All Games: Angel speaks on the WSVG CPL partnership

Following the announcement of a partnership between the CPL and WSVG Angel Munoz of the CPL took the time to answer a few questions.

Angel got in touch to say "After seeing the posted interview and some of the posted comments, I realized my responses weren't clear enough, and I wanted to provide greater clarification for the community." Updated interview follows:

Can you tell us anymore about the partnership with WSVG? Will it extend beyond Summer CPL or is it just for one event?

Before I answer that I think we should clarify what’s currently going on in e-sports. Since the finals of the CPL World Tour last year there has been a lot of changes and there’s a lot of interest from television media. As our sport continues to change I think it’s time for cooperation between the different global e-sport organizations.

With that in mind we co-created a partnership with Games Media Properties as it refers to their World Series of Video Games. The partnership that we've established is for the summer event although it could extend beyond just this summer event -- which is the largest of our global events.

So the partnership is just going to be 1 event per their world series? The WSVG’s world series will not have anything to do with the CPL World Tour other than the summer events?

We are not holding a World Tour this year. Instead we recommend that the community looks at the WSVG as a great alternative and our partnership with them as a merger of concepts and a united vision for the sport. These are not times for organizations to duplicate the efforts others, but a great time to cooperate while remaining distinct.

I want to shift gears and focus on CPL Summer. The prize money has been cut in half from what was previously announced, do you think that will cause any issues with the community?

I think that before people react to the cash prizes, which are still large in my opinion, they probably should wait until other announcements are released about the summer event. The WSVG has already announced that they're giving away a million dollars in cash prizes, so I do not think there should be any worries.

Will people that are already signed up for the CPL summer event have a chance to change their mind now that the prize money has changed?

If competitors wanted to attend exclusively because of the previously announced cash prizes (without consideration of what this event could signify for the sport and their careers) then CPL will gladly offer them a refund.

The press release indicates "Additional cash prize tournaments will expand the field of competition". Are we still going to see the same side tournaments that were expected at CPL Summer? Will some tournaments be removed, some added?

That is a question best answered by Games Media Properties.

So you would say the summer event will have a strong influence on console gaming as well as PC gaming, not just 1 big focus on Counter-Strike and Quake4?

I would think so.

The press release indicates the convention area will be expanded; what can we expect to fill the new space -- more sponsorship booths, bigger BYOC, etc? Do you have an exact layout or this company will be attending with a booth, etc?

The event has radically been changed but it is best to ask Games Media Properties for more details.

I'm excited about this new partnership and I think it will raise the profile of video game competitions while bringing a new level of professionalism and organization to the sport.
