Counter-Strike Source: coL prevails at Newegg

Tournament favorites LA compLexity have won the Newegg LANFest2k7 event over the San Fransisco OPTX, just not as easily as many would have thought.
Coming off a strong showing at Digitallife, compLexity was the clear cut favorite to win the Newegg LANFest. With the OPTX's downright atrocious play in New York, few people had predicted them to play so strong.

"At Digitallife, we didn't prepare at all. We really thought that we could get by using out CGS strats there. In CGS, it is a lot easier to try and mount a comeback when you find yourself down in a match. With $800 start money, once you start losing, you can't build a comeback because you have to save. After we lost to Turmoil, we just couldn't focus. We just got rolled after that." - Trevor "p0s" Randolph

Meeting first in the upper bracket finals on train, the OPTX seized control early. They lost their grip though, and allowed coL to work their way back into the match. After three overtimes, the OPTX finally were able to seal the deal, and shock coL into the consolation match.

"We knew that train was one of their weaker maps, so we went in expecting to do well. We took the momentum early on, and held onto it for a while. They eventually caught up, sending the match to overtime. Once overtime started, we got on a roll and finished them off." - Trevor "p0s" Randolph

After taking out 3D in a well fought match, compLexity found themselves with a chance for revenge. They would have to be perfect though, as the OPTX only need to win one map to be crowned champions.

"Our weakest map is without a doubt train. When we lost in triple overtime, I knew that we were the better team. If we hadn't made some of the mistakes we did, that match could have easily gone in our favor. We have played the OPTX so many times now, and had so much success against them, that we went into the finals matches with no fear whatsoever. We were very confident that we could pull out the win." - Ron "Rambo" Kim

Entering the first match on dust2, both teams looked poised to win. After a veritable seesaw of rounds, compLexity was finally able to snatch the momentum and keep it.

Dust2 is definitely the OPTX's best map. We had a really close match, with so many rounds that could have gone either way. We went back to the fundamentals and found a spot we could exploit on T side. We hit cat and there was nothing they could do to stop it, so I just kept calling it." - Ron "Rambo" Kim

"In the dust2 match, we changed our style up. Since we were getting behind in the rounds, it forced us to play more cautiously. We normally play very aggressive, so when we switched to playing passive, it hurt us even more." - Trevor "p0s" Randolph

"I was a little worried that we were going to stay flat. But in the dust2 match with the OPTX, I saw Danny light up. He hit like five or six shots in a row. At that point I knew it was over." - Jason Lake

With both teams now having a loss, they headed into the final map, Inferno. Starting off with a ton of momentum, compLexity took immediate control of the match. They had the OPTX on the ropes, and it wasn't before long that they ended up winning, with a score of 13-6.

Going into the Inferno match, we had a lot of momentum. We could tell that they were getting worn down. They were starting to get really quiet, and never were able to get over that hump. We played really aggressive and tried to have fun and enjoy the match." - Ron "Rambo" Kim

"We struggled on Inferno, and we kept trying to switch things up to try and make something work. That dug us into an even deeper hole, and we couldn't get out. We also got really quiet. Being loud is a big part of our team game. When we are loud, it tends to bother the other team and it helps us pile up the momentum." - Trevor "p0s" Randolph

After the match, coL looked relieved and excited. After a long day of CS, working off limited sleep from the night matches before, they were able to put the pieces back together and fight off the advances of a very impressive OPTX team.

"The guys were able to come back and play their own game. I think that is what really defines a champion; someone who can pull themselves back up after a loss like that. I am extremely proud of them." - Jason Lake

"This is compLexity. This is what we do. The entire lineup was designed to win matches especially in high pressure situations." - Ron "Rambo" Kim

With coL meeting the expectations of their fans, and the OPTX having an amazing tournament, both should be proud of themselves. Everyone counting the OPTX out before they even had a chance to play was too fast an assumption, because it is impressive that they were able to put their past troubles behind them, and focus on the task in front of them.

The reason why they went two and out at Digitallife was definitely the rule set. They weren't used to the old rules. Pistol rounds and money management make you rely much more on teamwork. If you let them start with AWPs, they are extremely dangerous." - Ron "Rambo" Kim

The question on everyone's minds is what's next for these teams? Since the CGS is currently not allowing their teams to participate in the CPL winter event, most teams have some time off. For compLexity, however, they can't afford to relax just yet, as they have the CGS playoffs to look forward to.
