Halo 3: s2 Quarterfinals Interview: ¿Gryp

Peter Harlan's interview with Lee "gryp" Trinrud about Wat¿'s playoff match with Duality.

Last week you were able to take down Europe’s finest; zeroPoint. Could you give us a brief summary of the match?

¿Gryp: First half, zP played rather standard trying for portal block, we got it down, put up an O block and held it for the half, scoring on the mid 3 possessions, woudl have been 4 but seclusion rocketed me for no reason as i was entering an empty base. Second half, zP played a bit more aggressive and we never had a solid block up. Their 2 caps were rebound caps where they had an extra guy to pick it up. Our cap was an empty base on a quick Offense where they were all stuck inside from their previous offense. Overall, they played rather well for the 133 pings they had. We adjusted well to their style and it was a rather good game on both halves. Both teams had caps that were taken away due to lag so that kinda cancelled itself out.

Last season Wat? had a major roster overhaul; losing stkgd, Zyos, and rage. How does this season’s team compare to last season’s team?

¿Gryp: Losing stkgd and zyos was a good thing for us, they wanted to run strats one way we(kron and I) wanted to run them another way. So it was obvious something had to change. Losing rage hurt at the start, as he was the other piece of the triforce, but seclusion has filled in rather well and over the past few weeks has found his niche in the team. I think this season's team is better than last seasons just due to the fact we are all on the same page. We all have the same goal and listen to each other. I think this team also has better aim than last seasons and that will help us when we get to CPL.

Wat? started off the season 6-0 but lost the last   two games of the season. What happened in those two losses and do you think last week’s victory over zeroPoint corrected those mistakes?

¿Gryp: Our first loss was to gamewyze on our worst map. That was expected and we were rather happy with how close we got it. Needless to say, our second loss was not a shocker as we developed our new sidewinder strategy vs uS in about 6 back to back scrims. So they knew what was coming and had the proper counter strat. Losing those 2 games meant nothing anyways as we had already locked the division. We used the 2 losses to analyze what we need to change and tweaked our strats accordingly. Yeah, it sucked to lose the two games but it wasnt really a shocker to us.      After the CPL, you have said, like many; that you   are done with Halo.

What do you plan on doing after the CPL?

¿Gryp: I think most of us plan to get ready for the fall semester. We may play half-life2 or doom3. Wherever the next tourney is. It's really to bad for halo as it was a unique gametype.

This season Duality has been one of the biggest surprises. What do you think of Duality and do you think they will pose a threat at CPL?

¿Gryp: Duality if i recall is the clanDC guys mixed with some eLe. They are rather solid and have stuck it out and it is showing in their games. I think they will do better than clanDC did last winter and they could possibly pull an upset or two depending on the map selection and who they are up against.

This week’s map is Danger Canyon, a map that is known for its stress on teamwork and heavy weapons. Wat? has been considered the best Danger Canyon team for over half a year. Why do you think Wat? has been so successful on the map?

¿Gryp: We have been successful on it at first due to a mini-lan at rage's pad over thanksgiving break last year. We must have played about 40 dc scrims in a 3 day period. So in that sense, we basically have played it more than every other team and thus are more comfortable on it. Danger Canyon also leans towards our strengths, that of heavy weapons and ghosts. Lately teams have tried new strategies versus our set and they are working well, so we have had to tweak it a bit and now it feels like it did 6 months ago.

Duality has been practicing very hard for this match. How confident are you heading into it and what do you think will be the keys to victory?

¿Gryp: I feel pretty confident going into this game. It could have been versus any of the remaining teams and I would have felt our team would win. As you stated, danger canyon is our best map.

Shoutouts?
