The 6th Season of CAL brings changes to the game to hopefully bring better player numbers and increase competition to the league. As we approach Season 6 in CAL, Day of Defeat: Source is handed a few changes. Season 5 saw the introduction of experimental 3rd party modifications known as the "Cone of Fire" and "Pistols" as well as the change in friction and movement speed. The purpose was to change the way the guns behaved and rewarding people for more accurate shots, but they also wanted to add in a second gun to kind of implement the 1.3 setting. When the programs were released they were met with mixed reviews, and both had their positives and negatives. For Season 6 however, these modifications are being left behind. CAL is going to go back to Vanilla source as it has been played prior to Season 5. Once again, this decision is controversial, and many in the community have express both praise and criticism towards the decision that CAL has made. Facts on why CAL reverted back to their origins ![]() A major concern for CAL specifically was the Cone of Fire (or CoF) and the change of balance it made to certain weapons. The CoF seems to provide a good fix to make the 'feel' of Source and its weapons similar to the original Gold engine. However an unfortunate by-product is the changing of the balance in guns. Some have become over-powered while others have become under-powered. In order to maintain a better consistency in competition as well as provide the most fair and balanced game-play, CAL has decided a mod such as the CoF is not in its best interest. Another loss for the up-and-coming season 6 is the removal of many custom maps. CAL always has, and will, support custom mapping and mappers who desire to make a balanced, attractive map for competitive play. There is a line that needs to be drawn as to what maps, and how many, are needed. On top of being a hassle, and another 'tech savvy' issue for league play, custom maps such as Anzio+ are unnecessary. The original stock Anzio that is provided is already a very good map, if not one of the best. The purpose of Anzio+ was to hopefully better frame rates (Anzio is one of the larger, more taxing maps in Source) as well as get rid of what some believe to be 'undesirable' locations. But it is not up to CAL to provide such handicaps to those who have systems that under-perform this game. Also, a map such as Anzio+ is not as easily accessible or widely known as original stock Anzio - and the issue of promoting ease-of-access to CAL and the promotion of league-play is hindered. What is staying with CAL this season is the changed friction and stop-speed settings. These settings have perhaps the most immediate positive influence on how weapons, movement, and their movement penalties behave. What makes it even better is the ease of change in the server configuration itself. The friction and stop-speed settings require no installation of a 3rd party mod. Very nice! Ultimately CAL is trying to distance itself from relying too heavily on 3rd party modifications and focusing on the stock game itself. 3rd party modifications have to be redone every single game update. This is not only a hassle on the developers of these mods, but it also disrupts the league at any given time that these updates occur (which tend to happen on Wednesday match nights no less!). By removing 3rd party mods and relying only on the developers of the game itself (Valve) the consistency from season-to-season can be established and fluid transition into league play for casual, or competitive, competition can occur. The Day of Defeat: Source division has seen so many changes over the past couple of seasons that it's time to settle down and set the groundworks so the league can grow and competition can prosper. |

im looking forward into playing s6!!
People need to stop crying about source and either play it or leave. The Euros play it stock and we should too.
cof didnt make weapons overpowered or underpowered thats all opinion not fact your article is trash. the fact that cal is removing cof mod, because there worried about dods being updated makes me laugh. It seems to me like a changing of the gaurd in the cal office but thats jus speculation on my part(i have no idea).
Edit: if your going to move all of main to invite call it what it is main, thanks.
The only changes that seem to have been made in how each of us play is the distances we put ourselves between our opponents. e.g. Rifles are a little closer, not 200 yards away, heavies stay more concealed, not wantonly firing out in the open.
Turns out the game gets a lot more intense this way and you have to play a little smarter because guns like the heavies can't laser-beam their way into the upper church loft, and rifles can't sit and corner camp for 20 minutes in the same spot. Not to mention the sniper can actually get a little distance power again to help clear out those rifles. Better yet, is they end up using their iron sights on those really long distance shots. Imagine that! USING EVERY FACET OF YOUR WEAPON! Wow, that seems so gay doesn't it?!?
