As promised, Angel concluded the CPL Summer 2004 event with more details about the world tour. Past his on-stage announcements, we've spoken directly to Angel and Scott Valencia about the world tour. Read on for new details on what looks to be the biggest thing for gaming in 2005... ![]() As for the locations, ten separate countries were announced. China, Spain, Yugoslavia, Brazil, Sweden, USA, Taiwan, Japan, UK and Chile will be the ten locations, in that order. Many of the venues haven’t been announced or decided with different possibilities still being weighed. One of the most important announcements is that many of the sites on the World Tour will be hosting other tournaments along with the World Tour official game. Individual conversations with a few hosts confirmed CS tournaments to be run in Spain, Brazil and Chile while every organizer GotFrag spoke with expressed interest in running a multiple formats. This is a bit of a change as many thought that the World Tour game might be the only tournament at those stops. We’ve gotten official word from CPL Operations Director Scott Valencia that all stops on the tour will have BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) areas, saying that each stop will have a minimum of 1,000 attendees. The Stops, The Money More good news as Angel announced an addition $500k will be added to the World Tour strictly for Counter-Strike prizes. Many stops have scheduled to have other games involved. Here’s a breakdown of all the current information known for the tour stops: CPL China: February 2005 City – Shanghai Games – World Tour Game, TBA CPL Spain: March 2005 City - Barcelona Games – World Tour Game, CS, TBA CPL Yugoslavia: April 2005 City – TBA Games – World Tour Game, TBA CPL Brazil: May 2005 City - San Paulo Games – World Tour Game, CS, WC3 Notes: They are looking to bring in 3K people with a BYOC and local pre-Qualifiers, CPL Sweden: June 2005 City – TBA Games - World Tour Game, TBA CPL USA: July 2005 City – Dallas Games - World Tour Game, TBA CPL Taiwan: August 2005 City – TBA Games - World Tour Game, TBA CPL Japan: September 2005 City - Tokyo Games - World Tour Game, TBA Notes: This will be the first major gaming LAN event in the country of Japan and expects to have BYOC. CPL UK: October 2005 City – TBA Games - World Tour Game, TBA Notes: They expect to have BYOC and pre-Qualifiers with the goal of being one of the most memorable events in the UK ever. CPL Chile: November 2005 City – Santiago Games - World Tour Game, CS, TBA Notes: With BYOC of 500-1K people and pre-Qualifiers in other countries, LAN-Z will be hosting one of the largest LAN events in Chile history. CPL Championship: December 2005 City – TBA (United States) Games - World Tour Game, CS, TBA (Four Games total) Notes: Takes place at the same venue as an award show; and will be broadcast on TV during the show. Media Coverage While still hesitant to give names on the record, speaking to Angel Munoz and Scott Valencia gave us a great idea of what to expect. The CPL is going to be covered by more mainstream media for the tour. The biggest part of the coverage has to be the news of a weekly show on US cable television, on a network that “caters heavily to generation Y and high tech audiences”. Again, we have our ideas, but nothing’s confirmed yet. We’ve gotten word of several big names that will be attending for print and mainstream online news and online gaming. We’ll wait for the CPL to make their announcements, but we can be sure that the gaming community be impressed with the roster of media that is scheduled to attend the stops of the tour. Naturally, Gotfrag will be in attendance. The Final Event The world tour is ten stops that travels the globe, almost in a qualifier style system that will build up to a final event held in the United States. The final event is scheduled for December of 2005, to end the year with what aims to be the biggest event in the history of eSports. By the numbers, the World Tour 1v1 game will have a $500,000 USD prize for the final event alone. Additionally, there will be three other games played, including Counter-Strike. The event will be hosted in the same building as an awards show to be broadcast on the cable TV station that will be following the tour. One question this raises is if we are still talking about Dallas. For the lifetime of the CPL, every domestic event with the exception of one has been hosted in the Dallas, Texas area. Another big step is that the CPL has told Gotfrag that they are targeting 5 worldwide sponsors for the tour (they currently have three in NVidia, Hitachi and CompUSA). We'll have more information as it becomes available, and we also plan to have our own announcements related to the game used for the CPL World Tour. Stay tuned, this will be an exciting week! |

Also, a UK event, hurrah!
Great news.
Thanks alot.
Iam really sick of this, if the cpl was a bit closer to canada, you would see massive numbers (because going to the CPL in dallas is like a person from the UK going to Dalas), and more global media coverage -- which is kinda what they are aiming for......
Thx.
#14, since canada is a lot closer than the uk but alright, nice comparison.
I'm not sure if #15 could have posted a better comment. That was perfect.
So it's going to be followed by g4/techtv and the finals is at g4phoria or whatever it's called. Ew. Oh well still cool.
I think it's funnier that they're hosting a 1v1 in Yugoslavia but not in Russia. So sorry cooler~ lol.
I do agree they need to have a qualifier in Canada to cater to the top Canadian deathmatch players: (this space intentionally left blank)
leave it be
actually i dont know why they dont hold one in canada, like #9 said there holding one in yugoslavia, why dont the people in yugoslavia just go to the sweedish one. canada has a couple of good teams, ok literaly two but still thats more then yugoslavia. anywho great job angel, i was about to loose faith in cpl after i herd "only 1 game for big tournament" but after they decided to thow in 500,000 bucks to the cs tournament (higher then ANY year of ANY competition) im somewhat satisfied. but ones again they make some strange decisions, there holding the cs tournies in spain brazil and chilli, umm all of those places are thousands of miles away from the states, and even the spanish location is not convienent for a lot of europians. they should of put another one in NA instead of Chili.
