Day Of Defeat: Behind the clan : Trademark

By: Ronald Li - Published December 18, 2004 at 3:46 PM EST - Writer Archive
Recently I was able to catch up with Trademark after their win in cal-main over Llama Patrol about cpl and their clan itself.

1. First of all, congratulations on winning cal-main! You guys surpassed a lot of peoples expectations, saying that LP would beat you guys, how does it feel to come out on top?
Dave: It feels really good. A lot of people like to rag on us, but we really are pretty good. It?s nice to see our hard work pay off.
Dorito : Thank You, yes I was pleased as well by turning around what everybody else thought and taking the win over Llama Patrol. I was relieved to see the hard work we put in come out on top.
Fusion : It feels soooo SUPER thanks for asking! Mainly because nobody believed in us ?
Habib : It feels great to come out on top. Many people doubted us but we just played the game.
Triumph : Thankz, Feels good Feelz real good!
Mexicant : It ended up pretty good. No one expected us to win which made it even more great to win.
Bish : Both teams played a GG and I belive we deserved it.
2. How do you feel that Trademark did this past cal-main season?
Dave : We did well. We got a couple tough breaks on some BS losses. The only loss we deserved was the one to LP earlier in the season. We pretty much choked on that one. I?m happy with our performance.
Dorito : We did very well in this past cal-m season except for the 2 unfortunate losses we took early in the season that seemed we would have won if disconnections and map choice. As for the third loss we just didn?t play well to begin with.
Fusion : I feel that we did very well this season, we didn?t let any team blow us out but kept every match really close.
Mexicant : We did not do as well as I expected, we should have done alot better but it ended up with good results
3. What's in store for Trademark now? Will you guys be attending cpl? How are you preparing for that?
Dave : We plan on sticking with DOD as far as it will take us. We look forward to playing in Invite. Yes, we will be attending both the CPL winter and summer events. We have been practicing quite a bit, so we hope to do well.
Dorito : Yes, we are attending winter and summer CPL and since habib can?t go to winter because of finals.
Fusion : The only thing that is in store for Trademark is pretty much scrim as much as we can to get better with not only skills but with our teamwork also. Yes we are going to winter/summer cpl. The way we are getting ready for these upcoming lans are by scrimming, going over where we are going on each map, and places where we can prone at with only our heads popping out ?
4. How do you think you guys are going to fit into cal-invite?
Dave : I think we will do fine. A lot of people don?t like us or give us credit, but its mostly lower players and benchers, so it doesn?t matter I guess. We play a lot of invite teams as it is, and we can usually hold our own. A lot of teams (dice) would like to predict a blowout, but they will change their minds after CPL.
Dorito : I think we will fit right into Invite pretty well, maybe take a season or two to gain the experience from it but nonetheless compete well and not get crushed like some people like to think.
Fusion : I feel we are going to fit in pretty well this season in Invite. This season in main we scrimmed a lot of the cal-i clans and we held our own and showed what we can do.
Habib : With all of the crazy move-ups invite has had after this past season, I have no doubt that we will be a strong contender. I already felt that we had confidence to go against the cal-i teams from this past season, so adding a few im and main teams shouldn?t hurt.
Mexicant : We will fit just fine. We aren?t the best but we will not do bad in cal-i
5. What is your starting lineup going to be for your first cal-invite season?
Dave : I guess now is as good of a time as any to say I won?t be playing competitively after CPL (flame away). I have bigger things to focus on, and all too often DOD and Frontline conflict. I am going to become Tm?s manager and try to do what?s best for us that way. Plus, I?m not the best at controlling my temper, and I don?t like the reputation I am getting as an e-thug. It?s just not me. So beyond that, our six starters are as Follows:
Dorito/Mexicant - Rifles Fusion ? Sniper Habib/Bish ? Heavies Chaos ? Light/Third Rifle (pending CPL)
6. Now more a bit into the clan itself, how and when did each of you start playing Day of Defeat? What made you guys play this game over others?
Dave : I started playing DOD I guess what is almost 3 years ago now, In a LAN center in Colorado Springs, CO with Triumph and some of our friends. We ended up making a clan called [ROBOT] shortly thereafter. I think what?s made me stick with DOD is the people. Besides my close friends in DOD, the community is really cool. We flame each other and talk trash, but as a whole it?s much better and more fun than CS or some other game.
