All Games: First Look at ESWC 2006

By: David Light - Published February 12, 2006 at 7:55 AM EST - Writer Archive
GotFrag brings you a short look at ESWC 2006 as new photos and information finds its way through the news wire.

When we last saw ESWC compLexity took everyone by "storm", walking away with the first place prize of $40,000. Today, we have new pictures and information of the 2006 event to be held in The Palais Omnisports of Parics Bercy located in Paris, France from June 29th to the second of July. The four day long competition will have more than enough room for spectators, with seating for over 15,000 attendees. Over 800 competitors will compete in the event from 53 different countries.

"The 2006 ESWC Grand Final will again push back the frontiers of electronic sports. The main goal has always been to take video game competition to the level of a worldwide sport and an event for all. In 2006, ESWC is aiming bigger and higher than ever before and asserting its international leadership."

The self proclaimed "Greatest sports project of the 21st century" has also released the event schedule for the event, as well as some tidbits of interesting information and 3D images of the layout.

Information
15,000 seating capacity for attendees simultaneously
5 amazing stages dedicated to the ESWC official disciplines
1 central stage designed for face-to-face teams games
7 large screens, a giant 250m2 screen and dozens of plasma screens to display matches live
3000 m2 of installations and high technologies for the 800 champions from 53 countries and all the international media

Event Schedule
28 June: Arrival and registration
29 June: Training Day / Media Presentation / Opening Ceremony
30 June: 1st day of ESWC 2006 Competition
1 July: 2nd day of ESWC 2006 Competition
2 July: 3rd day of ESWC 2006 Competition / Closing Party

Now for what you've been waiting for, your first glimpse inside of ESWC 2006, located in The Palais Omnisports of Paric Bercy (one of the main indoor sporting Arenas in Europe).

"The ESWC Organizing Committee is proud to present the first pictures of the stage and main hall event design."

“Nothing is down to chance in electronic sports. It is all a matter of reflexes, psychology, training, and the ability to merge into a digital world and feel its force. We apply those rules in everything we give to the ESWC”, said Matthieu Dallon, President of Games-Services and founder of the ESWC.

You can expect GotFrag to have full coverage of ESWC 2006, so don't worry! Last year we covered both CPL Summer 2005 and ESWC 2005 at the same time due to a conflict between event dates. With the CPL's announcement of Summer 06 to take place between July 5th through 9th, you can rest assured that you will be able to catch every game here on GotFrag without having to worry about managing which event to watch!

look at that center stage and the huge screen. if its a final, it will definitely be screened on the huge screen. and maybe the players can easily turn their head and check out where their enemies are. lol.

but this setup really owns everything.
im a good boy.

Nah i think the huge screen is only for the 1v1 games that will be played, and the huge screens right above there heads have the CS matches on them.. and obviously there will be a judge watching for someone looking straight in the sky.

Wow thats awesome. Almost makes me want to take the short trip across the channel... I've never been to Paris anyway...

I imagine the square blue stage in the middle would be for the big cs matches (and finals). The povs would be shown on the small screens right behind each player. Makes sense.

The more I think about it, the more I think CPL should have something along the same line. But then again I reckon theres probably more people up for spectating who are within travelling distance from Paris than Dallas.

Viva Matthieu Dallon and all the staff of Ligarena. This just goes to show how much better ESWC is then CPL. Paris Bercy vs Conference Room, easy choice for me and most everyone.

I'm glad I'll be there !

Hmm i wonder what teams will try to make it to ESWC and CPL, i guess if you win the qualifier for ESWC they pay for your trip, however if you're planning on CPL you might get pretty burned out with all that traveling. Also, the prize money for CPL is more.

#24 In terms of the setup I agree, but I don't think the tournament can ever be as good as CPL. Free trips to the event is all good and well for lower tier teams, but the fact is pretty much all the top teams in the world now have the sponsors to get to the big events. I think the limit on the teams that can attend (ie. only 2 Swedish teams when they have SK.swe, NiP, fnatic and more, all title contenders) limits the potential of the tournament a little. Also single elimination for the final stages makes it suck if the two best teams meet in the semi finals.

#28 The prize money is a lot for both, so I imagine most of the top teams will make it to both (they always used to so theres no reason why they can't this year).

The best would bee 3map double elimination, but that hade taken time so if you had it on weg, and weg lasted only 2 weeks, the tournument would be almost perfect!