"I do agree they need to have a qualifier in Canada to cater to the top Canadian deathmatch players: (this space intentionally left blank)"
woops, i was wrong about ck-boodah, zero4 did indeed win wcg2001
thanks.
Nerve
DeadZone
ECO
Xeno
Shockwave (i think 3 canadians)
rSgaming (13-16th place at this CPL)
iam sorry but thats like almost half of cal-i + rSgaming beat Gamewyze, Forsaken, TAU, and brought TSG to OT fyi.
canadians stop being so selfish, these events will help the economies of chile and yugoslovia. we all cant be canadian and live in a world of no homelessness and not much crime. straight outta quebec
Sponsors of the events
the CPL its self
the Gamers themselves
extremely annoying, considering they have no reason to brag
2 Counter-Strike U.S. teams in top 5. nearest Canadian team was 13-16
http://www.sk-gaming.com/coveragenews.php..
Total U.S. teams : 33
Total Canadian teams : 2
if there are sooo many canadian cal-i teams, why dont you see them at the cpl !??!?!!
ITS TOOO FAR AWAY, 2 teams won qualifers to go to the event, so they had that paid for. (rSgaming also went so, that makes 3 canadian cs teams)
even EG who has almost full sponsorship was doubting they could go but abit stepped in and helped them, Nerve on the other hand couldn't attend due to it BEING TO FAR AWAY.
see that doesn't stop the massive local TX / central teams going to the cpl, it cost them like nothing compared to us going.
and No reason to brag ??? - ok when you guys beat GoL/SK to win the CPL there was atleast 10 threads that said US > Europe or US > Sweden.
its natural to see this, get over it. even if 3D makes you eMoist, dont trash other teams / countries that beat them.
OMG MiBR > GG -- BRAZIL > FRANCE -- OMG OMG (i bet that would be a strike out if your american and french at the same time)
-edit- by to far away, i was meaning to expensive to fly out of canada - its really cheap to fly inside of it (see later post)
I live in the u.s. but not having an event in canada is pretty messed up. Better yet.. not that one has to be in canada.. but at LEAST put one so that its within a 'short' travel distance to it, not where you have to fly to get to all the way to dallas
you canadians are whinning about stupid shyt. so what if a half a dozen of your clans cross the border for a 10-20 hour car trip or a 4-6 hr plane trip? same shyt that people from the east coast and west coast have to go through.
the purpose of this tour is to blow this "sport" up! make it bigger than it's ever been and to get everyone that doesn't know squat about esports to realize what's going on and get those that might be interested to get involved. pretty much to maximize the number of players.
the stops in brazil and chile make perfect sense since there's only a total of what, 4 teams that make it to cpl that come from those two EMERGING esports nations? south america is just now on the rise and it doesn't hurt to ignite a fire down there with 2 major int'l lans. same with china and japan. korea is already huge on the topic so there is no need for a stop and besides, it neighbors china and japan (like how canada neighbors the u.s.). china has 1.8 billion people and no major int'l lans. i think it's pretty obvious that it's smart to go there.
yugoslavia is another smart choice since it's pretty much in the center of eastern europe and no major int'l lans there either. the uk doesn't have any major int'l lans and is in the center of western europe. sweden is a no brainer since that country breeds great gamers and is somewhat in the middle of the scandanavian portion of europe. spain is good to promote teams/players from africa (since it's a boat ride across the mediterranean) besides all the people that will already be coming from the rest of europe.
when you take into account the fact that there needs to be more lans in a location central to other countries and where there are a lot of gamers, or potential gamers, with no major int'l lans TO PROMOTE this "sport," who cares if canada doesn't get a stop?
i thought that was the whole point of all this csnation.net/gotfrag.com/ampednews.com and all other wesites, cpl/wcg/eswc and all other major and mid-size tournies, cal/sel and all other leagues, sponserships, tv and print media coverage, tsn, and etc., and especially THIS TOUR, was to make esports A LEGIT deal in the world. again, you're just a few hours away, so stop whining.
because if you want to promote the "sport" to some average joe that knows nothing about it, cs isn't the most exciting to watch with its slow pace. 1 vs 1 is much more exciting to spectate and would in my opinion help boost esports. they are having cs as well so there's an extra boost. it also mentioned 2 other games for the last stop so there's two extra ways to promote to people that don't know anything about esports but could be potential gamers, who could become very valuable to the community of esports.
#38
what's the difference if they had a tourney in quebec or toronto and then all the teams/players from calgary, edmonton, and vancouver had to drive/fly about the same distance that they would take to dallas. or vice versa if a tourney was in vancouver and all the heads in quebec/toronto had to go to vancouver (about the same distance there as to dallas). if you and others are talking about distance.
FFS
i didnt count but it look like this :(
no canada ... what they think?
i feel for you guys, iam in the same boat
in regards to the few numbers that make it to cpl the few times they do, that must mean there isn't a whole lot of gaming going on down under which can mean esports needs to be promoted there. and since the whole point of this tour is to promote esports, there SHOULD be a stop in OZ, which could get pacific islanders, southern asian nations, and new zealand in there as well.
are
the
most
important
country
in
the
world.
Canada is not.
Deal with it.