Dorito : I started playing DoD when me and a lot of friends would go to the LAN center and they would always think that they were better at this game(DoD) than I was, but that clearly wasn?t the case, which then we decided to make a clan.
Fusion : I started playing DoD back when 3.1 first came out. My friends got me to play it against them in a lan center and that is how Ea was created. What made me want to play this game over others was the WWII aspect of it. I just love axis v allies it?s SOOO SUPPPERRRR!
Habib : My friend told me about DoD and so I tried it and joined up with United Tiger Force, my friend's clan, with z0isch, skatan, and m0destm0use. I like the competitiveness of the game more so than that of hldm and started playing a lot.
Triumph : Started playing dod 1.3beta just started going to a local lan center to play some games and the owner was playing it he showed us the game he was playing and i was seroiusly hooked me and dave/windsor started going all the time and i had to go get a computer and the internet just to start playing dod. I think i stuck to dod cause of the game play because it is a hard game to get really good at. CS and other games were fun but nothing that i could play all the time or even feel competitive about.
Mexicant : I started playing when i a friend at work showed me it he name was daredevil online name anyways he told me about it (2 years ago) and havent been able to let it go since.I guess im just to used to playing this game rather then playing anything else
Bish : A friend of mine was talking about this 'cool' game one day - so I started to look at pics and videos of it and become started playing in 3.0 on 56k.
7. Is Day of Defeat your first competitive game? If not, what was?
Dave : I guess that depends on what ?competitive? is. If it's playing vs. other players online, I used to be pretty darn good at Starcraft. For a while I was top 15 ladder on bnet east. It turned into a cheat-fest though so I quit. Other than that, I never played any online games.
Dorito : No, Day of Defeat isn?t my first competitive game. I first started out playing the original UT which I played all the way until UT2k3 came out and hated the new version so got into DoD quickly.
Fusion : DoD was the first game ive played in a league for but before there was dod I played UT(the regular one, way better then these 200X versions imo)
Habib : I started playing Half-Life Deathmatch a few years ago and owned at it. I was in a few clans for that but it wasn't very competitive.
Triumph : Ya dod was my first competitive online gaming experience. Once i found online console gaming pretty much went out the window.
8. What are the specs of the computers that you guys play on?
Dave : 3.2 Athlon 64bit, 1 meg Ram, ATI 9600 pro 256 meg.
Dorito : AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 1 gig of ram, and a ATI Radeon 9600XT
Fusion : AMD 2800+ 2.08ghz, 1GB of ram, and a ATI 9600 Pro 256mb
Habib : Hewlett Packard Pavilion AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 2.08GHz and 512 MB RAM. My gfx card is an NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX with 64MB DDR =/
Triumph : 2.6 intel ht 800fsb/ 1g memory/ gf6800GT/ 17'philips lcd/ mx510/ 4s steel pad
Mexicant : 3.02 p4, msi geforce 5200 , 1gb kingston ram, 120 gb hd, mx510 and i think thats it
9. How did Trademark form? How long has the current roster been playing together for?
Dave : Trademark formed when Ea (Elite assassins) got moved to main and promptly died. Dorito (Bryan) and Fusion (Brad) and I had been friends since back when I was in [ROBOT] with Ben (Triumph). I asked them if they wanted to make a clan with me of what we thought were ?top notch players?. Ben joined shortly thereafter, as did Vlad (red) who I had known since 3.1 as well. Justin (Bish) and Andrew (Habib) joined shortly there after when nL broke up, as well were all friends and Justin had played on Ea with Brad and Bryan (?The Twins?). Tom (cheeseymold) joined and went inactive shortly thereafter. Chris (Mexi) joined us this last season. We have been playing together since, about a year I guess.
10. With all the members on the team, who assumes the role of leader?
Dave : I guess that would be me. We always said it wasn?t really like that, since Bryan and Brad and I started it, it kind-of all of our deal. They aren?t much of the speak-up types, so I guess I took over.
