All Games: CEVO chooses new direction without TsN

By: Jason Bass - Published September 12, 2006 at 8:44 PM EDT - Writer Archive
GotFrag sits down with Cevo's Wayne Ferguson and TsN's Hunter Luisi and takes a closer look at the split between these two organizations.

Earlier this year TsN and CEVO announced an exclusive arrangement that allowed for TsN to shoutcast all CEVO divisions. This was a big announcement for both TsN and CEVO. It solidified constant exposure for CEVO and formed a strategic relationship for TsN as well as gave TsN a consistent base of content. Early this morning a post was made on the TsN website announcing the dissolution of this agreement. There was not much said but an email from CEVO was posted in the piece. The contents of that post can be found below:

The original news post can be found on the TsN Site

After signing an exclusive agreement with TsN, and after almost a year of doing nothing but CEVO, it seems CEVO has decided to break their agreement with us. (see email below). Feel free to let CEVO|Ferguson know your thoughts on this. You can email him at wferguson@cevolved.com or message him on IRC.

gg us

If you don't know how much CEVO we do? Just look at our ondemand system or count the cevo logos on our front page.

--------------

Unfortunately, we feel that the relationship between Team Sportscast Network and CEVO has deteriorated to the point that we do not consider it effective to continue negotiations at this time. Effective immediately, TsN no longer has our consent to cover CEVO-generated content. This will remain in effect until further notice.

We thank you for your efforts over the past year and a half, and wish you the best with your future endeavors.

If you have comments, you may email us at executives@cevolved.com

This announcement tells very little and so GotFrag wanted to find out what actually happened. We gave both TsN and CEVO the chance to answer some questions on what took place as well as the events that lead to this break up of sorts.

An interview with CEVO can be found on the next page and an Interview with TsN on the 3rd page.

Why do you think so many of their top casters have left?

TSN exec's dont know how to treat their people well. Despite what everyone thinks casting is very tough and often done on ZERO delay which means any mistakes made are out there right away.

Best of luck to both parties.

Anyone can check the content on demand system at TsN to see that coverage of CEVO was plentiful, to say that my higher ups at TsN dont know how to treat staff is a misinformed to say the least. We were the first to cover expenses, we were also the first to pay boradcasts a fee for broadcasting events. I know how much coverage we did for CEVO because I was a large part of said coverage. In the space of one week I did 18 broadcasts. Talent leaves organisations all over eSports most of our talent left because of personal reasons.

Anyway I wish everyone at CEVO the best of luck with their future endevors I'm not speaking for TsN as a whole but I know we have plenty of other things in the pipeline and this while a set back is only a temporary set back.

#3 is right, casting, announcing, commentary, its all incredibly hard- you have to be very familiar with your material, a quick thinker, good speeker, informative yet interesting, charismatic yet credible

TsN's loss is someone else's gain. Releasing his e-mail and encouraging people to spam his inbox was obviously quite unprofessional.

Not from our stand point, we wanted to inform our viewers of the situation and give them a way to contact CEVO which we did. We are hardly just going to ignore the situation.

Touche Gotfrag for posting this. Touche. I mean I understand reporting and everything, but this has a bad taste of trying to smear competition. I know you are just reporting news, and got both sides (bravo), but that doesn't change it dramatically.

To TsN/Cevo...This was way premature in the first place. Cevo, you are not the NFL. TsN, you guys are not NBC. This is a bunch of people organizing video games. Yeah money is involved, but it is no where near the point where business actually have to fight for everything.

Overall, people are still getting way ahead of themselves. I wish people took a step back and looked at it from an outsiders perspective. You guys are all still living in esport world, need to get back into the real world and see how little there is actually done in terms of making this a sport.

Oh and all you gotfrag kiddies who say some stupid remark to me...Go for it, I won't even read what you write. I've moved on :)

Letting the community know is one thing, but telling someone to email/IRC and "complain" to CEVO and airing the email itself isn't the way to handle a professional business relationship. You could have made a statement of the business relationship being over without all that.

Also stupid comments like "gg us" could have been left out. Seems to me you jumped the gun and acted childish towards a serious business situation. If you act abruptly like that you deserve what you get.

Just seems to me you are playing the roll of the victim first so the community can get on your side and you can pester CEVO into bringing back the original deal. Instead of doing that maybe since you were in talks with CEVO about this situation for awhile now you should have taken some of the suggestions they had for improving coverage and content? :/

TSN peaked in RTCW when Warwitch and Wonderdog casted side by side, with trilian doing interviews - Since then, Wheat, Tosspot and RedEye of ItG have pretty much taken the spot light in the world of action game casting.

I dont follow CS:zzzzz, its a bit too slow for me still - mainly talking about the Quakes

GL to TSN though, they're old school

Releasing the e-mail to the public was a bit immature but nonetheless cevo is making a bigger mistake telling the biggest broadcasting company there is for e-sports to f off... bad move cevo.

stoners? lfmao. didn't remember hiring stoners at EGLN.... anyway, CEVO has asked us to cover CEVO css Amateur as well as cs 1.6 via live video coverage. We haven't been assigned a cs 1.6 division as of yet, but we have been informed by CEVO|Ferguson that we'll be doing 1.6.

If your new to EGLN (Electronic Gaming Live Networks), please visit us at http://www.egln.net #egln

Thanks and best of luck to TsN as well as CEVO.

TsN deserves this and more for the pressure put on CEVO when HiDef tried to cast matches. It's been known for some time that the only reason TsN is still around is due to locking down exclusivity contracts which protected them from other companies who advanced coverage of E-Sports with better technology, better staff and better talent. Good show Charlie!

haha i was just jokin shaunzy i very much enjoy watching egln matchs but i swear once or twice someone was laughing a bit to hard : P. Anways The point im trying to make is TsN was a very good start but they went down hill and the only matchs i can stand to watch them cast are quake matchs (bf2 matchs were also good but i havent seen them do one in a while) because of a few select casters who are kool. And to #26 ill care about my spelling and grammer at school or work but i realy dont care about how bad u think my grammer is on gotfrag kanx

#12 How about you stick to what you actually know about? This story was brought to me directly by Hunter and both sides were given their say and it was a completely straight report no opinions were drawn from this piece what so ever. So to call this smearing the competition is ridiculous.
