All Games: WSVG announce 2007 tournament games

NEW YORK - April 5, 2007 - The World Series of Video Games (WSVG) announced today the highly-anticipated plans for its 2007 season, including venues around the globe, a new circuit structure, $750,000 in cash prizes, and several titles never before offered in the world's top gaming competitions.
Matt Ringel, President of the WSVG, tonight announced the games set to feature in the World Series of Video Games 2007 in his latest video on thewsvg.com. This was the fourth such video released and the WSVG had clearly been saving their biggest surprise for last. The 2007 series will feature four titles as well as a fifth that will vary depending on the event. The four main titles, two for PC and two for console, are as follows:

▪  World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (PC)
▪  Quake 4 (PC)
▪  Fight Night Round 3 (Console)
▪  Guitar Hero 2 (Console)

The addition of World of Warcraft will come as a surprise to many but Ringel stated that the WSVG had been working with Blizzard Entertainment, the developers, for some time and describes World of Warcraft as "the world's biggest game bar none". The game will be played in a 3v3 PVP Arena format and replaces Counter Strike 1.6 as the main team-based PC game.

Quake 4 also earns a spot at the WSVG for the second year running, with Ringel proclaiming it features "the most well known names in esports". The format again will be 1v1 dm and Toxic will be given a chance to defend his title on home soil this year, with the grand finals held at Dreamhack in Sweden.

On the console side of things, EA's Fight Night Round 3 and Guitar Hero 2 were the games of choice. Ringel made it clear that the WSVG wanted to go "very, very mainstream" and their choice of games reflect this. Although Halo2, a more accepted competitive title, is set to feature at the Dallas major, the WSVG is aiming to bring in a larger crowd with two games many would consider more easily accessible. Indeed the American rock band Saliva announced the addition of Guitar Hero 2 as they made a guest appearance on the video. Ringel added that "players will be judged on their in-game score as well as their showmanship" in this particular game in a move to spice up the competition. It was also made clear that additional console titles will be announced in the coming months and a number of other games will be available to play at their events in what Ringel described as the "festival area".

Going back to Counter Strike 1.6, Ringel announced that the WSVG will continue to support the game to some extent but made it clear that "the world has changed with respect to this title", stating the number of players moving on to Counter Strike: Source and,  pointedly, their inability to "put the game on television". He made it clear that these factors meant that it "does not make sense for [the WSVG] to spend half a million dollars to support it" but maintained they loved the game and that it would feature at their Asian and European majors as well as at least one American event.

Call of Duty 2 is also set to make an appearance at the WSVG and will feature at the majors in Dallas and Orlando later this year. On more than one occasion Ringel has expressed his admiration of the Call of Duty 2 community's efforts to have their game featured at events such as the WSVG and this news can be considered a just reward for their hard work. Also set to be included as secondary games are Warcraft 3 at the China major, Halo 2 in Dallas and Counter Strike 1.6 in China, Louisville and Europe.
