Counter-Strike Source: Eximius Sports Back in Action

By: Justin Chichester - Published June 17, 2009 at 9:40 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Brad Dick sits down with GotFrag to discuss Eximius Sports.
GotFrag.com - After a very long break and a recent comeback to the scene, Brad Dick and Eximius Sports are back on the prowl.

A little background of what happened:

Eximius Sports closed its doors when Brad Dick went to pursue the Assistant General Manager position with the Chicago Chimera, a CGS branded team, and was given the opportunity to pursue the General Manager position while the active GM, Brian Flander, was looking to pursue his old job. When the Championship Gaming Series closed its doors, many were left with disappointment -- including Brad, who was next in line to becoming a GM for a CGS franchise. When Brad found out about the CGS shutting down, he lost hope and was ready to step away from the eSports scene. Brad Dick, however, decided to continue his run with eSports under a newly established name. The organization was to be called Culmination. For those of you who missed the many posts and ustream videos by Brad, this was his quote during his promotion of Culmination:

"If Eximius made a dent in e-sports then Culmination is going to make a crater."

Culmination was going to be geared mostly towards console gaming, with the exception of WoW and DOTA. With fresh sponsors, plenty of hype, and a new website underway, things looked promising for Brad and his new organization. It has been an interesting turn of events, however, as the man behind it has been kind enough to participate in an interview detailing the rise and fall of Culmination, his decision to bring back Eximius Sports, and what we can expect from the team in the future.

Now for the interview:

To start this off, I would like to say thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down with us for this interview. When the CGS closed its doors, you were about to step away from E-Sports as a whole. Instead you decided to create a new organization, Culmination. What happened with the Culmination idea that made you decide to re-open Eximius Sports?

Well first off, I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to do this interview with GotFrag. It is always a pleasure to give back to our fans and sites that help try to push North American eSports. In terms of eSports, I was looking to walk away completely; then Mark Dolven asked me to help him and Dave Geffon with QPAD.USA. I agreed and decided to help get the brand going. Ever since then I have been working hand in hand with Mark trying to market our products and come up with new ideas for QPAD.USA. Mark and I have some exciting things coming up in the near future, so stay tuned!

Now, about Eximius Sports instead of Culmination eSports; it was odd. I had a talk with the owner of Pandemic, Chris Lemley. I told him that I was opening a new brand with a new name. Chris asked me, “Brad why?! You have already established the Eximius Sports name.” I began to ponder that for a month or so, and I again had a sit down conversation, but this time with my brother Mike. Mike was starting to work on the new Culmination site, and he says to me, “Brad why are you really making this new name? You have ten years of history in Eximius Sports with numerous achievements in various games.” So, again it got me pondering why I am doing it. The icing on the cake was when I came across a sponsor that asked me the same thing that my brother did, and I came to the conclusion that I needed to stay with Eximius name. I have had many of the Eximius Sports fans come out and say they are happier that I kept the name as well too. Thank you for that guys!

With Culmination out of the picture and your focus back on Eximius Sports, we at GotFrag are curious -- what new sponsors can we expect to see behind Eximius Sports?

Well, I have to save that question for a later date. I have picked up quite a few sponsors over the past seven months of working on Culmination and Eximius Sports. We are always looking for more though. In this industry you can never have enough support. I am sure most will agree with me on that. We expect to release sponsorship information with the release of our new site coming around June 21st. So stay tuned for more information!

With backing like that, what can we expect from Eximius Sports? Will you be heading into the console scene or will the organization continue to stick with PC gaming?

Well, I hope to enter both if I can. Console is a big industry right now with Major League Gaming. But, I also know that with entering the MLG scene there are many politics with teams recognizing different organizations at events, so we will see. As for the PC division, everyone knows that this is my bread and butter. I hope to be picking up Counter-Strike 1.6, but as of now, we believe we have a solid Left 4 Dead & Counter-Strike Source division. We are dipping our hands in Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty 4 most likely as well; I guess time will only tell.

What are your plans for a Counter-Strike: Source team in the near future?

We already have our team that we want and we have had meetings with them. They have already agreed to come play for us. My game manager, Dan C., alias daN_NY, agrees with the team that I have decided to bring on as well, and he will be working hand in hand with them.

What kind of backing for your Counter-Strike: Source squad can we expect to see? Will you be sending them to LAN events?

I have been talking to them about some LANs that they want to go to but I told them that Counter-Strike Source is low-budget for us because there are not many LANs going on with the game at this time. We have agreed to help them out from time to time to get them to various LANs if needed. We also want to get them some hardware support from our new sponsor. The regular stuff like vent, servers, site, and league fees is the easy stuff. But to be honest, that is more than most teams are already getting in Counter-Strike: Source. I have dealt with these players for years and I know they are good people and are deserving of this organization.

Upcoming Date: June 21 revealing new sponsors and hopefully our new site. The new sponsors are very exciting!

That webcast on Dick's goculmination site is still the most unintentionally hilarious thing I've ever seen. The first two minutes are f***ing golden. When he starts the music I lose it... and then he just lets it play for-ever while he sits there like the d-bag he is.

goculmination.com -> the hardest internet podcast gangster site ever.

