All Games: Dell partners with WSVG

By: Mark Cheben - Published June 29, 2006 at 6:05 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Dell has joined the World Series of Video Games as an official sponsor.
As part of the sponsorship agreement the Quake 4 tournament will be played on XPS M1710 laptop systems and the WSVG will “begin to feature gameplay on Dell plasma TVs and Dell UltraSharp LCD displays.” In addition, Michael Dell, chairman of Dell, will be on hand to present over $225,000 in cash and prizes to the Intel Summer Championship winners and discuss gaming with the victors.

“We welcome Dell as an official sponsor, and look forward to Michael Dell joining us at the upcoming event,” said Matt Ringel, CEO and President of Games Media Properties. “The Dell XPS lineup is synonymous with superb quality and performance and Dell’s participation in the World Series of Video Games is a great development for the entire gaming community.”

Dell will be on site displaying Dell’s latest XPS machines and holding a “Performance Shootout.” The Performance Shootout is a contest where the fastest machine benchmarked by the Dell engineers wins a 30-inch Dell UltraSharp 30007WFP Widescreen Digital Flat-Panel Monitor.

Dude I'm getting a Dell, not, I'm going to buy a Macbook Pro and run Bootcamp on it because the Dell laptops are fugly.

Anyway, I think this will be pretty bad for the gamers. Most of these guys are use to 19' monitors with high refresh rates, but a 17'(I'm guessing 17 is the max) and slow refresh? I don't know, I've heard good things about LCD's lately, but I'm not sure many of the gamers will like or can even play well with the change.

----
Dell does have good deals for prebuilt PC's and their laptops are very nice as well. Maybe not enough options for the hardware in the PC, but cheap. I've heard a rumor that they will soon sell barebone PC's o_O, maybe that will change some minds on Dell.

dell sponsorship would be good if they did not tie in their devices - q4 on laptops ? wtf

good counter #20 but lcdz? xps ofcourse however sometimes corps try to pull stuff over on the consumer thinking they don't know doodle. xps is an outrage for a rig imo. if they keep selling to the upper-class thats all fine n dandy but what about the poo fans man =)

Q4 runs fine on an XPS, the prize money is more than enough reason for people to be satisfied. I doubt Dell would embarrass themselves with lackluster systems.

#20 It's not really the performance it's the:

17" Wide-Aspect UltraSharpTM TFT Active Matrix WUXGA (1920x1200) display with TrueLifeTM

or am I reading this wrong? Are they going to have seperate monitors?

A laptop is basically just a shuttle system in terms of how powerful they are. Still going to have it's own monitor and have people plugging their own keyboard and mouse. So what's the big deal here?

The XPS laptops are insane. They will hook normal monitors and periphs up the Laptops. They will be no different than hooking into a normal tower. One of my players currently does that with his XPS and we've had zero issues. In the past, laptops of the XPS's insanity levels have had problems overheating, but the XPS laptops are flawless for gaming.

Michael Dell personally being at the Championship in Dallas is a bigger deal than of you realize. Dell is a major player in our sector now with this sponsorship and their purchase of the Alienware brand.

I for one am just as excited at the chance to meet Michael Dell as I am at the prize pool for first place. If the team wins, they get their cash, but I get to meet him and talk business.

Great move WSVG!

This is incredible news for gaming. The more corporate leaders that support our sport the better.

Also, if you think the XPS laptops can't handle Q4 then you've never used one. They're probably more powerful than 95% of the desktops we all use to game.

Good move all around.

dell is fine ....but the fact that their hosting it on laptops is a downside , just becuase its very different playing on a laptop then a desktop [other then performance wise]

i think they should have done that with their desktop XPS line..instead of laptop but W.E ...wsvg is a complete joke anyways

and #8 , cpl owns wsvg...so yea......

Dell= Bad
WSVG= Bad

Seems to be a perfect fit then.

people are too cynical. this will probably be a great tournament and Dell's sponsorship is just what esports needs to get off the ground. Michael Dell is probably a closet gamer or something :D. anyway, as long as the laptops are using separate CRT monitors that would work out, but it still seems a little crazy. The coolest part is that Michael Dell plans to talk to the winning team about gaming; this will give a great forum between sponsors and players. too bad it'll probably be wNv or NiP or fNatic winning though :D
My name is a joke on you guys :D

For everyone saying "Dell is terrible" look at the spec's of the laptops (and the desktops in the XPS line). They're amazing machines for gaming. I'm saving up for an M1710, myself.

someone needs to build an LCD that looks great at 800 x 600 and ill be happy.
Its a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake.

Was I the only one to notice that AMD is the lead sponsor of The CPL while Dell is providing Intel based laptops?
