All Games: Baka Airways - Third Stop: Singapore

By: Michael Lau - Published October 31, 2006 at 10:54 PM EST - Writer Archive
Michael "Baka" Lau's traveling series continues with an examination of Singapore.

Captain Baka’s back! And this time Baka Airways is taking everyone on a tour to Singapore to look at the e-sports scene in this relatively small country. I hope everyone enjoyed our last few trips to Taiwan and Hong Kong.

So, sit back and relax as I take everyone on a wonderful journey to look at one of the richest countries in the world.

About Singapore

Singapore or Lion City (in Malay) was first exposed to the world in 1819 when the British invaded and made it a colony until 1959, when it finally became an independent country. Much of Singapore’s early wealth was due to its ideal location as an port. Similarly to Hong Kong, it served as a vital link between East and West traders.

Its modern wealth is credited towards tourism, which brings in a huge percentage of the country’s revenue.

If anything, the Lion City is an astonishing mélange of culture that borders distinction and indulgence. Tourists travel from all parts of the world to experience the huge variety of international cuisines; blindfolded and they can still smell the aroma of edible excellence.

A land where the East fuses with the West, expect nothing less than a trip well spent in one of the world’s cleanest cities (literally).

The West...

Fuses with the East…

When I lived in Singapore as an expat that's where I picked up the game. The game was HUGE there from the very beginning. There are LAN centers on every block there. When I went back there this summer the one LAN center I went to there was still running 1.5 because they didn't want to pay for a Valve cybercafe license. I suspect alot of them are like this and im sure this also holds them back alot. Good read you hit the nail on the head about the required service being an enormous crutch.

It's mainly because I have no network with Singapore teams/news group there... So instead I just chatted with a few gamers in Singapore to get a general idea of how things are like there for e-sports.

I apologize, but i promise next installment would be very detailed!

Good Read, interesting about the armed service laws, not a totaly bad idea. The Titans used to be a great team, and one of my favorites i hope to see a comeback by them.
My geography teacher used to live there and teach at Singapore University he said he loved it, but its hot as hell.

Nothing much besides Orchard Rd for Shopping and Sentosa Island for some beach affairs. However, you might want to go around Singapore's many hawker centers or 'kopitiams' and try the cheap but very good foods, but u might need to get hold of someone local who knows which food stalls are great to show you around. When I was studying in America, I missed the local food so much it became a major factor for me returning to Singapore earlier than planned.

Oh ya, there are some hot night scenes like Zouk, St James Power Station etc if you are in the mood for some grooves n booze. A few years later you might want to come here to gamble since the government has just recently lifted the ban on gambling and there are plans in place for building two nice and big casinos, the smaller of the two being part of an integrated resort of sorts at Sentosa Island.

one thing is about the compulsory army while other real obstruction is because the government is always putting heavy stress on education =X no time to game.

My girlfriend is an ex-pat in Singapore with her dad being a big time Engineer over there based to work South East Asia... She's currently studying at Tanglin Trust School...

Her family showed me a good time and welcomed me instantly... They got offered a Permanent Residence from Singapore a while back but I think they declined due to that Army Service which would fall onto her 14 year old brother in a few years but they plan to leave soon (3-6 years or so) like most ex-pat families... I think she has to do some Army Nurse training as well when she's 18 or something... I try to learn all I can so I don't get executed over there :|

The LAN over there is fun and so is net even, I played better over there due to no problem with rego and also I didn't know who was good and who wasn't so I just played to my fullest, good servers :)

Also as some said, Sim Lim is a good place to go and my girlfriend's brother races R/C cars at Turf City which has good food (hawkers)

They also have a Ministry of Sound, which is VERY fun... If you're ever over there check it out... Cheeky's and the Eski Bar is also good, my girlfriend got a Mega Margorita for her birthday so I had to help her finish it :)

I went for her Birthday and School Ball which was held at the Raffles (which is like a 5-7 Star Hotel or something with big stars staying there) and that was absolutely awesome, except for being in a suit for the photos out in the tropical weather :P everyone was a bit hot and bothered so we made our way in for our 5 course meal :P

Goto the Sushi Bars too, forget the names but they are big over there, very oriental and cool indeed :) Taxi's are very cheap too :O

P.S: The ball photo of Her, Me and Her Best Friend are on my profile page :)

i lived over there between '88 and '93, my dad Pat was an ex-pat. :D
i'll certainly go back there one day.
one also has to take into effect that it's rather small country.
they have Titans and i'm not sure but i think there are a lot of good DoTa (wc3 custom map) players / teams too.

Also people, it's REALLY not as strict as everything thinks it is, it did back in the day but not anymore, just don't do anything TOO illegal when you're there :)

Yeah, theres a great misconception of Singapore being extremely strict, which is incorrect. They are perticularly headstrong only against drugs... the myths about chewing gum (although not allowed) are not enforced at all, public alcoholism isnt taken that offensivly either :). It is a very safe country.
