Counter-Strike Source: CGS annouces Valve deal; signs 3D, coL

By: Mark Cheben - Published April 20, 2007 at 3:41 PM EDT - Writer Archive
The Championship Gaming Series has signed its first two teams and penned a deal with Valve for exclusive rights to Counter-Strike on TV.
The Championship Gaming Series has signed its first two teams, compLexity and Team 3D, to their league. In addition, multiple sources are indicating that CGS has entered into an exclusive agreement with Valve to show Counter-Strike on television. This marks the first time that Counter-Strike will be broadcast in both hemispheres and is the first truly global professional eSports league.

According to sources, CGS has entered into an exclusive agreement to show Counter-Strike on TV in North America, the UK, Europe, and Latin America. Coverage will also be in Asia and Australia on a non exclusive basis. This move adds a staple eSports title permanently to CGS's game lineup, but begs the question as to what will happen to companies that broadcast Counter-Strike matches – other than CGS.

In another major move, CGS has made the first step towards assembling their six North American franchises by signing exclusive deals with compLexity and Team 3D. By doing, so CGS has added two of the top eSport organizations to the league and created a solid base to expand on in the future. 3D and compLexity will be joined by four new CGS-created franchises in the US and many more internationally; each franchise will contain one full CS:S team, 2 PGR3 players, 1 FIFA07 player and 2 DoA4 players (one male and one female). CGS will be keeping coL and 3D's CS teams intact but if they are able to retain their DoA4 players, MASTER of 3D and Offbeat Ninja of coL, is yet to be determined. The amount of compensation has not been disclosed.

Craig Levine, the manager of Team 3D, expressed excitement about joining the league as a founding franchise.

“After playing nearly 1,000 competitive matches as an independent team in more than 100 tournaments worldwide during the last years, Team 3D has now entered into a long-term exclusive agreement to become an official Championship Gaming Series team,” said Levine. “We’re excited to become one of the league’s founding franchises and help build an unparalleled sports entertainment experience. CGS is dedicated to the principle of treating the games as sports and the gamers as athletes and everyone connected to the league is the best in the business.”

Jason Lake, the owner of compLexity, echoed similar feelings and invited the fans of his team to join them as they revolutionize professional gaming.

“We invite the coL Community along for what promises to be an incredible journey,” said Lake. “Join us as we work with CGS to revolutionize professional gaming and bring e-sports into the mainstream. You will have a front row seat to the action as CGS releases more gaming coverage than ever before. Come along as we draft a new generation of compLexity squads (to join coL.cs) and train them to be champions.”

The additional members of the franchise teams will be drafted by the teams’ General Managers after the Regional Combine, which will take place in June. The teams and players that earned a qualifying spot at Buy.com secured a spot in this scouting event. It should be noted that CGS will be drafting Counter-Strike teams as five-player units and not creating them from scratch.

More information about CGS can be found at their new website http://www.thecgs.com/.

I know cg113 i almost jumped out of my chair is happiness about this...it does not say counter-strike : Source is says Counter-Strike. Really i dont know why they are using source or i would have told the whole community by now what we need to do is let the league know how we feel. What also has crossed my mind is the fact that they could just make a spectator mod of 1.6 for their broadcast's

doesnt change the fact that source is awful, gl coL and 3D

okay the reason valve wouldnt let cgs broadcast 1.6 is because valves sponsors did not approve of it... 1.6 can be run on any computer, but source calls for upgrades, which in turn brings in money for the sponsors... this is also the reason that col and 3d switched to source is for the direct tv contracts.. 25,000 per season per player... sellouts

#23.... lol i would have done the same thing dont get it twizted... that doesnt change the fact that it was lame of them to become source whores. oh and im 18, gg

#21, you think the people that watch competitive gaming don't play other new games that are as much if not more demanding than source? ridiculous logic. if you're advertising at a competitive gaming event then you're advertising to the right crowd, no matter what main game is being played.

#21 if you call getting paid 25,000 a year a sellout you would have to be crazy. During this time they could easily be in graduate school about to get a job with a starting salary of 60-90.000 dollars. I feel sorry that they are only getting paid 25k a year. I will also assume when they say exclusive deals that this will be the ONLY profit for them outside of being payed by compLexity. No other tournaments, just CGS. Grow up please.

They should go ahead and use that Warden battle cry as the face of Counter-Strike, since GotFrag is so fond of airing it.

The way it's shaping up, it'll be one hell of a boring show to watch. They're just dissing everything eSports holds dear (like actual competition) just for business. If e.g. Mr. Lake truly wants to promote eSports - then promote what it was, not some commercially twisted version of it. I mean, did chess introduce explosions or time limits to become a household name?

#28 I bet that people in the Dark Age had pretty similar slogans (just replace christianity with Counter-Strike and it's pretty identical).
But it's my only line!
