Counter-Strike Source: Turmoil dodges bullet in Newegg group

After struggling to end their first match with a tie, Turmoil looked a bit uneasy entering the Newegg LANfest2k7 CSS tournament.

After their great performance last weekend at digitallife, Turmoil was finally given some credit. They were on a run, placing second at the summer CPL, and winning the XFX tournament. However, since neither of those events featured CGS teams, Turmoil's wins were bittersweet. After beating all of the CGS teams they faced at the event, with the exception of coL, Turmoil finally got some of the praise they were due.

They definitely entered this event with a chip on their shoulders. Finally, people expected good things out of them, and a top three placing was something that seemed entirely feasible for them. But after their first round match against vANSKAP! people were beginning to wonder if someone had blow out Turmoils pilot light.

"We went into the match extremely overconfident. We let them call the coin toss, we let them pick the side, we basically gave them no credit at all. Our CT side, we opened with a great first round where we team aced. We started adding up rounds, and ended the half 8-4. We had some problems with nmE over rotating out of B and then having them end up walking in and planting. B is really hard to retake in Source, so that helped them get some rounds. We can't really blame him because this is his first tournament in about 6 months." - Steve "sasquatcH" Csikos

Starting off 8-4 on the defensive side of dust2 is usually a very good sign that your team is working well together. With offense generally being the easier of the two sides, heading into the second half with that sort of lead often gives teams extra momentum and helps them keep loose. This was not the case for turmoil.

"After we switched, we started off weak, losing the first three rounds. After we got on board, they just started pushing catwalk and middle every round, and just doing the dumbest things. They would push all the way to the tree and catch us off guard. They were not doing anything that made sense. Ultimately, we got the four rounds we needed to force the tie." - Steve "sasquatcH" Csikos

After losing so many consecutive rounds, and feeling the match slipping out of their control, Turmoil seemed complacent with ending on a tie. With vANSKAP! seemingly making perfect decisions on defense, it had turmoil really puzzled.

"It seemed like they knew what we were doing every round. They definitely did a lot of antistrating beforehand." - Steve "sasquatcH" Csikos

Whether vANSKAP! was lucky in their setups and pushes, or they watched some demos or spoke to some teams who have played turmoil in the past, is irrelevant. You really can't blame a team for going that extra step and trying to get a perfectly legal edge. Teams need to be more flexible when they feel their opponents have done their homework.

After the scare, Turmoil went on to cruise through the rest of their group.

"The last two matches, we really locked it down and played our game. I don't think we were fully warmed up going into our first round match." Rich "sauce" Cannon

"Yea, we sucked." adds sasquatcH

With an early scare, the question of the impact which devour had on the team is an obvious topic of discussion. With his stellar play at digitallife, it seems that Turmoil might not be the same team without him. Using a fifth who hasn't played a LAN in 6 months is certainly a big risk.

"We don't really have a fifth right now. With devour playing with his team, we used nmE, who is still pretty fresh. We haven't fully incorporated him into the team. He is a really good player, but our schedules don't really match up that well so it is hard to practice. But we are really confident with our core of players, especially because we all have the drive to continue to work hard and get better. We are all able to take constructive criticism without getting defensive, so that helps keep things positive." - Steve "sasquatcH" Csikos

Being the first group to play has hopefully given Turmoil plenty of time to work out the kinks in their game. While I am not sure if they have computers in the BYOC, a little bit of conversation can often work wonders.
