All Games: Asian Invasion?

By: Michael Lau - Published February 04, 2006 at 6:19 PM EST - Writer Archive
Let me tell you of some inside secret of Chinese e-sports and the government. I will refrain from using names as it’s not necessary.

The top Counter-Strike team in China is owned by a woman that fully funds and sponsors the team with the assets she receives from her mobile telecommunication company.
Prior to this year, this team rarely attended international tournaments due to the owner's unwillingness to fund the transportation to places out of China.
However, recently she noticed that the Chinese government was taking an interest in e-sports; therefore, in order to make herself stand out and in order for her to improve her mobile telecommunication company, she supported the team by letting them attend international events.

In China, to run a successful local business, you almost always need government support. Your business will offer the government certain benefits and in return they provide you an easier route to take in running a successful business. Some call this corruption; in China they call it Business.

With the Chinese government finally having their eyes on E-sports, expect more teams to begin attending International events and becoming fully sponsored.

As other countries in Asia slowly realize the potential within E-Sports gaming, many teams should then become fully funded and able to attend international tournaments. Globalization is the sole reason why Asian countries are beginning to become aware of the gaming scene. As their cultures morph around this concept and as their businesses try to expand globally, more Asian teams should emerge onto the gaming scene.

Who knows how they will do, but from what we see already, they aren’t just going to join the scene peacefully. They will try to invade it.
