Halo 3: Map Review - Colossus

By: Ziggy Rivera - Published February 23, 2005 at 1:20 AM EST - Writer Archive
Taking a look at the map of CAL week 7, Colossus, one question comes into mind "Is this a suitable map for Assault?". Read on and find out...
Week 7 of CAL pits teams against each other on Colossus, a mid sized map in which both teams spawn points are literally across from each other in open view. The only thing seperating the two teams is a conveyer belt on a lower level, forming a gap between both sides of the map. Large canisters of weird blue stuff that blows up when you shoot it are moving along this conveyer belt, and players can use the conveyer to speed up their movement, or use the canisters to blow up their opponents.

The overshield is also located on the bottom portion of the map, between two holes in the floor that form the end of the conveyer belt. Dropping down into those holes means your dead, so picking up the OS can be tricky but is not really all that difficult. In the middle of the map a large Unreal Tournament style chute boosts you up to the top where the covenant sniper is held, and is important for teams to control as it is the only sniper rifle on the map.

When it comes to pushing to the base with the bomb, teams can actually take the bomb itself and literally bounce it across the map. The physics in Halo 2 allow for a player to take an object, drop it from a high position such as the top of your spawn points on colossus, and if the object hits a hard surface correctly it can bounce far across the map. Some teams have perfected bomb bouncing, and will bounce the bomb after a successful push to the base. It is impossible for a team in CAL to return the bomb after it is bounced across, since 'touch return' is turned off, so basically the other team just has to defend their position and make sure their opponents don't come anywhere near the bomb until it returns.

In my opinion, I don't feel colossus is well suited as an assault map. When two top teams go against each other, I feel this will just be either a stalemate or a very low scoring game. Low scoring games are boring, not fun to participate in, and definitely not fun to watch. Hopefully sometime in the future this map is replaced with a better suited new map released by Bungie.
