palin = fed. indictment?

"She was to have been in office until 2010. Something else is going on here above and beyond what she's saying, though I don't know what yet. Josh Marshall seems to agree, noting in his "first signs of what happened" coverage:
[T]his clearly happened so quickly that Palin hasn't even had a chance to come up with a coherent cover story for her resignation. ... Remember that based on the public record, Palin is a wildly unethical public official, guilty at a minimum of numerous instances of abusing her authority as governor. And a lot of very damaging information has come out about her in the last few days --- though mainly embarrassing information about her character rather than new evidence of bad acts. I would not be surprised if this latest round of revelations shook something else loose that we haven't heard about yet."

I'd expect another shoe to drop very soon here...Looking into it...More shortly...

UPDATE: Alaskan Sarah Palin authority (and occasional BRAD BLOG guest blogger) Shannyn Moore, who broke the news at HuffPo today, tells me she believes, with good reason, that there is an "iceberg scandal that's about to break. She's doing damage control."

She says Palin is "resigning as part of damage control" due to a scandal that is "not of a family nature." ...

"The governor would not be able to continue her job when it comes out," she told me on the phone just now, before adding: "Why would Mark Sanford not resign, but Sarah Palin did? Her family didn't even know about the resignation until they were standing with her by the lake" when she made her announcement.

Yes. It seems another shoe, apparently a big one, may indeed be ready to drop, perhaps within the next week or so. Perhaps earlier now that everyone will be poking around up there, according to the folks I'm hearing from in AK.

FURTHER UPDATE: Okay, I've now been able to get independent information from multiple sources that all of this precedes what are said to be possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin's house and the Wasilla Sports Complex, built during her tenure as Mayor. Both structures, it is said, feature the "same windows, same wood, same products." Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources."

going to obviously have to wait till the work week for confirmation from official sources, but it would explain her erratic exit & "speech"... and by speech (that she wrote) i mean more akin to a drunken rambling

i hope its true just so she leaves politics & destroys any chance of a potus campaign.. maybe then she'll fade into obscurity

also, investigation into a massive Democratic fraud ring in Pennsylvania's legislature heats up as more than 100 subpoenas are filed

I thought it was kinda funny how Obama passed these anti smoking laws, yet he smokes. I understand that he was just passing bills that Bush vetoed because Bush is retarded, but it is still kinda funny. I wonder if Bush is a smoker o.O

Sin taxes on smoking doesn't "cost the economy" anything. The government spends those tax revenues. It's nothing more than a redistribution of your (parents) wealth. If a smoker chooses not to smoke because of the law, they presumably spend their money on something else. The genious of the income tax system is that eventually every cent finds its way to their coffers. If you pay the high taxes on the cigarettes, they get your money. If you choose not to smoke because of the laws, they get their money AND discourage the unwanted behavior. Now, if you wanted to say you and the people at your bar are bitter over the cigarette taxes, then fine, but let's not make false claims. It was a nice try though~

Smoking itself "costs the economy" in lost productivity, and as mg has said, it causes unnecessary health care costs.

Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette.

i really don't buy the logic that if someone chooses not to spend 10 dollars on one thing they'll spend it on something else. smoking bans cost quite a bit in tax revenue. cigarettes are impulse purchases and that being said are a quick source of state income.

What are they doing with the money then? Do they stash it under a rock? Of course they are going to spend it somewhere else. This is America, land of the impulse buy. Say instead of buying that cigarette pack, they buy a shirt or maybe a couple more drinks at your bar. They get sales taxed on their purchase by the state. The business gets income taxed. When the employees are paid, both sides pay fica taxes. When they spend their check, it's more sales taxes and income tax where ever they spent it.

They are getting their money either way.

you're saying saying that someone will logically go "oh jeepers, i can't smoke so i guess i'll buy some CHOCOLATE instead." the money will be incidentally spent but not with the same regularity as an addictive habit such as smoking. not smoking will have no effect on how many more drinks someone orders or how much more clothing they buy.

Cigarettes are (usually) taxed higher than shirts or drinks, so 10 dollars worth of cig's isn't the tax money as a 10 dollar shirt. Though you are right they do get their money either way.

QUOTE:

example situation: Man has 20 bucks. Drinks cost 5 bucks and cigs 10.

1) man buys cigs then at the bar he can only spend 10 dollars on drinks
2) man doesn't buy cigs then spends 20 dollars on drinks because he has 20 dollars instead of 10.

It's very plausible.

I was serious, but I did some research and it looks like that's an old fact. Medical science has improved and now diseases that would have killed a smoker before has turned into chronic diseases that can be treated with lengthy and costly procedures. I'll retract the nonsmokers comment.

#21, eman has a point.

If someone spends 10$ on cigs. A larger portion of that is going to be tax revenue.
If they spend the same 10$ on food, some of it won't even be taxed.

Cigarettes bring the money in faster, but eventually it will all come back in a tax revenue.

The laws are
1) Requiring that 50% of the packaging has a graphic depiction of the causes of cigarettes. So you'll see rotted teeth and stuff like that on ur packs of cigarettes now.
2) The word light, or heavy or anything stating the "strength" of the cigarette is no prohibited.
3) Flavors, and add campaigns are not longer allowed to be directed towards the young.

Soooo
1) Packages will be interesting because you'll want to see the picture on them. This will gross out young impressionable kids so they will likely not smoke when they are older.
2) Light cigarettes will now be called premium, heavy or unfilted will be sailors/navy cut
3) grape dutches may have different names now.

#43, when you go to the super market and buy essential foods, they are not taxed. Thats how it is for me in Florida. There won't be a sales tax. It will get hit by income tax, but there isn't a sales tax.

Also, drug deals.
Payment to illegal aliens which may be sent back home to mexico.

Cigarettes bring in tax dollars faster because a higher percentage of money spent on cigarettes is payed to taxes.

10$ on cigarettes, a fixed percentage is sin tax, then sales tax, then income tax
10$ of food, sales tax, then income tax

Go back to pubbing dod.

New Jersey - You buy a pack of cigaretts $2.57.5 is going to be paied in tax for a single pack.

[QUOTEhttp://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/0..]
The sources that claim this investigation didn't say the FBI is involved (AG/DOJ). The indictments will only be filed (if they are) once they feel they have all their evidence. That being said, there's no guarantee that it'll happen, but even Wasilla residents are still claiming that there are "government officials still currently investigating." Take it for what it's worth, but I'm not surprised there are still diehard republicans defending her actions

Either way, there still is no paper trail on the contractors of her house that her husband claimed were "buddies" who helped him build it by hand. Have you seen the freaking mansion? Not only that but it must be entirely coincidental that they used the exact same building materials as the new hockey complex. If that's honesty then you're as gullible as all the other fundies

If there are no charges filed, I wonder what her sudden & erratic decision to step down is. Especially considering this is an unprecedented move. Seriously, who the heck just up & quits their position of office like this? And you people out there wanted someone with this "dedication," who by the way took 5 different colleges to get a communications degree, as VPOTUS? Maybe she quit because Couric asked to do another interview ;)

We might as well give larry the cable guy the launch codes. At least he embraces his stupidity. then again her exit speech was more hilarious than any of his material so she does have 1 up on him
