All Games: ESWC nominations process

By: Lee Chen - Published May 19, 2006 at 6:15 PM EDT - Writer Archive
As ESWC announced on Thursday, GotFrag has been asked to provide some input into their selection process for the USA attendees to ESWC 2006. In order to provide as complete and informed input as possible, GotFrag will be working with the top experts and community websites in each respective game.
With the application process underway, GotFrag will be coordinating with other community sites, leading experts and the communities themselves to select a players and teams to attend. Obviously, since the invitees will not be decided by actual qualification, the goal of this process is to find the best among those available to attend.

The actual process will work in a three stage process. First, GotFrag will be speaking with respected Community members in each game to collect a “short list” of possible candidates from the applicants. GotFrag will then speak to these selected applicants to ensure that they are actually able to attend and pay for their own plane ticket.

At this point, GotFrag will submit a vote to the community, leading experts and to players on the list. Both WCReplays.com for WC3 and ESReality for Q4 have already agreed to conduct polls on their websites for the applicants and we will be speaking with others moving forward. The Counter-Strike 1.6 polls will be conducted at GotFrag.com.

The leading experts include representatives from WCReplays.com, ESReality.com, Radio iTG, GotFrag.com, and several other leading media organizations in e-sports. In addition, several players who are unable to attend ESWC 2006 will contribute their votes.

The community will vote on the “short list” of players, accounting for 1/3 of the total, overall vote. The other 1/3 will come from the respected experts in the community and the final 1/3 coming from the players on the “short list”. The short list players will be asked to give their top selections not including themselves. This gives equal weight to input from everyone involved.

When the process is finished GotFrag will submit the findings to ESWC for their evaluation and selection of the invites. The entire process will be private and for final review by Game-Services, the producers of ESWC 2006. Please note that the final decision is Game-Services.

All parties involved in this process feel that this is the best solution for an unfortunate situation and we encourage everyone to participate in selecting this year’s ESWC 2006 attendees.

Please stay tuned to this announcement for where to cast your vote and other updates.

#5 Let's be honest here. It's not so easy to just find a website in the US with experts on the competition. in Trackmania, Gran Turismo 4, and Pro Evolution Soccer. Don't be so quick to jump the gun there... I'm sure the people involved will do the best they can do find the appropriate people.

The process that has been conceived is quite reasonable in my opinion.

#5, Note the part where we said, and I quote for your edification:

"Both WCReplays.com for WC3 and ESReality for Q4 have already agreed to conduct polls on their websites for the applicants and we will be speaking with others moving forward. "

I'll make it more specific for you next time around. But "others" in this case means GT4, Trackmania, Pro Evo soccor.

#9 Good luck finding the experts, no sarcasm intended. My biggest gripe is that if theres still time to find 'experts' in 6 games why isnt there time to hold a qualifier?

#7 If you honestly believe the process that was made is reasonable your a dolt. You know what, your not. Lets apply this process to ALL selective events from here on in. Sound good, figured youd like that. The only people getting screwed here is the people who had no say in anything at all. The Players.

#10, We already found the experts, excepting GT4, Pro-Evo Soccor and Trackmania, you'll note that we list off where some of them are coming from.

Holding and running a qualifier costs time, manpower and resources. Where do you suggest we pull all of that together for 6 different games? None of the media groups involved run tournaments. That's not what we do. And any other organizing body would have to license things from ESWC. Moreover, There's less than 45 days left before ESWC kicks off.

Given that people are supposed to buy their own plane tickets, arrange their schedules etc, and that air fare (which is already at $1200 on average round-trip to Paris), would you really like us to delay the selection process another 15-30days while we try to run qualifiers which we have no expertise in? Say we did that, now the winners from 6 different games, are going to have to pay 1500-1800 each to get there. Maybe more if it stretches out even farther.

The situation sucks. No one likes it. Not us at GotFrag. Not ESWC. Not GGL. Not any of the players. This is the best option available to us. Us meaning all the pro-gamers, the US fans and media organizations that would really love to have US teams and players at the event. How about you give us a little credit for trying to help out.

Oh, and one other thing. In case you missed it, the Players DO get a voice in this process. 1/3 of the votes come from them. They just can't vote for themselves. And players that have already told us they can't make it, they get a vote too as an expert.

Theres 39 days left. Thats about 5.5 weeks. If a live qualifier isnt possible why not at least an online qualifier? Unfortunatly for Gt4, which has no online mode and im unsure of PES5, they have to be autoberthed as long as it has been deemed impossible to hold a live event. Honeslty, I think if some people worked togehter well and bent a few rules, maybe sacrificed something for the good of competition I think it's still perfectly possible to hold a live qualifier. The time required to organize a place, time, and setup couldn't be nearly as bad as its made out to be seeing as a person can call up an gaming cafe and organize their own lanparty for their birthday or something to that extent. Granted this is no birthday party but it still falls under the use of a cyber cafe. Ive been to qualifiers for other games/events that used a cybercafe with no problems at all. Actually they got quite a bit of media attention as well. I think if a few people sat down, worked out some details a LAN qualifier 2 weeks from now could be held to determine who goes.

#16 - GhostOutlaw, I appreciate that you're trying to help here, but what you're proposing takes more time and money than we have. Not to mention, we're not experts at running qualifiers. We cover them. We fully recognize that it takes expertise to do it, not to mention careful planning, to measure up to the high standards everyone has today for LAN events.

Think about what you're asking there. A LAN qualifier means people shelling out 300-500$ per person to get to the event, stay the 2-3 days for it. Then, IF THEY WIN, they have to shell out another 1500-1800 to go. You're basically proposing something which only sponsored teams/players can afford.

I don't like it any better than you do, but I applaud that everyone is banding together to help out with the solution which we've proposed.

#9: The problem with the community voting part is ESR is a huge european website... and you are trying to get people to vote for who they think should go (which is really just a popularity contest anyways). So the euros on the site won't vote for socrates or cha0ticz or cl0ck, 3 players who could arguably all go. Instead, they'll vote for UnnamedPlayer1 and UnnamedPlayer2 who might be good but aren't the best the US has to offer.

Since it only counts for 1/3rd everything should work out.

Judging by past results, both online and International Lan events, id have to say that its going to be united5 and 3D. U5 picked up the 3 strongest members from the JmC team that placed 4th and 3rd respectivly @ CPL. JMC and ZEX have still yet to prove to anyone that they are ready for such international tournament, head to head u5 takes the lead and well with the core of (Zid,ahlberg, royal) playing amazingly well together i see united5 representing the UnitedStates very well even tho im still gonna cheer on my korean boyZ :D
