All Games: CZM wins Q3, fnatic wins CS at CPL Winter 2006

By: JP McDaniel - Published December 20, 2006 at 3:46 PM EST - Writer Archive
Fnatic takes the Counterstrike Final and Paul "CZM" Nelson wins the Quake 3 Final at the CPL Winter 2006 Event.
Dallas, TX (GotFrag) - The Cyberathlete Professional League Winter 2006 Event has come to a close, seeing many legendary matches such as Team 3D vs compLexity going into triple overtime and the always amazing Paul "czm" Nelson vs Anton "mouz.Cooller" Singov. Below are the results for each of the two games.

CPL 2006 Final Standings - Quake 3

1. United States Paul "czm" Nelson - $15,000
2. China Fan "Hacker.RazerJ" Zhibo - $9,500
3. Russia Anton "mouz.Cooller" Singov - $6,000
4. Sweden Alexander "mouz.Z4muZ" Ihrfohrs - $3,500
5. United States Vijal "viju" Patel - $2,500
6. Australia Andrew "Python" ChaCha - $2,000
7. United States Brian "ons\destrukt" Flander - $1,500
8. United States Mark "ons\cl0ck" McGrail - $1,000
9-12. China Meng "RocketBoy" Yang, Sean "ons\daler" Price, Shane "scar" Hendrixson, Turkey Iskender "Raistlin" Ildiz - $750
13-16. United States Rafik "EG.LoSt-CaUzE" Bryant, United States Michael "bLT" Smith, United States Dan "carnage" Sturdivant, United States Chance "ons\chance" Lacina - $500

czm wins!
Legendary clan Kapitol starter Paul "czm" Nelson won the Quake 3 event after three maps in the final over Fan "Jibo" Zhibo. Like the same match-up in the upper bracket finals, Zhibo was only able to take his home map of ztn3tourney1 over Nelson, while Nelson won convincingly on hub3aeroq3 and dm6. Nelson's closest match of the event came against Anton "Cooller" Singov, the man who defeated Nelson at the last major Quake 3 international event of ESWC 2005. Nelson was down 13-2 in the third map of the series and was able to make one of the best comebacks in Quake 3 tournament history to win the map and head into the final. Sweden's Alexander "Z4muZ" Ihrfohrs placed a very respectable fourth, but was disappointed with his passiveness in his loss to Singov. Renowned Q3CTF'er Vijal "viju" Patel, GotFrag.com's dark horse pick of the event, placed second best of all Americans who attended the event, defeating Andrew "Python" ChaCha and Brian "destrukt" Flander along the way.

CPL 2006 Final Standings - Counterstrike

1. Sweden Fnatic - $30,000 USD
2. Norway Meet Your Makers - $21,000 USD
3. Poland Pentagram - $14,000 USD
4. France Against All Authority - $9,000 USD
5. China Hacker.Gaming - $6,000 USD
6. South Korea Project_kr - $5,000 USD
7. Finland 69°N-28°E - $3,000 USD
8. United States Jax Money Crew - $2,000 USD
9-16. 3D, 4Kings, Check Six, rSports, SK.swe, MiBR, Pandemic, x3o - $1,250 USD

fnatic wins!
Fnatic played extremely well the entire tournament, and capped things off with a dominating performance over mYm in the Grand Final to win the CPL Championship 2006. Pentagram improved upon their disappointing WSVG Finals performance with a 3rd place finish here, while aAa surprised quite a few people by defeating Hacker and placing 4th.

Hacker made some noise with their victory over 3D, while Project also brought an end to the tournament for SK in the first round. These two Asian powerhouses round out the 5th and 6th place finishes respectively. Jax Money Crew was looking to further improve upon their 3rd place finish at the CPL a year ago, but fell short despite dominating MiBR in the first round of bracket play. The team settled for 8th place. Other notable teams that made it past group play to finish in the money were 3D, SK, Pandemic, and MiBR.

Nicely done fnatic, I was expecting a lot more resistance from MYM, since I know Norway has a lot of talent, but then again, MYM had a fairly easy way to the finals, comparing to fnatic's coL, 3D, pentagram and many more matches.

Once again, nice job. Also extra credits to Gotfrag's Livestream, albeit it failed a few times, it was definitely the best stream I've ever witnessed, and not even compareable to the horrid WCG livestream.

aAa was the surprise of the tournament without a doubt, the French teams always put up a fight but that was truly impressive - honorable mention to MiBR looking pretty bad. congrats to fnatic for finally securing that elusive major win; they'd have quite a run this year.

As i predicted even before the start of CPL, fnatic would take it. And they did. Great job guys! After all these steady finishes in TOP4 almost at every major tournament fnatic attended, this CPL win was well deserved! Despite much harder path to the Finals, than the one of MYM, you guys still did it! =)

Special "Thank you!" guys to Got?Frag and its staff. You guys did truly impressive job on the coverage of the event; both Counter Strike and Quake 3. LIVE streaming was just amazing to watch! Loved it! Keep up the great job!

A there is a little mistake in the last paragraph: "These two asian powerhouses round out the 4th and 5th place finishes respectively". It's suppose to be 5th and 6th place finished for Hacker.gm and Project_kr. Not 4th and 5th.

Congrats to fnatic for finally pulling out that elusive vicotry at a tournament, and it doesn't get any bigger than winning CPL. Honorable mention to mYm for having a great run, not the best finals but an amazing tournament overall.