Habib : I would say Dave is the leader with his position as server company owner and organizer of just about everything
11. What do you guys do when you aren?t playing Day of Defeat?
Dave : Since I live in Kentucky still for about another 3 months, hang out with my wife, some friends and chill. I also work on my car when I have time. Once I get back home to Colorado, football every Saturday, Snowboarding, parties and hanging out with friends. It?s pretty terrible here, so there isn?t much to do. Must get home?.
Dorito : I am usually going to college during the days and work during the nights other then that if not playing DoD, I usually? wait?. That?s all I do is play DoD.
Fusion : . The things I do while im not practicing for dod is pub dod 24/7. jk. I work at Target and bring in the ferria and attend a local community college full time.
Habib : When I?m not playing dod, I am playing soccer. As a senior in high school, I will probably attend Centre College next year and play soccer there; hopefully it will not interfere much with my dod career.
Triumph : Play a lot of basketball, football, snowboarding and skate a little in my old age
Mexicant : i work 40-50 hours a week and a honda delership i have a girlfriend i hang out with most of the time. if im not doing those things im sleeping
Bish : Just chill with friends, talk to some girls, and burn up my gas on racing.
12. What's something strange or interesting about each Trademark member that the public doesn?t know about yet?
Dave : I don?t know about strange but Ben is a partier, Mexi is a homosexual (just kidding, but he does seem to enjoy a bit of man flesh now and then). Andrew is very intelligent and athletic, and Bish is much better than his bad internet shows online. Tom is clean off his rocker, and Brad and Bryan are some of the nicest guys you would ever hope to meet.
Dorito : Don?t know if everybody knows but Fusion and I are twins and I?m better at DoD than he is. Chris (Mexicant) has the color changing glasses that all amaze us when we see him. Andrew (Habib) is too god damn smart I think I?m in the third grade when talking to him. :P Tom (Cheeseymold) he is just the token Canadian. Ben (Triumph) is usually drinking or eating while scrimming or playing DoD hehe. Justin (Bish) has a crappy computer and internet. Dave (Windsor) just gets beat up every time I see him.
Fusion : Some interesting facts about our clan are Bryan(dorito) and I(fusion) are twins and in Greg?s(chaos) words we can mindlink together and tell each other where others are. Bryan and I talk to each other on vent even though we are sitting right next to each other. Chris has some cool glasses that changes the lens? to shades when he steps outside or when his powerstrip is on. Andrew(habib) is just a practical jokester and tries to mess around with everyone. Justin(Bish) is very good at the game day of defeat if it wasn?t for his brother starting to d/l right when our match/scrim starts. Ben(Triumph) Who?s that? Nah j/k he?s probably drunk right now ?. Tom(Cheeseymold) He is secretly planted on our team to blow us all up at one time with a tk nade. Greg(chaos) is the top model for photoshop chops. And last but not least Dave(Windsor) he is the man people love to hate and hate to love. He is actually a nice guy but when people act stupid towards him he will let you know.
Habib : I am a professional hackey sack player.
Triumph : Dave has red hair its really funny, the twins dorito/fusion wont stop calling me for my manness, cheesymold has warts on his bum, mexi definatly cant do it on lan *that rymes if you think about it*, Habib is my Special life Partner ;D and i rock balls with a side pipe.
Mexicant : Dorito hacks?
13. Does Day of Defeat take up a huge chunk of your daily life? Would you say any of you are addicted?
Dave : Not really. I have to be online for work anyway, so I just play when I have time. I don?t think any of us are addicted, but we do like it a lot.
Dorito : I wouldn?t say im addicted, cuz I find myself most of the time while scrimming getting rather bored and just want to do something else but whatever?s clever.
Fusion : I don?t believe dod takes up a huge chunk of my life, I still have time to go to school/work and go out with friends and such
Habib : I?m always on my computer doing something and I do play DoD a lot when we have people around. Usually the term ?addicted? carries a negative connotation with it, but I would say I do enjoy playing the game a lot and will play it until the wee hours of the morning on a school night. DoD always comes before homework.
Triumph : I try and be balanced with it if i start playing i usualy play for a couple hours everyday, but usualy more. Wouldnt say im addicted or anyone on our team is but we all definatly are into the game and have a lot of fun playing.
Mexicant : Yes its a big part eveyone thinks im insane for playing this alot. I would say yes im addicted.
