Elite Eight Overview On the tail end of an extra long season that featured an extra dose of roster changes and CPL-minded team direction, it's easy to lose sight of how each team has come out by the end of the season. With only eight teams left, it's time to focus in on the results and see what each team has to offer as we head deeper into this postseason.
L1mit - heavy These guys have definitely earned their #1 spot throughout the season and they appear to be as strong as ever heading into their postseason. With hudson and smellypants on heavies, they have perhaps the best duo in CAL-M, and on a map like the upcoming Lennon that goes a long way. On rifles they have the somewhat recent addition of Matt Emmons, always powerful and rarely stoppable with his rifle, and someone who can really make a difference in a match. Flanking him are KiLeN and rickman, two good rifles who aren't as flashy but just as important in maintaining the stability and coming up with the smart plays. On sniper you have a guy who's been playing the gun for years and can't be surprised by much anymore. At this point, girkins is perhaps the strongest, and definitely the most experienced, sniper in CAL-M, and this is a definite strength for Unreachable.
surge - heavy Jetty was the #1 team in the league throughout the majority of the season, taking down everyone they saw and losing only once to a team that was soon after moved up to Invite. In Week 12 we were able to see a very interesting match against Unreachable which came down to the final seconds and was won by `0|K by 2 points. In this match, neither stiffmaster, nor oxossi, nor buzzbee were playing, I believe, which leads me to question which team JETTY is bringing to this match. There's no doubt that missing those three hurt them, and the match could have been their's if their 6 had shown up. I don't believe that JETTY will have much trouble with most teams even without their main 6, but when it comes to the finals, the question will be whether they can put a little effort into it or not.
ProstaR - heavy ProstaR dropped 94 on tds. With that out of the way, I believe Aborted ended the season on a high note. They began fairly strong, winning 3 of their first 4 and dropping the 4th to a CAL-I team, and then in the middle of the season it seems that they hit a bit of a bump in the road, losing 3 of their next 6. Fortunately for them, that 10th match was their final loss of the season and they ended with a 3-game winning streak with an impressive and convincing win over Losgueros and dominant wins over teamdiscostu. Over the course of this season, Stuart is probably the most improved player I've seen in the entire league, and I'm not surprised. He began the season rusty after a lengthy break from DoD and in no time returned to his old form. xome is somewhat weak on the heavy but ProstaR is perhaps the best heavy in Main, so it works out for them. With gloin and mayo flanking Stuart on the rifles, their rifle team has developed into something more skilled than I think most expect. Osto is a very experienced sniper and has been playing behind the scope since the betas, making Aborted a very well rounded team.
tomodak - heavy The last four weeks Losgueros just don't seem to have found their rhythm, although it's difficult to tell what happens behind the scenes. First they received a forfeit win, and then they rescheduled against JETTY and weren't able to find 6 when match time came around. A week later they lost to a good Aborted team and then most recently struggled a bit with Super Clan. After beginning the season 8-2 and giving Unreachable their only loss, they cannot be pleased with the 9-4 record that they ended up with. Regardless of whether they're happy with it, though, this team is good and has a lot to show in these playoffs. It would appear that their weakness right now would be in their heavies, as the Canadian rifle trio has been dominant and made enough of a difference for milkshake to reference them in his Round 1 summary. If acab and tomodak can hammer out some good teamwork and skilled play then it will perfectly complement the jobs done by their rifles and sub, and lg will be able to pick up what they started.
tommygun - heavy At this point we're a much different team than "we" were at the beginning of the season. As of now, Jeffrey is the only person on the team to have played every half of this season and standard is close behind, having missed only one. I was the most recent addition, joining the roster hours before they locked, and since then we've been on a bit of a run. Right now we're battling inactivity and it shows. We were only able to scrim one half this past week with people not being on at all and 3h came out and dominated us right off the bat, getting up 150 points before we could recover. In terms of skill we're pretty well spread through our classes. Standard is an amazing sniper, whacked is an amazing heavy, and Fleener carries me everywhere I go. Smith is relatively unknown and a very good rifle, and tommygun is one of the best heavies I've played with. The real question about schweiss is whether we can become active, and which of our available players we'll end up with for the remainder of the season.
willeh - heavy no Luck is a dangerous team which, online at least, poses a threat to almost every team in the league. They enter the playoffs with a dominating 7-2 record and they've taken down quite a few top teams along the way. As of now, I believe that their weakness is their heavies. Leroy is very capable but he rarely stands out, and willeh is downright retarded and slow. If those two go up against a remotely good heavy team, they'll have to take it fairly slow and they'll need some help. The rest of the team is fairly good. iorio is borderline blatant and jackson and equis both seem to be more comfortable on their home computers, for whatever that's worth. The team to take no Luck down will have to be well rounded, with good enough rifles to handle equis, jackson, iorio and haphazard, and a decent set of heavies to take advantage of their weakness there. Until that team is found, no Luck is alive and and a very real threat to every team they cross.
xpx - heavy I was a little worried about how irawr was doing as they finish out the season, with 3 of their players belonging to other CPL teams and them having to handle the loss of propaganda. But looking at their roster, I'm fairly confident in how they've turned out. xpx and norecoil are a very good heavy duo that could definitely give buzzbee and surge a fair amount of trouble. odm, garyb and endofone are three very capable rifles and it would take an absolutely dominant performance from jg or steve hisey to handle this trio. And finally, I've yet to see wickedpete snipe but he's been around the game for a while and has about as much experience as anyone at this point. This team as a whole is very well rounded and they've eased any worry I had about whether they'd be able to put together a solid 6. The bottom line for this team will be how active they are. With two encroaching CPL teams, half of the team will have difficulty finding time to scrim together, and I know that GaryB and endofone aren't the types to be on the computer, looking for a scrim all day. If this team can utilize any basic teamwork and otherwise play smart individual games, they'll do some damage this postseason.
Makhen First off, I apologize for not having the classes for this team, but with CAL's hectic schedule it was difficult to contact them and I thank makhen for coming to me in the first place with their starting 6. ARMY surprised a few people last week when they took down mtan and it reaffirmed my belief that they've truly found their place towards the end of this season. They're North America's favorite South Americans right now, having had NO problems turning in demos or screen shots and just being all around good guys. On top of that, they're skilled players through and through, and they're not a team to be taken lightly. After the convincing win against mtan last week that motivated ghandi to declare that he's quitting following the CPL, I'm led to believe that ARMY really has something going for them that will absolutely piss the other team off, and this could be VERY bad for a somewhat intolerant Unreachable team. Look for ARMY to surprise again this week by at least keeping it close with Unreachable, and hell, they might even pull out the win.
