Should Andrew "reCTOOOR" Rector take all the heat for 3D's inability to win a tournament? ![]() “I could pick up three guys off the street and play with you and them and get more than 1 round against the Chimera.” That is what GotFragTV caster Trevor “Midway” Schmidt had to say after New York 3D was absolutely stunned by the Chicago Chimera in a 13-1 match on de_nuke. Most fans felt the same way—3D had shown up at another tournament and fallen flat. But then something odd happened—3D woke up and battled their way past the Carolina Core and Pandemic to secure a top 3 finish. In the consolation final, they put up a tough fight, but it wasn’t quite enough to bring down the lately unbeatable LA compLexity. After losing 13-10 to coL, the fans on the GotFrag forums immediately called for Andrew “reCTOOOR” Rector’s head on a plate. One thread came right out and said it in the title: “cut andy rector please.” While reading the back and forth arguments about whether Rector should be cut, I wondered if he really was underperforming compared to the rest of the team or if he was just catching heat for not being as big of a celebrity as the other members of the roster. I went to the GameSense stats for the entire roster of 3D in the two most relevant events: CGS North American Season 1 and CEVO Professional Season 4. (Please note that GotFrag has not received logs for 2 weeks of CGS Season 1 matches from the CGS, these stats are as complete as possible) The results may surprise you:
The first observation you should make is that Rector does indeed have the worst ratio and worst frags per round. However, you should also notice that Rector and Mikey “Method” So have nearly identical stats--Method barely has better stats than Rector over the course of the CGS and CEVO seasons. Another statistic to heed is that Rector leads the team in assists, which contributes to his negative frag/death ratio greatly. If he had converted half of those assists into kills, he’d easily beat Method in every category. It wouldn’t be fair to call Rector the “weak link” when Method has proven to be just as weak over the past few months. To get to the heart of 3D's problems, you need to look at the stats of the team that knocked them out of the tournament: LA compLexity.
Over the course of the CGS and CEVO seasons, every single member of coL maintained a positive kill/death ratio. fRoD led all players in frags, frags per round, and damage per round. However, this is by no means a one man team. You can see that zet and Rambo also did more damage on average than any member of 3D.NY, including Ksharp! Purely based on the stats, coL has 4 above average players and Warden, who we all know serves the team well. On the other hand, 3D has 3 above average players and 2 statistically sub-par players. If 3D wants a shot at compLexity in CSS, they need to rethink more than just Rector. Mikey "method" So is getting away with the same sub-par play as Rector without any of the criticism. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
