PainKiller: CPL Singapore replaces canceled China stop

By: Mark Cheben - Published September 12, 2005 at 4:14 PM EDT - Writer Archive
The CPL has announced Singapore as the alternate location for the World Tour Stop planned for China. The stop will be held October 13th through the 16th at The Pandang in the heart of Singapore’s business district.
The stop was relocated due to China banning the World Tour’s 2005 game Painkiller. Singapore, the replacement stop, has long been a hub for gaming in Asia with the WCG finals being held here in the past and this coming November.

This stop starts a three week blitz of World Tour stops as the last few players who need to qualify attempt to do so and those who have already qualified jockey for higher seeds. CPL Milan, the replacement for a cancelled CPL Germany, is the following weekend (20th to the 23rd) and the final WT stop in Chile is at the end of October from the 28th to the 30th.

This fast paced schedule will be hard on the players, but should open up opportunities to players lower on the totem pole due to the strenuous traveling required to attend all three stops. While not much is known about the Singapore WT stop, the CPL plans on releasing more details shortly.

The Pandang should be "The Padang".

The location must be a mistake, because that place is a GRASS FIELD.

Yeah it's "The Padang" and CPL is building a 3,000 ft covered event in the "grass field." Stay tuned for more details.

(To #12) If what you're saying is true, it's not a very good idea. The monsoon's coming soon, and rain's gonna be bad to any sort of covered event.

#8 - you must be dumb, lan centres are abundant in Singapore and there is no lack of events in Singapore.

#6 - I think you never been to Singapore? There is even Television at our buses and wireless internet at most of the cafes and like mcdonald

#17 I noticed that pnd. I was referring to #3 that was eventually deleted.

The television in the buses is a joke anyway. The shows suck, and the signal gets interrupted like crazy, and is unwanted noise.

this is pretty insane the CPL is gonna transform a soccer / rugby field into a computer gaming field hahaha how ridiculous is that.

there are tonnes of other places in Singapore that wont require building that tent. GG when it rains, cos when it rains it pours! i've been there!

even though the Padang is in the CBD, its kinda outta the CBD. people walk past there from a distance but no one really walks past right next to it. but its near hotels and food. Oh and can you say.. PORTA LOOs? :P

#8, i think its Malaysia who has the 2 tallest buildings (or Taiwan, if u're referring to the 101 towers)

CPL could have booked Raffles, like the OIC did, or use Suntec, like WCG. Or even the space in front of Taka

The northeastern monsoon season starts in mid- November and ends in March. Our event attendees can use the country club facilities, but we will also have mobile toilet facilities for the general public.

We could have used other venues, Suntec, etc but instead we are doing things differently. "Viva La Difference"

By the way the dates are also wrong on this release the Singapore World Tour stop will take place Friday, October 14 through Sunday, October 16, 2005.

You guys should stop thinking that the Koreans and the Japanese people are the only Asians who know how to play games... To #3

Suntec requires advanced booking. CPL Singapore was a sudden event here so unlikely be able to book suntec. Padang is a good choice, but Expo could be a better option ^^. But padang is still better because of the amount of quality hotels nearby.

Just to let those coming to know, its gonna be a wet event with pre-monsoon "sudden rain".

gl hf guys

why all the fuss? if they succeed in this event, they would have gone a stage higher in handling various places for competition. its a good challenge cpl should take up more in the future. try more, learn more and improve.
