Day Of Defeat Source: CAL-Invite Semifinal Predictions

By: Sean Kalas - Published February 07, 2007 at 4:51 AM EST - Writer Archive
This week brings two exciting matches on the famous map of Donner with the matchups of Visual Gaming & eMazing Gaming along with Check Six & Normadic Soldiers.
It’s down to the final four teams in Day of Defeat: Source’s first-ever invite playoffs. Two games, two winners, one goal: championships. Not surprisingly, the top four seeds in this season’s playoffs have continued on after winning their semi-final matches with safe margins.

Coming into this semi-finals week, we have had an interesting season. Three teams have dropped out of invite due to various roster problems, Visual as the 3-peat champions of DoD:s has gone 6-3, and Nomadic Soldiers held the number one seed for some of the season. This week's matches are on dod_donner, a classic map from 1.3 that was brought over by the devs with the release of source. eMazing Gaming is looking to knock out Visual Gaming and the Nomadic Soldiers are going up against Check Six.

This map, Donner, is definitely one of the best in Source. I like to call it an offensively passive map, meaning whoever gets mid first has the best chance to win the round. Once the mid is taken, clans can relax and think about fragging and holding instead of pushing. There are two ways of all capping at the invite level. First is the ninja cap, which is well-known and hated - when someone sneaks past their opponent's lines and is allowed to cap out without being noticed. The other one is what I like to call the 'Anaconda cap.' This uses pushing up gradually as a team and out-fragging the opponents enough to squeeze around the first flag from all sides. At this invite level of play, I don't see any one player fragging and capping out by himself. Lastly, holding mid gives you a point every 30 seconds, so the most a team could get by holding mid the entire round would be 39 points. So, if neither team caps during the first half, the match is still up for grabs in the second half.
