True Thread Title: Forming A Team (For All The Right Reasons)
Hello GotFrag Community.
Over the past 13+ years I have been gaming, I have played some absolutely tremendous teams. The legendary Digital Jedi, Ministry of Pain, BraveHeart, Mercenaries Clan, Nexus(etf). I've also had the misfortune of playing on some bad teams. Not bad skill-wise, but teams with players w/ bad attitudes. A team can really only be judged in the face of defeat. I've seen teams ragequit after a bad loss, and break up over it. Weak built teams. Teams that are so fragile that a loss can break them apart. I saw it as recently as this past month. My team Rockstar* (formelly Impulse6) broke up while I was on vacation. The reason? A bad loss, a forfeit loss, and some ego's.
I think I'm just about done with all of the crap. I'm 28 now. I come online at night to have fun. I want to build a team from the ground up with players who feel the same way I do. For people to have a team they can really look forward to playing with. A team that is honerable, competitive, funny, dedicated, and most of all a team with a consistent positive attitude, through good times and bad.
So this is a recruitment thread for those not paying attention =P. Before I go into things in more detail....Let me head off a couple of replies I know are coming:
Reply#1: "Well rental, my team is just like the one you describe.... Those teams still exist out there." My response: Awesome. Congrats. I am legitamately happy for you. I wish you and your team the best.
Reply#2: "You stink, rental." My response: Thanks. I'm confident in my abilities. I don't need validation.
Reply #3: [Random negativeness.] My response: My plan with this post is to attract like minded people. If anyone wants to take a negative spin on it... that is their right. I played sports when i was younger. 12 years baseball, 9 years football, hockey, soccer. I love competition. It's fun. Now that I am older with a kid (and another due in September), I can no longer go out and play sports like I used to. I get that fulfillment now from online games, such as TF2. I love Team Fortress. I have since 1996. It's my favorite hobby. It's deep and rewarding.
Basically what I'm saying is... Can't we all leave the Hatorade in the fridge for once? I think this community as a whole needs more positivity. We all play the same game. We all play it for fun.
Team Ideals: 1- Positive Attitude. This one is the most important by far. Bottom line is… we all play this game to have fun. Win, lose, or draw. In my mind, winning is fun, but the best scrims/matches I’ve played in are the close ones. The ones where it’s 4-4 and that 9th round goes long and it’s back and forth. THAT is fun. But at the end of the day, it all boils down to the guys (or gals) that you are playing with. I’ve been on teams where I really enjoyed talking with everyone, TF2-related or not, and it was a pleasure to idle vent with everyone. I’ve also been on teams where people take things way to seriously and get down on other players, etc. I want to create an environment where no team member is going to take off anyone else’s head for doing something incorrectly on the field. If there is an issue, it will be discussed AFTER the scrim/match is over so that it does not detract from the game itself. Discussing issues/differences in strategy will be done in a positive manner. Wrong way: OMG YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE POPPED UBER SO EARLY! WTF WERE YOU THINKING? Right way: Next time, try to wait until we are at X or until you have taken some form of damage before ubering… this will allow us to … xyz.
Wrong way: WHY WERE YOU DOING XYZ? YOU STINK. PLAYER ABC IS BETTER THAN YOU. Right way: In that part of the scrim when you were doing XYZ, could you kindly explain your rational there? Oh it was because you were trying to ______. I understand why you thought doing that was the best course of action, but by doing so, you left ____ open to attack. Next time, please ______ instead.
understand that there are over the top examples, but I want to drive the point that this team will be about CONTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, and not just bashing. Everyone on the team will be of high skill, so if someone does something, they think at the time it’s what’s best. There can be up to 20+ strats for any given map (attacking mid, defending CP2, building uber/changing classes when attacking last, etc).. it’s impossible for a NEW team to have every player doing what they should be doing at every stage. This comes with time and experience. Too many times I’ve seen players getting down on other players just because there was miscommunication about the strategy.
Players will also be very cordial to other teams. I want this squad to be a team that other teams WANT to scrim against. You will need to present yourself in a manner that represents the team in a positive light.
No rage quitting. A loss is sometimes a good thing. What did they do right? What did we do wrong? It’s this analysis that really helps a team grow. This will be done after every scrim to help strengthen the team.
Bottom line: This team will be a family-type atmosphere. We will HELP each other and build each other up and put each other in situations where we can accel.
Absolutely no EGO’s. This is really the tricky part. Everyone has an ego. Everyone’s ego comes out in competitive atmospheres. It’s the challenge of the players to keep this in check. EGO’s kill teams. It’s great to be competitive, but at a certain point, you have to keep it in check.
2- Competitiveness. You have to have a fair amount of gaming experience. This will be judged on a case-by-case basis, but as a general rule, I’m not looking for anyone who hasn’t competed in CEVO or ESEA or extensive TWL/STA. This won’t be a training ground. I expect that anyone who applies knows general strats on each of the main maps and can follow direction without things having to be explained. You’e competitiveness cannot come at the expense of #1. =)
3- Communication. This is key. Players will need to communicate VERY WELL in game. Short, quick, to the point comms. Terms like ‘zerg’, choke, Z, connector. We will even explore scouts using a second ventrillo/mumble for communications between just those two parties (in addition to the full team voicechat). It’s something I used in previous teams and it’s very effective. You have your scouts communicating non-stop without disrupting all 6 men. Comms will be a big part of our game. We will also hold practices and dry runs. We will join empty servers and go over strats before scrims start. Too many teams leave this out and I feel it’s a mistake.
4- Honor and Respect - For your clan mates as well as the community as a whole. This is pretty self explanitory.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Drop me a line on steam if you are interested. I don't think I posted this (starting writing this earlier today at work) but I am looking to get this team formed and ready to go in time for s4 of CEVO. Other leagues will be discussed as the team takes shape.
I hope that even those who already have a team can get something out of this post. I think the central theme is easy to pick out.
