Counter-Strike Source: Turmoil upsets the OPTX

In an impressive display, Turmoil beat the San Francisco Optx 16-14 to take their first round match in the Digital Life 2007 GGL Tournament.

At the Digital Life 2007 Pro-Am Tournament, Turmoil took down the San Francisco Optx in their first round match on train. This was due in large part to a very strong first half by Turmoil. It started out rough, as Optx took the opening pistol round on offense, with Ryan Pham getting a quick 4 frags to dominate the round. Turmoil was able to settle down and take the first half 11-4, thanks to the excellent AWP work of Sam "devour" Chamma, who joined the team for this tournament. Devour worked himself a three frags in the fourth round, as well as an uncommon double frag in the 13th.

Steven "sasquatcH" Csikos noted the difference between devour and their usual primary AWPer, Gary "Funshine" Laurita: "Funshine is more of a defensive AWP, while devour is more like an aggressive, terrorist AWP." Devour has worked with Turmoil before, most recently in the CSA Open.

In the second half, Optx roared back to take the first six rounds. When asked about his team's strategy, Yazan "clowN" Ammari said, "We started playing a lot more passively, peeking a lot of corners, letting them come to us, and it worked out really well."

Turmoil was able to come back and take the middle portion of the match, despite the best efforts of the Optx, including Trevor "p0s" Randolph and his three frags in round 19. SasquatcH explained his team's adjustment: "We weren't able to go inner, so we started spreading out and hitting outer, and it proved to be really successful."

Devour also noted the Optx strategy: "We saw that they were stacking the inner (site) a lot, so we started changing our strategy and going after outer."

Optx made it 14-12 in round 26, when Laurent "Warmach1ne" Keoula won a crucial 1v1 with the bomb ticking down in outside site. Optx proceeded to follow that up with a team ace, and looked to be close to tying up the match. But Warmach1ne lost a 1v1 in the 28th round to give Turmoil their 15th round, and Turmoil was able to clinch it in the 30th round on a bomb plant in outer site, sealing the match for them.

Sasquatch had nothing but respect for the Optx after the match, saying, "We feel like we match up better against (potential opponent) 3DNY than we do against Optx." Devour was the same way, stating that he "would probably rank them number 2 or 3 of all the teams" at the tournament.

When asked about any adjustments his team would make now that they were in the Lower Bracket, clowN said, "Actually, I think it helps us. Some people think that we're God, that we don't need to practice that much, so I think it's a big wakeup call that we need to step up our game."
