All Games: Official World Ranking update as CPL, ESWC loom

By: Trevor Schmidt - Published July 03, 2005 at 12:15 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Two events a World apart will help determine many opinions about who is the best for perhaps the rest of the season. CPL will again begin in Dallas, TX while ESWC hosts gamers in Paris, France. Even more important than both events could be the release of the next GotFrag's Official World Rankings. With many sponsors eyeing the Rankings, teams continue to watch them to help determine who belongs where. Results at the events should change things up but a good indication heading in will be seen below.

With an update needed before ESWC/CPL, the few major events left have had an impact on the World Rankings. The most obvious is WEG, ACON5 and CPL Brazil. WEG’s winner grabs the top spot after an impressive victory over Catch-Gamer who defeated 2nd ranked 4K in the Semifinals. Another team benefiting was Abitstrike who put together another solid event as they grabbed 4th place, good for 9th in the rankings. A weak competition at CPL Brazil and a failure to win their ESWC qualifier killed MiBR who drops to 10th in the World.

Complexity’s dominance of the Rankings is deserved with their current run as they swept GGL and CAL-I. They continue to beat 3D head to head in every meeting including the two game sweep at ESWC USA. All could be forgotten if they don’t start proving they can consistently beat International teams. Down in the rankings sees a little shake up as the moves by WEW, u5 and Check-Six all sort themselves out. Each one needs to prove on LAN that their moves were the best before a clear picture gets sorted out here. At the bottom features playoff teams from GGL and CAL-I who are making noise but will need International LAN events to solidify higher spots from most of the voters.

10Germany OCRANA-19160

The fall of NiP stands out on the rankings as they drop four spots after all of their issues. SK.swe’s new crew gains the support of the voters but without a lot of backing they’ll need to put up a great result at CPL USA if they want even think of keeping it. Virtus.Pro, who barely made ESWC but did win ACON 5, moves up. A pair of non-WEG Season 2 teams, Mouz and EYE, manage to hold off two teams that did attend, Catch Gamer and Pentagram. The EPS Germany winner OCRANA grabs the final 10th spot.

General Ranking Notes:
1. Sorry, but there aren't any rankings for Australian, Asian or South American regions.
2. International teams do not qualify for North American or European rankings. They are ranked in the World Rankings exclusively. International teams are determined by the organization that runs them and their determination of their home of country of operation.
3. Rankings are voted on by top teams from around the World via an email/point process where each representative ranks the team with the team receiving points based on their individual ranking per representative.