14. In a team based game like Day of Defeat, three factors are often found to generally rate a clan, strategy, teamwork and skill, how would you rank these three factors in terms of Day of Defeat and why?
Dave : I think DOD is a great example of all of those things. If it wasn?t, it would?ve died like COD is.
Dorito : teamwork and skill is hands-down the best combo for dod.
Fusion : In the game of Day of Defeat I feel that if you have the teamwork + skill, you can be a very scary team. Strategy kind of fits in with the teamwork so having those two can be good.
Mexicant : 1 Teamwork 2 strategy 3 skill. I think its more of a team based game rather then a indvidual. strategy helps in capping flags which ends up winning the game if you guys didnt know that already. Skill = just prone in a corner and your good to go
15. Are there any specific players that you guys look up to? Anybody in cal-invite or a new, budding player?
Dave : I wouldn?t really say I ?look up to? any dod players. I do admire some players for their temperament and self control though. Guys like Profiction, Dorito, Fusion and Bewton. It?s always nice to see people behave themselves, even if I don?t. ? I also admire guys like Snipper and Bobby from 85th who have a balanced view of e-life.
Dorito : mainly look up to the top rifles in dod, you guys know who you are don?t get big headed. :P
Fusion : There aren?t really any specific players I look up to but if I would have to give one would have to be Mexicant mainly because he came from cal-o straight to cal-main and pretty much raped every single match(other than the cal-m final ?). He has showed how good he is online and yes even on lan.
Habib : I look up to cheeseymold because he can do a cool sprint jump out of the bridge window on anzio.
16. What are your goals as a clan right now?
Dave : We hope to place well at CPL (both summer and winter), develop some respect, and do well in invite.
Fusion : I think our goals as a clan is just like any other clan, get better. I think a main priority now is practice as much as we can as a team for this upcoming cal-invite season and the two cpl events arriving soon.
17. What are your expectations for CPL, in terms of Trademarks placement and the top 5?
Dave : I would be lying if I said we didn?t expect to place in the top 5 or maybe even top 3. We are good, and now we just have to show others. I just hope Chaos is as good on LAN as he says he is. I think that x6, the Dice pug and Ronin will do well.
Dorito : I think we can possibly place top 5 if we play like we usually do
Fusion : My expectations for CPL are very high. We have a very good chance to place in the top 5 because we have all played with each other on lan and know we are capable of what we can accomplish online
Triumph : I definatly think are going to do very well and top 5 is for sure hopefully top 3.
18. You guys just picked up a new intermediate team, although not featured in this interview, who exactly are they, and why have you decided to pick them up?
Fusion : The new IM team was the clan formerly known as [30-06]. ]. They are great guys led by Rob (exzodious). We have met a couple of their members at a lan event and they were nice people. Their clan has been in playoffs for the past 3 seasons but they were looking at a break up, so Dave asked Exzodious if they would be interested in playing as our IM team. I with them luck in this upcoming IM season.
Triumph : There part of the doggpound and we had to look out for the little homies.
19. With dod as a fresh addition to the cpl, do you see this a great opportunity for dod players plus the game itself? However, the development team even said themselves that they don?t really feel they want their game to be professional, what are your opinions about this?
Dave : I think that dod going to CPL is the best thing that can happen for it and for us as a community. It?s pretty stupid that the devs wouldn?t want it as a professional game. Why not? It?s a great game. They shouldn?t say something like that, especially with dod having a following like it has. The players and fans should be the ones who decide that.
Dorito : If the devs don?t want this game to be professional they need to commit suicide quickly.
Fusion : Yes I do see this as a great opportunity for the players and the game. The players have been waiting for this chance a long time now and now that it has happened I think we really stepped up with getting people to show. It will really show big sponsors community is not dead yet. As with the developers stating they don?t want this game to be professional is dumb. Maybe because people like us will be MAKING money off of a game they created or they are just a pub type player.
Habib : I believe that dod is starting to thrive as it has joined the ranks of CPL. With the controversial downfall of Call of Duty, many cod players are switching to the dod scene. Also, since Counter-Strike:Source was announced as the official cs game at summer CPL ?05, a lot of cs clans are also switching to dod. This will allow more competition for the game and allow it to rise to new levels. I don?t care about the dev team.