The game ends up being a lot more challenging and requiring each class to work together better imo.
I'm sorry you guys like your own personal glory tracks though, it's a shame. Perhaps you should play Quake instead? I know the rest of us who enjoy this game would appreciate it if you just...left. I wouldn't miss you.
And as far as specific 1.3 players go, I'm surprised they still hold on to this pipe dream of bringing 1.3 back. The whole gold engine is going out the door on all fronts. 1.6 is losing teams by the thousands and guess where they are going? Source. Right now is a perfect time to capitalize on the fact that the industry standard of computer power is on the rise, meaning Source becomes an easier game on systems, meaning more people can and will play the games. And if you want to be a competitive gamer, a smaller community is the best way to make a name for yourself and become successful. If you think you are going to go and play CSS or CS 1.6 and make money off of LAN's you're going to be in a world of hurt. The game is so huge that only the people who basically played it from day 1 have gotten anywhere. Maybe I just believe sometimes being a Big Fish in a little pond isn't a bad thing. Right Cypher?
oh well....one good thing did happen this season which is the removal of stupid maps like anzio+
I have to laugh at this terrible game and the circus it has always been and still is. It is not a competitive game, and was specifically designed not to be! When are you people going to realize it? It was made by the pubber devs for pubbers so it could appeal to a larger audience, couple that with leeching off the day of defeat name, valve stood to make alot of money. I HIGHLY doubt valve will update dods as they are working on the release of portal/hl2 e3/tfc2, and then I'm sure they will shift to css. It makes no bussiness sense for them to waste time/money fixing a game that was not accepted by the VAST majority of the community and was a complete failure from launch. Case and point I remember when 1.3 would have 20k people pubbing and their were 3000 players actively playing in leagues. Now 1.3/source combined aren't even close to half of that. Valve already squandered the chance of this game being a success (and killed off dod 1.3's success) as people have moved on. If source would have taken off from launch with the numbers of players that were around we would be sitting pretty (with 1 large community, on a new engine with new graphics and new life) but it didn't and it stands NO chance now. Valve and no one else killed 1.3 AND source. So please stop hoping for all these great things that are not going to come. Play the game for fun wether it's 1.3 or source, whichever you enjoy.
Not that I care but just some food for thought: What will the euros think if valve updates dods and cators to the american wants with pistals/cof/ect. Because with an offical update they wouldn't be able to play what they are playing now, which seems like it's a success.
anyway nice to see that both the european community and the american community are playing the same game again , which is a must if there is to be hope for a international dod:s lan in the future

I think many people would be against it (like we were against source when it didnt turn out to be 1.3) but in the end we would just live with it and continue playing. But lets be real here, valve aint going to do that :P
pol.ak (WHY IS HIS NAME NOT ALLOWED ON GOTFRAG? DID HE CHEAT?) sucks
lolamiright<3
actually it's cause some dbag Lewis Sears has like 4 inactive accounts and one of them is "Sears", plus the underscore is totally cute.
would it really have been impossible to have both the regular DoD:S league continue from season 4 to season 5, and allow a standalone 1 division DoD:S-CoF league at the same?
it seems to me that the way things were done a lot of unnecessary resentment might have been caused, first with the CoF-hating natural-DoD:S lovers being forced to play with CoF, and now with CoF supporters having their modification (which the developers worked very hard on im sure) dropped.
...but keep in mind this is the opinion who hasnt read anything on the subject for more than a year
A CoF plug-in isn't what this game has needed. Rather, the game needs an overhaul altogether. It needs the patches that have been applied to CS:S as far as netcode and hitbox adjustments go. The gun scripts need to be redone to better balance out the weapons. And most importantly, the left corner glitch needs to be corrected. I think the CoF causing players to be killed a lot easier instigated the problem many players made the glitch to be compared to prior seasons.
PS, sofaking is truly a teddy bear acting as a lion, and I will be suffocating your entire team in their sleep while their drunk this coming weekend, Jason. THANKS!
#36, splitting the community isn't exactly the best idea when you have a fledgling community such as ours
