Extreme Masters is the brain child of ESL. Built on the back of their successful EPS leagues, the Extreme Masters online tournament is a three stage tournament to decide who the best Warcraft III player is and which Counter Strike team is the best. Over six month 48 teams and players will be whittled down to the final eight. These eight CS teams and eight Warcraft players will meet at CeBIT 2007 to contest 160,000 Euro (about 205,000 USD) in prize money.
The tournament is a cross between an Olympic style event and a first come first serve event. This gives teams and players from Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Belarus a shot at the title but still makes sure that the elite teams and players are well represented.
The tournament works as follows: Players and teams from across Europe will play in national qualifiers to determine who will participate in the Extreme Masters tournament. Twelve teams will qualify directly into the final round, round three, twelve will qualify into the second round and twenty four will qualify for the opening round. Twelve teams or players will advance from round one to round two and twelve teams or players will advance from round two to round three. The top eight in the final round will advance to the LAN finals.
