify for CGS, then the whole point in switching to Source will have been a fool's errand from which they gained absolutely nothing.

This is a momentous time for Counter-Strike.

#6 for CS:S, the cash and lodging is per player on the qualifying teams. if your team qualifies, you get an auto-berth into the national event with most of your travel, if not all, covered. you have to be at the national finals event for a chance to get drafted onto one of six franchise teams.

other than cs:s, each of the other cgs titles will be multiple tournaments at Buy.com LAN where attendees can enter multiple times and across multiple games. this is your chance to qualify to get to the cgs national event.

All of this CGS stuff is coming on really quick, I'm wondering if any teams are actually out there taking this stuff seriously. Are any teams on the edge of getting into CGS out there busting thier butts every night working towards this dream?

Prizes for tournaments are pretty much worthless at this point (yeah they are nice) but all professional sports are a contracted league, not just praying for a few good tournaments/year. The moment of truth is basically upon all the teams on the edge. Time is running out and I wouldn't screw around with a rumored 1million prize for CGS (z.morriz?? anyone confirm?)

Hopefully these types of events will bring out the best in the teams that are seriously preparing, and those teams just trying to get a 750/person (~4k) prize pot once a year will be left in the dust.

Source is seriously on the right track right now, and its so very exciting to see all these new teams (EFG, Forbiddon, Hyper, 50cal, etc) forming.

Let the 1.6ers have thier 2500/person if they win 1st prize at this event. If CGS holds up, they will have to win 10 of those suckers per year just to match your garunteed paycheck.

Good luck to all the source teams (and 1.6 teams switching over) in the future. This is it guys, 2007 is our year.

Why no DSP500's allowed at the event? I've used DSP500's since CoD1, it's ridiculous that they won't allow me to use them because they have a built in soundcard?

Not to mention this announcement was late enough as is. People have 20 days now to sign up and get there, pretty ridiculous.

#28 we'll double check on the DSP500 rule. the concern there was that we were getting a lot of problems at previous events with DSP500's not being picked up by a number of tournament systems. the rule was for the player's benefit for future events so that they didn't show up at an event with their gear and find that their headsets don't work on the tournament systems. your equipment working at home is much different than when you have 10 minutes to set up right before a live match.

also, weren't you the one asking previously about not being over-looked because you haven't played competitevly for a while? here's your chance to show up, play, and earn an auto-berth. regardless of the late formal announcement, registration has been open for over a month and rumors were abound that this might be a CGS qualifier event. there are currently 34 teams signed up for the cs:s tournament so i think other participants kind of got that hint.

Well if the DSP500 issue is fixed then I'd be much happier with the event.

As for the qualifier being late, you have to understand that flight costs are 2x what they normally are right now, that's the only reason I'm upset about that.

And as for me being over-looked, at this point I don't think that's nearly as much of an issue, considering I've proven myself as still being a top player in the game.

Appreciate the response, though. Assuming you are an official of CGS/Buy.com

as much as we would like everyone from all over the country to come to the event, we know that it just doesn't make economic sense for everyone to attend. however, with the Buy.com LAN being the first formally announced CGS qualifier, if you are serious about being part of the CGS, you may not wanna miss this one as they will have a big presence at the event. lots of announcements should be coming out around the event.

also, as being part of the production team, i can assure you that Buy.com its sponsors, event partners, and the CGS has been working hard to make sure the first major LAN event of the year on the west coast is going to be one event that anyone attending will not forget. even if you don't win any tournaments, don't be surprised with what you could be walking out with from the event. i'll leave it at that...

one more thing, PNY has stepped up to host a 64 person Quake4 Deathmatch FFA tournament in their booth on Saturday which will be free for all Buy.com LAN attendees. http://ems.esportsea.com/buylan/?a=tourna.. Just make sure that you register and cofirm for any Buy.com LAN event ticket. PNY is putting up the following prizes:

1st: XLR8 8800GTS 640MB Graphics Card and XLR8 1066MHz 2GB (2 x 1GB) Memory Kit
2nd: XLR8 8800GTS 640MB Graphics Card
3rd: XLR8 1066MHz 2GB (2 x 1GB) Memory Kit

looking at the prizes, it seems like the only ones actually financially benefitting from the qualifiers are really the buy.com host. this is going to be exciting for me since this is in anaheim, where i currently reside. i'm guessing this is only one of a series of qualifiers? kind of like the wsvg series to see who goes to finals at the end of the year?

A player that ends up making a six figures a year in CGS will benefit much more from this qualifier than anyone else.

$350 PER PLAYER, not per team. I'm not debating if thats enough to cover travel expenses, but I'm simply clearing that up.