Brad Dick is a arrogant azhole still thought it was hilarious when I was with one of my freinds when they played against his CAL-Open team... And he used his super admin powers to have the match overturned because he was missing a scoreboard screen shot? He had both demos and smoke ss but wtf did he need the scoreboard screen for. Its unreal not to mention he thinks he is gods gift to the game or something...

Quit trying to make pro teams already...

ROFL #8... brad trys hard and we can only give him credit for trying. I think he can do it if he manages to get sponsors that provide financial backing.

And #15 Source is dead in terms of compeition. All the good teams disbanded after the CGS (mostly went back to 1.6) and left mid-teir players to take over (though there are about three good teams left). The lans that are held are very small and sparadic for source. Nothing like WCG or ESCW where the LANS mean somthing. I wish source had more lans cause I would be playing source more :(

#19 that's putting it lightly. Even a lot of the middle-upper and middle-tier teams(CAL-M/I, CEVO-M/P) called it quits. Some of it had to do with CEVO's issues with their AC, some of it with the death of CAL, and some of it just because the competition had suddenly taken a hit at the higher levels.

and #8 thats classic

"mum shut the door"

#22 The community isn't coming back, really. CEVO-M struggled to fill a team quota this past season, and CAL-M was practically inactive before CAL went under. CAL-I had been in shambles ever since most of the upper level teams left for CEVO-P(to get a return investment on their time). CEVO-P nearly cannibalized CEVO-M because half of the teams stopped playing seriously once the CGS went under. I certainly wouldn't say the community is coming back. It has perhaps become more stable now, since everyone's had a chance to react to the competition thinning out, but that's not saying it's growing either.

That, and to be perfectly honest, the Source community is a mess. Believe me, that's a generous statement to say the least.

But, hey, they brought back MR15 and SM800, which reduced most of the pug teams. That was definitely a step in the right direction. Thanks CGS!

Thats your opinion, and alot of what you say has SOME merit over here in NA, but over the pond or friends havent missed a beat.

#25 European CSS and American CSS are, and have been, separate almost the entire time their competitive communities have existed. There have been little-to-no international LANs, so why you'd bring up anything outside of American CSS in a thread about Eximius is beyond me. I sincerely doubt that Brad Dick is traveling outside of the US to pick up European players, and as it stands, the American scene is in decline. It would be absurd to think I was speaking about anything other than American CSS.

Europeans embraced CSS for a lot of reasons. They have great internet in Europe, the capacity to play against multiple countries, the LAN scene is not as spread out, etc. These are all reasons why European CSS is, on all fronts, more active than American CSS. But Europe, in general, is more open to videogames being used for competition. It is a social negative to associate yourself as an active gamer in America(and, ironically, even by the people involved in it), it's certainly less so in Europe. This goes for all games, not just CSS.

I'm not stating opinions, really(I mean, I am, but I'm attempting to avoid being biased or opinionated). I'm stating observations that I've made, but I'm in no way stating them purely as fact(I'd even venture to say that if you can point out mistakes I've made, do so, because that means I'm wrong and CSS is still as strong as ever).

#26 you are mostly right, but recently there has been alot of activity in international online scrims. alot of teams have been scriming european teams on NY based servers . thats why vitriolic got picked up because an owner of the orginazation saw them beating up on some top european teams in scrims and offered to fly them out to compete. it seems more and more every day the top CSS teams are showing intrest in the european community and lan tournaments. in the future probably gonna be common to hear of teams heading over to compete in major tounamets if funds can be acquired.

Love to hear people cry about Brad... Anyone have anything better to do. He is a good Manager and will be remembered by that you people are just to insecure to realize that ask any other top manager what they think about brad and they will tell you he is a very good manager and owner. So keep crying and flaming brad because you guys cant handle the real truth.

#31 people flame him because he was(maybe still is, I don't know) a giant jackass. I have long since gotten over my issues with the man, but you think people hate him because they're "insecure," but it's really just because he gave them a lot of reasons to hate him.

#28/29 Well, I left the Source scene, right around the time that CAL died, due to personal dislike of the people involved in it, so if I seem somewhat out of the loop that's why. Anyway, that would be interesting, it might help the scene in America actually grow. The problem here is that, in the history of CS(both Source and 1.6), there has really only been a handful of teams with the funds needed to play on international soil. As you said, if funds can be acquired. I have trouble believing that, at the moment, organizations without strong backing will have the cash available to send teams over to Europe. Especially in a scene that would appear stagnant to many of the sponsors that would back said organizations. Another thing we can blame on the economy I guess.

We'll see what comes tomorrow evening, but I really don't see much of anything coming from the terms of success for Eximius, which is a shame.

Being an assistant to the GM, which Brad was, doesn't make you "Assistant GM." The latter denotes a 2nd-in-command position, which Brad never had but tried to manipulate in media. And never was he next in line to be a GM for an expansion franchise... easy for him to say now that it's all over and it's his word against a "what if."