Triumph : This is a huge step forward one that i know a lot of dod players have been waiting for. Im happy to see dod start to move forward. And i hope the dev team dies.
20. What are your guys?s hopes for Day of Defeat:Source? Do you think it?ll be the proclaimed saviour of competitive Day of Defeat? Or will it pull it away from the competitive scene?
Dave : Well, I hope it is. It should be. The guys who are paying the ?DOD bills? are the competitive players, not the pubbers. If you look at a server list, there aren?t very many that aren?t by a team, for a team or at least have a team as regulars. competitive DOD is what keeps it going. People may start as pubbers, but very few don?t get involved with a league or a team at some point
Dorito : I am not to sure about DoD:S I would like it to be the same gameplay that we have now, but better graphics/hitbox?s/registry. And sure hope to god it doesn?t turn out to be like CS:S.
Fusion : I feel dod:s will finally put dod over the top of all the wwii mods in the competitive scene. If it isn?t buggy a lot of the CoD players will make their way back to day of defeat.
Habib : Despite how good dod:s will be, it has attracted many players. Many feel that it will be an excellent game and revolutionize dod in a positive way, so they have started playing dod. As for myself, I believe the game will take some adjusting to and possibly a new gfx card here and there, but that ultimately the community will adapt and the game will be a success.
Triumph : Thats a great question and one we can only wait to see. I hope it does blow up in the competitive world cuase it is a great game, and we can just hope the dev team didnt stray away from what dod is and what i can be.
21. Is Trademark sponsored by any companies right now? What kind of sponsorship do they provide? Are you on the lookout for bigger ones?
Dave : Right now Tm is sponsored by Frontline Game Servers and wingamers.com. They provide us with Servers, Room, board and admission at LAN events. I will be looking to add to that after CPL. Our Goal is to get sponsored by Taco Bell. That?s some goodness. ;)
Habib : Taco Bell here we come!
22. Do a lot of the members multi-game? Or are you all solely Day of Defeat players?
Dave : Pretty Much all of us are just DOD players except Greg. He is CAL-Invite CS as well. We are very dedicated, so we try not to get into much else.
23. What are Trademark?s strengths in your opinion? Weaknesses?
Dave : Our strengths are our Skill and our teamwork for sure. I will probably get flamed for this, but I think we have 2 of the top 4 rifles in NA-DOD right now, and 2 of the best heavies as well. Our weaknesses are: Myself and Mexi?s tempers, and our (undeserved?) reputation as e-thugs.
Dorito : I think our strengths are that we?ve been playing together for a very long time so we pretty much know how we all think, and not to sure about weaknesses.
Fusion : I feel our strengths are definitely in our rifles and heavys, we are working on getting better with a sniper and light auto.
Habib : Trademark?s strength is definitely dedication. We all love to play the game and are working hard to become better and make the game succeed. We also have great individual skill and teamwork. Some weaknesses are cheeseymold?s tk nades when he plays and some of our players tempers.
Triumph : Strength's are of course for one our player's are fun, competitive and dedicated . Weakness is cheesy's nades.
24. How do you guys feel about the recent moveups that cal made, in order to accommodate a more ?competitive? scene?
Dave : I was pissed at first. We go thru all of this to win main, only to see 10 other teams get moved up to? Now I guess it?s about what?s best for DOD. If that?s some reorganization and some main calibre teams in invite, so be it.
Dorito : If the recent move-ups are for getting more competition in cal-dod by all means do it, cuz the community is rising very fast so the more competitive teams the better.
Fusion : At first I was kind of mad that all those teams got moved up to what is supposed to be the best of the best. It kind of game us(Tm) and LP the feeling that we worked hard to get to the cal-main finals and earn a spot in cal-invite when teams that didn?t make it passed the first round still got moved up. But hey what can we do, all we can do now is go out every week and play our hardest.
Habib : Although appalled at first, I then realized that it would help boost the community and gain more popularity in the e-sports community. No doubt that some teams need to be moved down, but that will work itself out through preseason and the next season of CAL.
Triumph : Its definatly hard to take being that when you work for it and you get there and ton's of other ppl get it handed to them it doesnt seem right. but if its for the good of the game as a whole then its understandable.
