According to sources exclusive to Jumping in Pools, Microsoft will pull off the gaming feat of this generation by releasing its next incarnation of the popular Xbox series. According to our source at Microsoft's facility in Palo Alto, California, the new system will be released on or around December of 2009, just before the Christmas buying season.
The new system, which does not have an official name yet, is preliminarily called the Xbox Edge. This new system was originally slated to be released at the end of 2010, but due to the economic slowdown, our source stated, Microsoft thought that it would be best to get a jump on the market.
"With people not going out due to the recession," said the source, "Microsoft execs felt that consumers are more likely to stay at home and try out some new technology, especially if it's really ground-breaking.""
I highly doubt there will be another console released when they just announced NATAL. Edge wasn't seen at E3, so it's most likely a rumor. If anything we'll probably see NATAL in december 09, anything more would split sales. Microsoft has a thing about timing, and it would be very unlike them to release a new console and a new peripheral for an old system at or around the same time. It would be wiser for them to delay a new console release until they can milk as much out of NATAL as possible.
I don't think they would release it that early. Obviously they're working on the next system, but a release that early would be unlikely. Plus the xbox 360's hardware is still good. There has been rumors where some developers say they've "maxed out" the xbox 360, but there has yet to be a game where the PS3 version looks substantially better.
Also a couple big xbox 360 exclusives are being developed and aren't being released until later. Alan Wake (Spring 2010), Halo 3: ODST (Sept. 22, 2009), Forza 3 (Oct. 27, 2009), Mass Effect 2 (Quarter 1, 2010).
Winter 2010 would probably be the earliest they would release their next system.
If you listen to the talk about the Natal, then you'd know Microsoft had in mind to release a system with it built in. The interviews about the Natal pretty much give you the impression Natal will be 360 and next generation system compatible.
I'm pretty sure releasing this kind of functionality is the point for the next generation of gaming systems.
