Halo 3: MLG Atlanta kicking off

By: Travis Cosby - Published November 25, 2005 at 3:00 PM EST - Writer Archive
After watching the Team 3D brothers, Dan “Ogre1” Ryan and Tom "Ogre2" Ryan, roll over the international competition last weekend at the World Cyber Games in Singapore, the Halo 2 community now turns its eyes to Atlanta where the Eastern Conference Championship will begin Friday evening.

MLG Atlanta Schedule

It was to no small surprise that the Team 3D brothers were able to bring home the Gold for the United States. It was also no surprise that not a single team was able to post more than 35 frags against them. While the competition in Singapore is hard to gauge due to the lack of international events besides the WCG, it should be said that these are the best Halo 2 players from their respective countries. While it has been discussed that North Americans are at an advantage (see: Short-Changed: A European Gamer's Plight) over other continents due to the lack of quality games that players from continents such as Europe, Australia, and South America are able to receive from matchmaking. While I do believe this is a hindrance to players outside of North America, I do not believe that it will stay this way for long. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and even Colombia all displayed the skills it takes to compete at the high level of competition such as the Major League Gaming tournaments.

However, what will be said about the level of international competition if Team 3D does not come out victorious in the coming weekend? If Team 3D falls to another MLG seasoned team, will the international players be thought of as weak? This remains to be seen. In my opinion, it is necessary for the tournaments to come to the players. Why are the Major League Gaming tournaments only in the United States? When will these tournaments begin to branch out into other countries? When will foreign teams begin to come to the United States to compete?

Regardless, it is now the city of Atlanta Georgia which has the attention of all competitive Halo 2 fans. Will Team 3D prevail or will Trademark Gamers make their place as champions with the return of Matt "Zyos" Leto to their roster? Will Team EG make a top five placing? It should not be forgotten that it was the Canada that faced Team 3D to determine Gold in Singapore. Will the Canadians pull an upset and take it all? Stay tuned to the coverage as we bring you all the scores and updates live from the Hyatt Regency in downtown Atlanta!
