Counter-Strike Source: 3D downed in overtime

Coming in as the sixth seed, Turmoil has once again pulled off an upset to move into the Upper Bracket Finals at Digitallife.

While Turmoil has been on a roll lately, placing second at CPL and first in the XFX inter-LAN center tournament, they haven't really received much attention. This has more to do with the fact that they hadn't proven themselves against any of the CGS teams. Entering digitalLife with the number six seed, their tournament future rested in their ability to beat those teams.

They got off to a great start, edging out the San Francisco Optx 16-14 on train. You can read the review of that match Here. That win advanced them to the semifinals, where they would face another strong CGS team, 3D.NY on inferno. Ironically, these two teams have only played each other once in the past. Two weeks ago in CEVO, they played inferno, where 3D completely rolled turmoil, winning the first half 9-0 and eventually winning 14-4.

The match started off with 3D on defense. The match looked completely one sided, with 3D taking the first half 12-3. Rector really stood out for the team, as he was consistantly able to hold the covered site off, getting 2-3 entries when turmoil attacked there. He also played a solid rotational game, picking what seemed to be the perfect time to rotate whenever they went banana. On one occasion, he was able to clutch a round by chasing down two players in banana after they tried to fall back to the covered site. More of the first half had to do with the poor play of turmoil, rather than anything overly outstanding coming from 3D.

"Our pistol round was really bad on T side. We didn't get any entry frags. On both the eco rounds we got really owned. Our main goal on T side was to split their defense in half, which we were usually able to do. But once we did that, we were never really able to regroup, and their site retakes were really good. They ended up shooting us in the back half the time. Also we lost a lot of 2 v 2's and were unlucky in that respect." - Stephen "sasquatcH" Csikos

After a dismal firsh half, it looked like 3D was poised to run away with this. Work had already begun on a preview for the Upper Finals match between 3D and coL. However, it seemed like the fat woman would just not sing for 3D. After Turmoil jumped out to an eight round lead, I stopped working on the 3D/coL preview. 3D seemed stuck in their ways, only using the banana site as a spot to end eco rushes. They forced the issue, trying to work the covered site repeatedly. On several occasions, they were able to work into the site, only to be fragged out by one of the site players who had positioned themselves to come up big.

"I think we got too caught up with trying to take the harder site on the map, which is the right side of the covered site. We lost a lot of rounds by just getting picked off. In the rounds that we had chances, they weren't very good, and were few and far between." - Dave "moto" Geffon

3D ended up finding themselves in a desperate situation. Down 15-14, they were forced to win the last round to push it to overtime. Rector answered the call, picking up the final frag to win the 2 v 1.

"CT side we played really well. The rounds we won weren't even close - we would only lose one or two players on those rounds. It helped us a lot to take the first eight rounds, although because of the multiplier, they were usually able to buy up." - Stephen "sasquatcH" Csikos

The first overtime was a real rollercoaster. Both teams had their share of the momentum on their defensive half. The first two rounds came down to 1 v 1's which 3D both took. In the first, devour was taken out by a jumping ksharp, as he was hiding behind the truck in big pit.

"The first OT half on our T side, we should have definitely won a few rounds. We lost 2 1 v 1's with KSharp hitting some crazy jumping headshot on devour who had good positioning on him." - Stephen "sasquatcH" Csikos

After losing the last round of the first overtime, 3D looked really downtrodden to have to keep playing. Their lowered moral may very well have been the difference, as they entered the second overtime looking down and uninspired.

"During OT I was indifferent and upset about the position we were in. But that is just the way CS is sometimes - you just have to deal with it and do the best you can." - Dave "moto" Geffon

Turmoil went on to take the final overtime 4-2, ending the match after a slew of ups and downs at 22-20.

"Coming into the match I knew we had what it took to win. I was really disappointed when we didn't take the match in regulation because I really think we could have won that last round. As a team we feel that we can match up against any of the CGS teams." - Stephen "sasquatcH" Csikos

As far as 3D is concerned, team manager Geffon looked unfazed by the loss. With his team set to play Hyper in order to advance to the lower bracket finals, I asked him what the keys to winning were.

"We need to go with what we know - use the strats that we already have and play smart, without making stupid mistakes. I do my best to help the team during events, but I don't interfere. I let them show what they have learned and know. When we are home and working on things, I have no problem interjecting my thoughts into their practices." - Dave "moto" Geffon

Turmoil are impressive. I haven't really payed much attention but how is devour doing? He's a good player and I'm wondering if he's the reason turmoil are doing well?

#4 I don't think there are many times when Devour does badly, honestly. He's the model of consistent play.

As for 3D, I just don't even know what to think of this team anymore. Maybe they really just need a team re-work, because other than the CGS Combine results, they've been horribly inconsistent. More so than they were prior to Source, even.

#5 what do you mean " model of consistent play" like if you play to much your skill and aim drops? If thats what your saying then that doesn't make sense to me.

#6 wtf? Consistency in any game means always having a good game, or at least, having a good game most of the time. That's part of what is good about Devour, he plays extremely smart, and he almost never gets picked without taking down a player in the process. That's what I mean by consistent, it has absolutely nothing to do with dropping skill level by playing too much, holy God. If you watch him in matches, even in the matches where his team loses, he's almost always pulling in frags for his team. Very few players are 100% consistent in their gameplay.
