PainKiller: CPL Painkiller Tournament Summary and Conclusion

By: Jason Bass - Published December 19, 2004 at 1:04 PM EST - Writer Archive
Sunday at 3PM CST will feature the final match of this CPL. In this final we have Vo0 from the Netherlands against zyz from Germany, and a match of this caliber is sure to make for an exciting championship match.
Written by Mark “wombat” Larsen

Update: Vo0 has just beaten zyz 2-0, to win himself back to back CPL events. On Sacred the score was 14-9 and the second map was on Psycho with a score of 11-10. Winning the last 3 major LAN events is very impressive, and it will be interesting to see if he can continue his dominance during the World Tour. Vo0’s movement still remains his most important asset, and every player will undoubtedly be studying his demos to figure out how he can continue to move so fluently throughout 90% of the match. Zyz had a great tournament, coming out of nearly nowhere to make a great run for the win. More players worldwide will know more of his 25-0 win over Fatal1ty than his 2nd place finish at this event. The spectator area had a great showing again this year, with a large crowd cheering and gasping at almost every frag. Unfortunately the nice LCD screens were unable to work, so we had to settle for watching each player’s POV on the big projector screens. The TsN booth, which was located behind the spectator area, was great. It provided live commentary for all of the fans present here at the event as well as providing TVsN for the players watching from home. Hopefully by the first World Tour stop, there will be a patch released that will allow for a HLTV/GTV-like experience. Congratulations to Vo0 and zyz for giving this CPL a great finals match, as well as entertaining throughout the entire event.

After an exciting weekend full of games, the CPL Winter event is finally down to the grand final. This match will pit the #1 seeded Vo0, who is currently undefeated entering the final, against the #27 seeded zyz from SK. Many people expected to see Vo0 here, but zyz came out of left field to make it to the finals. Besides being known for his past skill in Quake, little was known of his Painkiller skills especially since he hadn’t been active prior to joining the SK squad. Although I believe zyz has the ability to beat Vo0, I don’t see him taking 4 maps against him. Either way, the excitement of this match should live up to the Vo0 vs. Fatal1ty match-up of the last CPL.

For many players participating, it wasn’t just about winning the tournament or placing top 6. Although achieving either of these would have been great, the practice and experience itself is rewarding. With a long year ahead of us playing Painkiller, this event should give everyone an idea of who the hottest players in the world are right now. The first World Tour stop is under three months away, and will hopefully be as eventful as this tournament was.

The tournament itself was full of upsets and surprises, along with the usual domination we have come to expect from Vo0. I think the biggest surprise of the tournament was gellehsak’s 5th place finish; coming into his first CPL ever against veteran players, some who have attended numerous CPL’s before, such an achievement is definitely something to be proud of. Along with his 5th place finish of course comes the free trip to Turkey in February. Gellehsak managed to fight his way through the lower bracket, winning five matches to secure his place in Turkey. There have also been some disappointments in the tournament. To name a few: Ztrider not making it out of single elimination; the whole 4K squad getting beat down, and; well known American players like cha0ticz, rix, brett and destrukt not making it very far into the tournament. I suppose these upsets could be a result of the six months that players had to practice and refine their game.

Another interesting thing about this event was the randomness of the seedings which players received. A great example of this is the #11-13 seeds, junior, nark and boxcar. While these players received great seeds, other well-known players who have been successful in other games were given terrible seeds. As a result of this, match-ups were sometimes very lopsided even late into the tournament. We saw geoff and visual-vayne advance to Round 2 of the upper bracket, while #9 seed Xhep and #16 seed 3D|brett were already knocked out of the whole tournament.

I would also like to give a shoutout to the PK admins, who ran the tournament flawlessly. Besides a few delays late in the day on Saturday, the whole tournament ran on time. There were never any problems or disputes, and the admins reminded the players every game to record their demos. Whenever a computer problem occurred, the players were allowed ample time to either fix the problem or relocate to a new computer.

