Season 5 of CEVO Pro CS:Source gets underway this week with some new additions to the division. All the CGS teams are back along with newcomer Mexico Furia. GotFrag takes a look at the teams competing in North America's premier online Counter Strike League. During season 1 of CGS Region 1, New York 3D played to a mediocre 5-6-1 record, with their only tie being an epic double-overtime franchise victory over eventual World Champions, Chicago. This record is somewhat notable because New York is the only team in CGS to technically have a tie score (in CGS' point system, while 3D achieved a 1-point franchise victory, the CSS score was 10-10, a tie.). After CGS, New York continued its mediocrity in CEVO, going 5-6 for a 9th place finish, just behind the San Francisco Optx. Their LAN results were an improvement, however. At Digital Life 2007 in New York, they placed 4th, behind LA, Turmoil, and Pandemic, and at Newegg Lanfest, they placed 3rd, behind LA and San Francisco. With most of the CGS teams, it has been quiet since then, but 3DNY has always been LA's biggest rival, so don't dismiss them yet. Strengths When all five of the 3DNY Source players are on top of their game, they're practically unstoppable. Sal "Volcano" Garozzo is a fine in-game leader, and Kyle "KSharp" Miller has been a top-3 AWPer, ever since the days of CS 1.3. Add to that the fine play of Jimmy Lin, Mikey "method" So, and Andrew Rector, and this is a five-man team that will roll most everyone, any given day. Behind the scenes is their General Manager and former teammate, Dave "moto" Geffon. He brings a world of experience, and a calming influence to this team, increasing its already potent play. Weaknesses New York, like most of the CGS teams, suffers from lack of play. They didn't attend Winter CPL, and haven't really been in a "must win now" mindset since Newegg. It's more than just bearing down and playing better; the intangibles that come in that mindset must be there. A second, and more glaring weakness, lies in the players themselves. As was written, when the five of them are on, they're practically unstoppable. The weakness lies in getting all five of them on fire, at the same time. Despite their natural talent and loads of experience, New York is still one of the streakier teams in the game, and that, combined with their lapses in mental toughness, make a difficult situation for them, if the other team keeps committing to a site because they know that the 3D players there aren't on their A game. Recent Accomplishments: 4th Place, CGS CSS Region 1 (5-6-1); 9th Place, CEVO-P Season 4 (5-6); 4th Place, Digital Life 2007; 3rd Place, Newegg Lanfest 2k7 ![]() Carolina Core
Carolina Core fans must be beside themselves at this point in the Core's life. As a franchise, Carolina lost the Region 1 Finals to Chicago by ONE POINT. Then, despite the impressive run by their Source team, they were unable to exact revenge on Chicago in the World Finals, losing 27-15. In between, they scored a 5th Place finish last season to make the playoffs, but lost their final 3 games to just barely squeak by, and were subsequently knocked out of contention by LA and Gravitas. Some could cry "conspiracy" or "bad luck" at the way Carolina's chances just seem to fizzle out. But every day is a new day, and Core are looking ahead to this newest CEVO season. Strengths: Carolina boasts one of the more balanced and battle-tested lineups in the game. Sam "devour" Chamma is still an amazing offensive AWPer, and team captain Mark Torrez, as well as Adam "elusive" Messner, are plus rifles. Carolina has earned their accomplishments through loads of hard work. They escaped Group Play at Newegg Lanfest, beating Pandemic, and United 5 in an epic Double Overtime win. They took LA to Overtime in last season's CEVO playoffs before being knocked to the lower bracket. They showed the fruits of their labor at the CGS World Finals, beating every team they faced in CSS. They've taken their lumps together, and are stronger and closer because of it. Weaknesses: On paper, despite their balance, Carolina as a whole may be weaker than other teams. After devour, there doesn't really seem to be anyone who can go toe-to-toe with a single player on another team. Frustration is also a factor, as it seemed that despite their best efforts, Carolina was unable to capitalize on other teams mistakes, though one could point a finger at the non-CSS players for their World Finals loss. Carolina also seems to lack the ability to make that final, proverbial push when they're on a roll. When they're on, they can keep up with more dominant teams, but they also seem rather streaky, and are just as capable of dropping 3 games (as they did to end last regular season), as they are of winning 3 games. Recent Accomplishments: 5th Place, CGS Region 1 CSS (5-7); 2nd Place, CGS Region 1 Finals; 2nd Place, CGS World Finals; 5th Place, CEVO-P Season 4 (6-5), 5th/6th Place, CEVO/NationVoice Playoffs, 5th/6th Place, Newegg Lanfest 2k7. |
