Counter-Strike Source: verGe.css comes to a close

The Counter-Strike: Source team of Verge Gaming has disbanded.
After two members of verGe Gaming's Counter-Strike: Source team (Griff and Devour) joined up with Heroic, the future of the team was in question as it had multiple holes to fill if it was to continue on. Verge had recently placed third in the CEVO playoffs as well as finished fourth in the Buy CGS qualifer, but earlier today, manager Matt Marcou announced that the Source team has officially disbanded.

GotFrag asked Marcou whether this decision came after two of his players joined Heroic and he replied, "Sam and Grant's decision to leave was actually based on my discussion with them to close the CSS division. We came to a mutual conclusion last night." When asked about creating a new team in the future, Marcou replied with, "No, Verge Gaming will be moving away completely from Source. It is a possibility that we would reconsider upon the conclusion of this year's CGS season or when we feel that a small private team could succeed in the industry."

The official statement from the Verge website can be found below:

As our ever evolving community prepares for the next stage of professional eSports, Verge Gaming says goodbye to the past. As of today, Verge Gaming LLC will be closing its Counter-strike: Source division.

A bright future is upon the Counter-strike: Source community; however, in this future it is increasingly difficult for small private entrepreneurs to follow the mold that made eSports franchises “successful” in the past. This is especially true for franchises in America like Verge Gaming LLC. Verge Gaming recognizes that it does not have the appropriate resources to move forward as an organization with an emphasis on Counter-strike: Source. In order to thrive as a business, changes in our operations and business model are necessary. The company will be scaling back its eSports divisions and reevaluating its position in the industry over the coming year as the industry evolves.

The next generation of eSports franchises, such as those created by the Championship Gaming Series (CGS), are much better equipped to create an organized structure for competitive players as Verge Gaming has done in the past. Professional gamers and gamers with aspirations to become professional are in a much better position to fulfill their goals because of organizations like CGS. Verge Gaming embraces the change that has come about in the industry due to CGS, but we must adapt with those changes.

“It is a somber, yet necessary step that we take today as an organization.” says Matt Marcou, Founder and President of Verge Gaming LLC, “All players currently rostered by verGe.css have been released and some have already found a new home for their careers. The organization would like to wish them all the best as they continue their careers. Verge Gaming will continue to support the efforts of our Dead or Alive and DotA divisions though the 2007 year. We will also represent our sponsors and supporters to our best ability.”

The organization would like to thank our many fans that have cheered for verGe.css over the past 2 years. Without your support our accomplishments would not have meant nearly as much. Also, a great thanks goes out to all of the players, who have represented the team and whose contributions & sacrifices were absolutely essentially to the organization. Above all, the organization recognizes Jon “juan” Mumm, who was the cornerstone for the team’s efforts for nearly 2 years before his departure.

Former verGe.css rostered players:

Jon “juan” Mumm (2005-2007)
Kyle “BFW” Lepkowski (2005)
Dave “dave-o” Manske (2005)
Craig “OC” O’Connor (2005)
Kris “Heyden” Heyden (2005)

Andrew “Drew” Morehead (2007)
Sam “Devour” Chamma (2007)
