All Games: Baka Airways - First Stop: Hong Kong

By: Michael Lau - Published February 08, 2006 at 3:54 AM EST - Writer Archive
After introducing this series in the article "Asian Invasion", Michael "baka" Lau presents us with his first installment of the series Baka Airways. This series will take users on a flight throughout many of the Asian countries and

Ladies and Gentlemen, the cabin crew and I are honored to have you all on board Baka Airways as we tour the many countries of Asia to witness first hand the eSports and Counter-Strike scene that the area has to offer.

Our first stop will be my home town of Hong Kong, around a 17 hour flight from New York City. So, sit back and relax as we take off. Oh... and we dont have emergency exits on this flight...

About Hong Kong -

Typical Friday night happy hour
Originally colonized by Britain, Hong Kong is now a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China under a 'One Country, Two System Ruling'. Although a part of the PRC, Hong Kong follows its own set of free trade economy and legislative law.

First settled as an entreport village due to its harbour, Hong Kong continued to grow to become one of the most culturally mixed and economically prosperous cities in the world. The harbour is now simply a tourist attraction, one of the most magnificent displays of neon lights that can be found the world over.

This is the place to be where the East meets West. Hong Kong has enough towering urbanity, electric streetscapes, enigmatic temples, commercial fervour and cultural idiosyncrasies to utterly swamp the senses of a visitor, and enough spontaneous, unexpected possibilities to make a complete mockery of any attempt at a strictly organised itinerary. The 'City of Life' is a city of night. Most hot in-town venues don't even get going until midnight, and the pace at night is more frantic than by day.

Nice! I visit my grandparents every summer in HK. The CS LAN scene is not so great in HK.

Edit: Has anyone ever flown into the OLD Hong Kong airport? SO SCARY when landing. The new one is very awesome though.

Crazy, I thought hong kong would harbor more pro cs players than the mainland judging its western life style and more computer access. Seems like the whole top 10 china comes from the mainland.

Good write up, though there are some info that I don't really agree on,

Top 5 CS teams of all time, !nfinity and iCHOR should be called iCHOR infinity, as they combined when I flew back to HK and eP should be rated above Babo imho.

Top 5 CS players of all time, since there's no doubt PPV is one of the best player around in macau and HK, but he's not from Hong Kong, so I'm not sure if he should be there (I <3 ppv btw). Wingy and Raver stopped playing since 2002 or something, never seen him play since I was back to HK back in early 2003 and Raver was never a professional gamer as he never gets paid to play, pretty outdated and in-accrate if you ask me, and where is nick/fred/linx etc, I'd say they're one of the best at all time.

Hong Kong is awesome. Everyone there drives a Mercedes (since there are not tariffs), nice clothes were about $1 U.S. each (per shirt, pants, etc), and there's lots of cheap, tasty, authentic Chinese food on every street. I had a lot of fun there.

Nice writeup, #5 I used to fly very often into the old airport, when comming in by sea, when you stopped, you were already at your terminal. When coming in by land, you would fly so low over the roof tops, you could see in and watch tv in the apartments.

And the food... Ah such good things to eat on the street.

#11

CoreFighter... It's the best player of _all_ time, during their prime. Wingy was undoubtly the best awper during the !nfinity days as well as Raver being the best during his days.

!nfinity was never iCHOR. When !nfinity changed to iCHOR, ChuT and Wingy had already left the game and you joined with PPV. It was another era.

As for fred/linx/nick being the best of all time? Maybe of this time... but no.