Great job to all of those who competed, and good luck to the players who will be participating in the World Tour. I’m sure the CPL will be making some great announcements concerning the World Tour and the state of Painkiller tomorrow. Hopefully these changes will benefit the community, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

I still don't understand how zyz beat Fat (especially 25-0 on the first game). I watched demoes of both of them playing, and Fat easily looked like the stronger player to me. Guess I was wrong. :/

i think fatal1ty was very nervous and upset after the match against voo.and i think fat was always too confident,he thought that he was the very best player in all kind of games etc.but voo showed that this was not true

I honestly thought that gellehsak would place top 3. But when I'm slapped in the face with the reality of his past LAN experience, I realize that 5th place is even better. GGS ALL!

Gelle shows flashes of insane skill. He needs to be more consistent, and this LAN just made him that much better. After all, he did beat ZYZ by a reasonable margin (Edit: On one map).

World Tour is going to rock.

Zyz was like a blue collar player compared to fats and everyone else. He was never incredibly fancy like VoO is most of the time and Fats is half of the time...all he did was control and KEEP it. He never let anybody have anything once he got control and he just made sure he only fought the battles he could win. Nobody else had been able to get control from fats on Fallen2te the entire tourny and then hold it...except Zyz.

The 25-0 score is miss-leading for that map as most scores are generally blowouts on that map even when two great players are playing. It's just that hard to break control and Fats could do nothing against Zyz's patience. Zyz's lightning (electro driver) was also BETTER than Fat's that map too which I've hardly ever seen before. The lock Zyz had on the map was more impressive than the final score.

He also did the same thing on Sacred and he kept fats from being able to gain anything. VoO even had to run forever in the finals and if it had not been for Zyz's decision to stop playing his game and try to run the clock out with under 2 minutes to play on psycho he probably would have picked up that map. Of course it would have gone back to Sacred and pretty much nobody can touch VoO on sacred :p Was fun :p

By the way Quarter, my post on PKeuro was not directed at you when you posted this same text under the comments.

Against fat though, I think he just got control from the initial spawn. So he didn't really "get control", he just never lost it.

He's going to be one to watch out for which is good for us. Makes things a little more interesting for everybody.

I am not sure how someone with as much dueling experience as wombat could say that TsN was good. Let me quote:

"I did not expect it but you know, I kinda did."
"Final score is... something."
"On sacred it's just as important, but on psycho it's even MORE important. [item control]"
"The amount of verosity these players have." (if this is a blend of ferocity and velocity then, as a linguist, I bow to them)
"Lexer could come back and maybe get a kill or something."
"He knows where what is."
"What’s CPMA?"
“Nice shaft err uh stake.”
“You never know.
You don’t.
Exactly.”
“In most 1v1 games being against the walls tends to cause you to lose.”

And why did they start every sentence with "you know what?"

Was anyone else annoyed by the number of wow's, oh-oh's and nice's that Byte said? He managed to say 'wow' twenty-nine times in a fifteen minute match.

Oh, and one more quote:

“Best ever comeback in... wow.”

carmac, due to there being no sound for spectators during the finals match, the TsN booth was a great filler. I don't know how great their quality was throughout the entire event, but I know it would have been better if they had their main PK shoutcasters there (few of them got banned from this CPL). Writing and spectating from the event, I can say with confidence that noone there was counting how many times he say "ooh" or "wow." I think they did a great job given what they had to work with. I can only imagine how tiring and difficult it is to constantly be broadcasting matches for nearly 4 days.

Carmac, I agree to an extent. I'm just thankful to have SOMEBODY telling me whats up. So I have a hard time biting the hand that feeds right now, but you're right. Have you given them feedback?

Why the hell did they NOT send their proper shoutcasters to the event? That's supposed to be the game of 2005, right? And their knowledge of the players was limited purely to one-two sentences they picked up about each player from someone at the event (at least that is what it sounded like). On top of that I got the impression that they were not really familiar with what the hell control is and what dueling is about. That is what I call no homework, and that's plain amateur - knowing what kind of event they're going to attend they should have prepared.

While I am not judging their performance in CS, I think next time the CPL should get someone who knows what they're doing for PK.
