Counter-Strike Source: CEVO modifies rules for Pro division

By: Calvin Lin - Published May 10, 2007 at 8:05 PM EDT - Writer Archive
CEVO adopts the CGS rules for Season 4 of the CS:Source Professional division.
On Tuesday, CEVO announced modifications to its match rule set for the upcoming season of Counter-Strike: Source. CEVO has decided to adopt the unique rules of the Championship Gaming Series for its Professional division. With the CGS approaching this summer, many teams have shifted their focus to playing under the CGS rules.

The fourth season of CEVO Counter-Strike: Source Professional is scheduled to begin this month, as the placement tournament to determine which teams will make up the Pro division will start on May 20th. Below is the news release from the CEVO website:

Following the recent shift to a non-traditional style of play, CEVO has decided to adjust rules to reflect that change. Identical to the now commonly played CGS format, the CEVO-Professional rule changes are as follows:

* 1:20 Round Time
* $16,000 Start Money
* 1 round, sudden death overtime (subject to change during the regular season)
* 9 Rounds Per Half
* First team to win 10 rounds, wins the match

Due to the CEVO-Professional rule changes, the CEVO-Professional Placement Tournament will reflect the same changes.

Good call. All the CS:S teams are practicing these rules, so it's only logical.

The only logical choice - although I am sure CEVO will have many critics on this decision.

Logical but still doesn't change the fact that these rules are beyond horrible and destroy gameplay.

As much as I enjoy CGS's style of fast play, I don't think it deserves a spot in CEVO-P. CEVO-P are the best of the best.. it's truely why they call it Professional.

CGS matches aren't as fun to watch.. since it does indeed take out many aspects of the game.

How is this logical or smart? The cgs rules are not ment for the gaymers or gameplay.. they are ment for tv viewers. If cevo was going to be on tv then maybe this would be logical but since it is not and the only people that will be watching the matches are gaymers who enjoy the REAL rules this is a STUPID move! Very logical to take away the rules and gameplay that the gaymers love and the casual gaymers love to watch..... Prove me wrong plz

Watch cevo go back to old rules after they realize it was a mistake
the quality of the ruleset is equivalent to the quality of the game

CGS dictates where a CGS franchise can play or not. If CEVO uses the CGS rules its obvious who they are going to choose. Would bring new viewers to the league.

Why didn't CGS just pick up quake 3 or 4? They are looking for some fast pace shooter to fill in a 30 minute slot on tv. This doesn't feel like competitive cs anymore. How can you say that this is progressing esports when all valve, cgs, and now cevo have done is dumbed down CS and ruin the game we love?

Its all about the money now. Way to kick the community in the teeth.

Think its the right move to do, at least for the players, as the pros are currently most concerned with qualifying for CGS and thus letting them have the chance to practice the rules is good. May not be the best for spectators, but for the players its the best call (also best for players is not forcing these rules on the non-pro divisions). Only thing I'd change is to not use the CGS OT system as that is just ridiculously lop-sided, would replace it with 1 round(both sides) OTs, keep going until one team wins both sides in a round.

I do hope they will go back to the regular style of play after CGS teams are locked in so teams main focus is not qualifying for it. Would suck if cevo permanently changed to CGS rules leaving CAL being the only big league with the old rule pro games (especially considering most of the big pro teams don't actually play in it).

You guys do realize that CAL-Invite has gone to a hybrid of the CGS config right? Basically it's CGS setup with 30 rounds and the standard CAL overtime config. So the games aren't quite as short as CGS is made for TV.

I wish they would go back to the days when CO was the style of play... Why not consider adopting a charges only style format? By setting a time limit it will still fit into a timed slot, will still keep strategy if not more then the format we are used to, and will still be interesting.

No it should be 18 short rounds with cal money. Pistol and save is important, but the 9 round halfs would mean a team that crushes the other team first round has a better chance of winning.

10 rounds to win, 9 round halves.......... no pistol round, i doubt anyone would have to eco the entire 9 rounds thanks to no ammo purchasing...

Thank you, CEVO.

Although I somewhat agree with p0s. That's what CAL-I is doing now.

But this is definitely for the best. It's important to have everyone playing the same at least relatively similar format, because continually having to adjust back and forth would just make results random.

Whether you like the CGS rules or not, for the pro-level CGS is what's most important, and so the CGS rules are what we should be playing. Simple.

Only 4 more teams going into CGS.

How many teams will really care about the CGS rule set after that?

Will the 6 teams in CGS play CEVO ? Doubt it.

#42 Yeah, okay. Just call me dumb without actually attempting to counter my point.

You know, because you obviously can't. What with my point being simple, self-evident common sense and all.

#45 There should be opportunities for new teams and players to get drafted into the CGS in between each season of play. So there's your reason for why teams at the top-level will still be interested in the CGS rule set after this first season's cut.

Over the years CS has evolved from many different rule sets to try and find the perfect balance between a fair match and something that is entertaining to watch. I think it has been pretty close however CEVO did have longer round times than others so it would seem they wanted to give the players more time to try and win rounds.

It seems odd they would go to a system that is only geared for entertainment. I guess no one liked the CO rules that seems to fit a bit better IMO.
Its a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake.
