Ridiculous. I'm so tired of seeing judges setting ridiculous precedences because of their own personal prejudices. Someone needs to tell these worthless morons that their job is to enforce the letter of the existing law, not to invent new ones based off of their personal moral code.

A parent should be able to name their child whatever the hell they want. Even if this law weren't retarded how could it possibly be enforced and who decides which names are too ridiculous to have? Is he going to sit around thinking up every ridiculous name he doesn't want people to have and make them all illegal? Great so you prevented people from naming their kids "Fish and Chips", really good job. The world is a better place now, and they definitely couldn't think of an equally stupid name that you didn't think of. You covered Fish and Chips, so they'll probably just give up and call the kid josh now.

People are so goddamned stupid and useless. If even judges are this stupid there is really no hope for the human race. What a ridiculous waste of time and legislation.

I suggest you find out what a judge is before you spew more garbage and ignorance. Good luck in your search!

no I'm really not. A parent can name their kid schoolbus if they feel like it. Do you honestly think it's the government's job to decide what names people can and can't have? That's completely ridiculous. What a nonsense waste of taxpayer's money.

Again he disallowed fish and chips but allowed number 16 bus shelter??? What the hell has he accomplished other than wasting time and money? How is either of those name any more ridiculous or less acceptable than the other and who is going to sit around thinking of the other 10 million names he failed to make illegal? Is he going to go through hospital registries on his spare time hunting for inappropriate names? This is moronic. There's nothing this idiot can do to stop parents from giving their kids stupid names. Do you think this girl's quality of life is going to suddenly improve because she doesn't have a stupid name? She lied about it anyway so what does it matter? Obviously it can't have affected her that much if no one ever knew it to begin with.

You can tell me I'm wrong but you won't actually try to argue with me because you know I'll fvcking absolutely demolish you if you try. Idiot.

Read the article again (or the for a first time) and then find out what a judge is. The judge did his job.

Or you could just show me how "intelligent" you are with another rambling post of what if's and insults~

A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

His job is to interpret the law and essentially act as a regulator in the courtroom. The article makes it sound like he is taking matters into his own hands, and if this is the case, then he is in fact going too far.

If your argument is going to be that I said judges can't set precedences then learn to read. I said it's not a judge's job to invent them based on their personal preferences and morals. A precedence is generally set when a judge interprets an existing law in a new way for a unique case where the existing law is insufficient, invalid, or impinges on a person's constitutional rights. Judges aren't allowed to just change laws because they don't like them. "ummm, I don't like this name and I disagree with this person so I'm just going to make what he's doing illegal! I can do that, right!?" Pretty sure it's not unconstitutional to give your kid a stupid name.

A judge has power to change laws and set precedences for special instances when it is necessary, not so that fvcking family court judges can run around imposing their ideals on other people. Things like Congress and the Constitution exist for a reason. It's not one idiot's place to start inventing pointless laws because "he's tired of parents giving their kids stupid names!" Even if he were right, it's not a law that you could ever realistically enforce, unless you came up with a list of approved names and made people apply for permission to use any non approved name, so why bother banning a handful of them?

#11 that's what the person writing the article said. The judge didn't walk up there and say that as his reason. He gave his official reason in the article. I don't think a reasonable person (and expecially other judges ). would disagree with that

"Is he going to go through hospital registries on his spare time hunting for inappropriate names?"
Maybe he will only make a ruling on the names brought up in his court? Check.

"Again he disallowed fish and chips but allowed number 16 bus shelter???"
He did not allow those names. The article mentions how he feels those other names were unfortunate and were allowed by registration officials. Had it been brought to his doorstep he would have once again ruled against the name.

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

Remember when he said that?

The judge did his job???

He's a family court judge presiding over a custody battle and he did his job by instating a law that prevents parents from naming their kid "fish and chips"??? Can I have some of your drugs???

If the girl wanted her name changed and he obliged her I don't see any problem with that, but to go off on a tangent and start trying to create laws about it is insane and very far from "doing his job." His job is to deal with a custody case, not to decide what names parents can and can't give their children.

"The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court"

Did you read the article yet? Sounds like she wanted her name changed.

can you explain to me how he's doing his job please and how banning a small selection of stupid names will prevent people from giving their kids stupid names because nothing you said in your last post refuted anything I've said.

I'm guessing you're just way too stupid to directly respond to anything so you'll do that thing stupid people do where they select a sentence fragment and come up with an argument that doesn't actually address the issue we're talking about.

So the girls life is being ruined by the name. She is nine, it's not like she has the power to change it on her own(yet). He even says "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily.". The parents won't do what's right for the child. The judge stepped in and did what was right for the child.

I fail to see how he is NOT doing his job?

wow you are so stupid it's hilarious.

You don't even understand what we're talking about that's how dumb you are. You genuinely don't know what the argument you're involved in is even about.

My argument is that it's not his job to create laws that prevent parents from giving their children names he doesn't like, not that he doesn't have the power to allow someone to change their name.

You are so stupid.

I'm saying a judge shouldn't be creating laws and setting precedences. Allowing a kid to change her name had nothing to do with it. He actually blocked all future parents from giving their children a certain selection of names, he didn't just tell this one girl's parents that they can't give her those names. He effectively created his own useless law whereby parents in new zealand are no longer allowed to name their children "Fish and Chips" or any of the 4-5 other names he decided to ban.

This is not his job. If the girl in his custody case wants her name changed change her name, fine. That doesn't mean it's ok to start inventing rules. The fact that this girl didn't like her stupid name doesn't mean that some other kid wouldn't love it and that a parent shouldn't have the right to choose it.

"New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions"

This law was already in place. He made a ruling on his interpretation of this law. He deemed the name would "cause offense to a reasonable person".
Again. He did not MAKE this law. He made a ruling based on that wording.

When we got our citizenship here in the United States, my parents asked me if I wanted to change my name to an American name. I told them, "No thanks."

Hi. My name is Khoi. Nice to meet you.