Mexicant : I guess its ok we will have a lot more fun i will tell you that
25. In your opinion, what could be done to improve the Day of Defeat competitive scene?
Dave : Not much, I think Greg is doing a very good Job. I don't think admins should be allowed to play in the league they admin though.
Fusion : The thing we can do to improve the day of defeat competitive scene is maybe get more custom maps that are mainly for matchplay. It kind of gets tiring playing the same maps EVERY single season or especially both railroads back to back.
Habib : I think dod needs to have more big lans. This will probably happen if winter CPL ?04 is a success. With more lans comes more popularity and more competition. Also, the accumulation of sponsors by DoD teams is a big factor for dod?s competitiveness. European and other foreign teams need sponsors to travel to the US to play at CPL.
Triumph : Get a new dev team one that actualy backs the game, have more ppl active in the community getting lans and being able to keep dod in cpl. Dod is were it is cause of the community and its pretty obvoius that we are going to be the only ones trying to promote the game so thats what we have to do.
26. How do you see Trademark doing in your first season of cal-invite, with the new moveups in mind?
Dave : The Move-ups will make it much easier, that?s for sure. I think we should do fine. We are good, dedicated and work well as a team. I would say we will have a positive W-L ratio come season end.
Dorito : With the new move-ups in invite I think we will be doing a lot better, but even if they didn?t move up them, I still think we could have done pretty well against the top teams.
Fusion : I feel that Trademark would have faired well in Invite even before all these teams got moved up. But with a lot of considered lower level main teams last season being moved up to Invite will only help us.
Triumph : The new move ups are definatly going to make a big difference and there are some obvoius wins there. Just on that i know were going to do good, but weve always scrimmed cal-i clans and done well we have previous cal-i exp'd ppl also so i know we'll do well.
27. Are there any clans you guys scrim consistently with? Any clans you guys look up to or just plain hate?
Dave : We scrim pretty much anyone. I think I personally respect GW/x6 for the professionalism and respect they show. I also like Ronin, HighFive, 0|K, RLTW (usually) and Highball. I don?t like AV. They play lame, they cheese you, and then they think they are good. I?m not a big fan of UI. I also Don?t like some players on Dice who are just plain a-holes. Bleargh however has always been cool, as has Sparz. I don?t really have anything against any other teams that I can think of. ?
Dorito : We usually don?t have any clans that we consistently play against, but the clans that we look up to would have to be x6, just because of their professionalism and not being total jackasses. Clans that we hate depend on the people in our clan, cuz I don?t really hate any clan out there, im a lover not a fighter. :P
Fusion : During this past main season we would scrim hb, x6, ronin, and dice a lot. I don?t think there is a clan we really try to take after but as for the clan we really hate would have to be Dice. Mainly because EVERY time we scrim them it ends up in a bickering match and there is no dod being played at all, then #scrimdod gets all rowdy and all that good stuff.
Habib : We scrim with almost anyone. I?m not sure about clans we hate, but I definitely hate KTz as does a good majority of the community.
Triumph : I love everyone as long as they dont talk to me or kill me in game. I plain hate anyone who try's to be hard online you know who you are. We scrim pretty much every clan in invite and main as much as possible no one in particular all the time.
Mexicant : I love everyone
28. How would you guys describe the skill gap between open and intermediate teams? Main and Invite teams?
Dave : In light of the recent move-ups, I think each league kind of blends into the other. It used to be an Invite team would pretty much always beat a main team, a main team over an IM team etc.
Fusion : I think the skill gap has been getting closer and closer every single season. But there will always be those high ranked teams in a lower level that can easily beat the lower ranked teams in a higher division.
29. Any advice for budding Day of Defeat players out there?
Dave : Start small, practice, and stick up for yourself and your team.
Dorito : Just keep at it
Fusion : Stick to the 3 P?s? PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE or PRONE PRONE PRONE!
Habib : Try to get with a team and attend summer CPL ?05. Also, join CAL and scrim a lot. =P #scrimdod on gamesurge.
Triumph : Run 5 miles a day eat your wheaties. Dont Prone, KTE, KTP, bow down when i come to your town!
30. Any shoutouts?
